Hello everyone. Today, I will lecture on the Atonement.

Continuing on from the previous lecture, I will continue today on the incident that happened
on the cross. We will first look in Acts chapter 2 verse 23. It’s Acts chapter 2 verse 23, “Him,
being delivered by the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God, ye have taken, and
by wicked hands have crucified and slain.” In Acts, the incident on the cross is tremendous,
wonderful, and important. The incident on the cross was, “Him, being delivered by the
determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God.” This was the precise will of God. He was
delivered by the foreknowledge of God. Thus, this wasn’t a coincidental incident. This is truly
important because this is the determinate counsel of God and it was accomplished
according to His foreknowledge. So, as we look through the Bible one by one on the
wonderful incident on the cross, we are looking at it one by one how it was precisely
accomplished according to prophecy and according to what the Lord said.

Why don’t we now look at 1Peter chapter 1? Chapter 1 speaks on this clearly as well. It’s
chapter 1 verse 20, 1Peter chapter 1 verse 20, “Who verily was foreordained before the
foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you.”Before the foundation
of the world, in other words, since eternity, the death of Jesus on the cross was
foreordained. The death of Jesus on the cross didn’t happen in a day at a certain time and it
didn’t happen because of some mistake. The death of Jesus on the cross was foreordained
before the foundation of the world. It was already planned before the foundation of the
world, it was already made known, and it was the will that was planned.

However, when we look in Matthew chapter 26, the Jews said to not crucify Jesus on the
feast day. Why? It’s because there might be an uproar among the people. During the feast
day, such as the Passover or the days of unleavened bread, the Jews did not execute anyone
according to their customs. During the feast day when countless numbers of people are
gathering, traveling, and moving, the Jews didn’t execute anyone or do something big. But
where in the Bible does it back up these parts? It’s in Acts. If you look in Acts, it says how the
death on the cross was accomplished precisely according to the Bible and according to the
will of God. It’s Acts chapter 12 verse 3, “And because he saw it pleased the Jews, he
proceeded further to take Peter also. (Then were the days of unleavened bread.)”Verse 4,
“And when he had apprehended him, he put him in prison, and delivered him to four
quaternions of soldiers to keep him; intending after Easter to bring him forth to the
people.”So, they tried to bring him before the people after the Passover and kill him. It’s
because Herod the king saw how pleased the Jews were when James the brother of John
was killed with the sword. So, he took Peter to kill him, but it was the days of unleavened
bread. That is why they tried to kill him before the people after the Passover. But if you look
through Matthew chapter 26, it says, “Not on the feast day.” On Friday, during the Passover,
during the feast day, no one was executed according to Jewish customs. But the Bible
precisely recorded the death of Jesus. Regardless of their resolution, determination, and will,
Jesus was crucified and died during the Passover according to the Word. He died and
resurrected. We are looking into the wrong concepts concerning the incident on the cross on
the death of Jesus Christ.

The second from among them is that Jesus Christ didn’t die as a martyr. Why is this
important? Some people describe Jesus Christ as a martyr. It’s keeping the spiritual life
concerning Christ and God, and not denying it.Just like Stephen, when he died from being
stoned, he saw the Lord in glory and he had hope. Although he suffered, he dies with joy.
There are people that describe the death of Jesus on the cross as “the death of a martyr”.
So, it’s a martyr dying in happiness in the midst of God’s happiness. But Jesus didn’t die a
martyr’s death. It means he didn’t die as a martyr. Why wasn’t it? Every time we think of the
death of Jesus, every time Jesus thought of his death on the cross, did he bear it with
happiness or was he tormented? Jesus was tormented and worried. So, the death of Jesus
wasn’t a death of a martyr.Should we first look in Matthew? It’s Matthew chapter 26. Why
don’t we open to Matthew chapter 26 and read it? Verse 39, “And he went a little farther,
and fell on his face, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from
me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt.”“If it be possible, if you are able, let this cup
pass from me.” As Jesus bore the cross, did he bear the cross with joy while giving thanks?
Or did he say to remove this cup from him? When Jesus bore the cross, he was worried, in
anguish, and in agony. If you also look in John chapter 12, that’s what it says. Why don’t we
look for that?

The reason we are looking for John chapter 12 is because this tell us that the death of Jesus
on the cross wasn’t a death of a martyr because it’s a greater death than that. It’s John
chapter 12 verse 27. “Now is my soul troubled; and what shall I say? Father, save me from
this hour: but for this cause came I unto this hour.”He was saying to save him from this hour
from the pain of the cross. But Jesus clearly said that he came for that hour. Thus, when
Jesus bore the cross, his death was a great death. It was a great death, a one-of-a-kind death
where there can’t be two of them. This is telling us that it wasn’t a death of a martyr.

If we look at another thing that happened on the cross, there are many people that
understand the atonement of Jesus on the cross in a wrong way. There are many wrong
theories that are being inundated. As we look at these things one by one, we are
establishing in our hearts through the Word what the precise death of the cross is. One of
them is knowing the atonement of Jesus Christ on the cross in a wrong way and that is the
ransom theory. What is this ransom theory talking about? It’s saying that Christ paid the
ransom to the devil; he paid the price of sin to the devil. We often think carelessly that the
price of sin was paid for. We easily say that the price of sin was paid because the devil
doesn’t let go of us and now he let’s go of us. If you look at the Bible carefully, there are
many people that say the ransom was paid to the devil and why the ransom was paid to free
man who is trapped in sin. But what exactly does the Bible say about this? It’s saying the
devil doesn’t have any right. The devil doesn’t have any power or anything concerning our
sins. The devil has no right or power before God. That is why no price is paid to the devil.
The devil is just a usurper. The Bible is telling us that the devil usurps from man the things
that were given to them by God, and the devil has no right or power. Simply put, the ransom
theory is Jesus freeing us from sin and paying the price of sin, but who did he pay the
ransom to? Was it the devil? It wasn’t. This isn’t too difficult for you, is it? There are many
such theories.

Next is the satisfaction theory. You are going to hear a lot of things today that you don’t
know about. What is the satisfaction theory? The honor of God was tarnished by the sins of
man. The holy God’s honor was damaged due to the sins of man. So, through the forgiveness
of sins, the tarnished and damaged honor of God is recovered, but not through the cross
because what is missing from the cross? If you always look at the cross, righteousness is
missing from the cross.

Next is the moral influence theory. What is this? It’s saying our sins could be forgiven
without Jesus dying on the cross. Jesus didn’t need to die on the cross. Even without the
cross, Jesus could forgive sin. However, the cross is proof of God’s love that He is showing to
us. If we look at it that way, there really isn’t a problem with these things. Even if Jesus
didn’t have the cross, he could wash sin by dying on the cross. He could just die then the
cross is proof of God’s love. The cross is God’s greatest expression of His love. Somehow this
seems right, but there is something missing here. The cross is the place where the justice of
God is manifested. That is why it’s only through the cross and Jesus has to die on the cross.
Why? It can’t be that the just judgment of God and the justice of God be missing from the
cross. So, if Jesus dies on the cross, is our sin washed? Sin is washed with blood. But that is
not biblically precise. So, the cross is God’s proof; it’s His expression of love. Even without
the cross, if Jesus dies, sin is washed. Well, that is wrong, isn’t it? Because the cross is God’s
justice, a just judgment must be made and Christ has to be the advocate. Christ has to be the
advocate, but if sin is taken away without the cross, an error is made that Jesus Christ is not
the advocate. Jesus Christ must receive the just judgment in our place and Christ must be
our advocate. This is the immutable Word of the Bible.

There is the model theory where certain people say that Jesus obeyed and submitted to the
will of God even until death on the cross to show man as a model of obeying and submitting
to God. There are all sorts of theories, right? There is this model theory. This is also not
precise. It means that the death of Jesus on the cross was not a death to be shown as a
model to man.

Next is another theory. There is something called the reign theory. What is the reign theory?
It means that man doesn’t know the gravity of sin. That is why they are bold in committing
sin and then they commit sin without sense. Thus, God had to make man realize the gravity
of sin. To make man realize the gravity of sin, Jesus died on the cross. But we can see here
the part that is the core of the death of the cross which is the justice of God. The justice of
God is manifested. The justice of that just God can’t break down.

I believe there are two things we must always look for in Jesus. One of them is that Jesus
Christ was on the cross. First is that the justice of God was manifested in that death. Second
is that the love of God was manifested. It said, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his
only begotten Son.”The justice of God was clearly manifested on the cross, and the other
thing is that he became the ransom because God loved us. These are the parts spoken of by
the Bible. Saying that Jesus Christ died on the cross for us to realize the gravity of sin is
ignoring the justice of God. If you look at the death of Christ according to the scriptures, it’s
absolute. This is absolute. Why is this absolute? It’s because there is no other way for man to
receive the forgiveness of sins. The forgiveness of sins can only be received through Jesus
Christ. There is no other way, but Jesus Christ.

This death is a wonderful thing. People lead the death of Jesus Christ on the cross as a
mystical thing. It’s the mystical theory. They speak of it as a mystical thing, but this isn’t
something mystical. Why don’t we look at this in detail? The death of Jesus Christ is that
Jesus died through the cross. But what do people say about this? People say the death of
Jesus Christ on the cross was to remove sin from humanity. What that means is that because
Jesus Christ came in the flesh, they said sinful attributes are in the flesh of Jesus. Because of
the sinful attributes, what the cross of Jesus does is removing the sinful attributes and sin
from humanity. That is the death on the cross. This is how people interpret it in a mystical
way. It’s not even mystical; it’s the mystical theory. Jesus Christ removed corruption and
humanity and God were united through the cross. This is the Holy Spirit working to remove
the sin of humanity from Jesus. We heard this many times in our lecture on incarnation. This
is denying the Word on incarnation. That is what the mystical theory is.

Next, because many people spoke on the death of Jesus through similar things, these things
must be correct to the Bible. It has to be clear. The next thing is repentance through a
representative. Do you understand that? Repentance through a representative. This is what
we would say, “Repenting on one’s behalf.” We call this the representative repentance
theory. This says that Jesus received the punishment in our place and he obeyed to repent in
our place. Jesus was punished instead of us and he repented in our place for us to be able to
repent. We are the ones who should repent, but Jesus obeyed to repent in our place. There
are many people that insist on this. Without an accurate basis on the Bible, what do many
people do? There are many people that speak of the incident on the cross with their
thoughts. Because of that, there are many errors and heretics. These are all lies, errors, and
misconceptions made by Satan to prevent us from believing in our hearts precisely through
the Word concerning the death of Jesus Christ on the cross.

Why don’t we take a look into this? The difference between God and man is that Jesus is
perfect, right? He’s perfect. Did Jesus know the things man went through when man sinned?
Why don’t we think about that? Does Jesus know the things man went through when man
sinned? He doesn’t know because he didn’t sin, right? Because Jesus didn’t sin, he doesn’t
know the pain man goes through because of sin. He has no understanding or emotion on
sin. Because Jesus is perfect and complete, he can’t sin. Thus, Jesus doesn’t know the
senses, emotions, and understanding on sin. There is no reason for him to know and there is
no need for him to know, but he knows all the weaknesses and pain experienced through
the human flesh. That means it’s impossible for him to repent. Repentance is when one who
left God returns to God, right? There is a reason for us to be clear on these errors, these
wrong concepts and doctrines. Jesus is perfect. So, does he need to repent? Is it necessary
for him? Jesus doesn’t need to repent. A more correct expression would be that repentance
is impossible for him. It’s impossible for him. He doesn’t need repentance. Why? The Lord
can’t feel the understanding and emotions of sin, and the pain that comes from sin. What
need does Jesus have for repentance? Repentance is impossible for him. Why? It’s because
Jesus doesn’t need to repent.

Man is different from God, right? They are different from Jesus, right? It’s because man left
God. These are things that all of you must know. Jesus Christ has no sin and he’s perfect.
Jesus is the perfect man, but man continually reflects on the things possessed by man and
thinks upon that. Because Jesus is perfect, he is sinless. He has no sin. Not only did Jesus
have no sin, but he couldn’t feel the emotion that comes from sin, the understanding that
comes from sin, or the many things that come from sin. Why? It’s because he can’t sin.
Because he can’t sin, he is the perfect God and Christ who doesn’t need to repent. But there
are many people that compare Jesus to man and think of him the same.

The parts we just went through today were on the wrong theories, right? One of them is
that the death of Jesus on the cross wasn’t an accident or tragedy. Saying that it was a tragic
accident or Jesus failed are all wrong theories and concepts. Regarding the ransom theory,
the ransom wasn’t paid to the devil. There is no reason to pay any sort of ransom to the
devil. The satisfaction theory says that the honor of God was tarnished and damaged
because of the sin of man. So, the tarnished honor of God was recovered through the
forgiveness of sins. This is also not biblical. The moral influence theory says sin can be
forgiven without the cross and the cross is proof and expression of God’s love.It seems
similar, but the justice of God is missing. Thus, even this moral influence theory doesn’t
speak clearly on the death of Jesus on the cross. There is also the model theory. The model
theory says that Jesus was an exemplary model who obeyed God until death to show that
his example of obeying God. This is also unbiblical. There is the reign theory. What is it? It’s
moral reign. To morally realize the gravity of sin, Jesus Christ died on the cross. This ignores
the absolute death of Jesus Christ on the cross and the justice of God. The only way for man
to receive the forgiveness of sins is Jesus Christ and his death. There is also the mystical
theory. Jesus Christ didn’t remove sin from humanity through the cross. It means he didn’t
remove sin from humanity through the death on the cross because when Jesus was born, he
was born into this world after the Holy Spirit already removed all sin from humanity. That is
why he is sinless and he can’t commit sin. That is the biblical aspects. The next thing, if you
look here, is the representative repentance theory, which is the concept on representative
repentance. This is also not biblical. Why is it unbiblical? Jesus received the punishment in
our place, right? He repented in our place and he obeyed. It’s not that he received the
punishment in our place and repented in our place and obeyed. Why? It’s because he is the
perfect God. God put on the flesh and came. He’s perfect. That is why he doesn’t know the
things man go through when man sins. Why? He’s God who doesn’t need repentance and
repentance is impossible for him. The Bible covers those parts in detail for us.

Now, there are things we have to cover in the next lecture. The death of Jesus on the cross
was a redemptive atonement. It was substitution, redeeming in our place. We will cover the
concept of redemptive atonement in the next lecture. As we covered the parts on
atonement one by one, by knowing the Bible precisely, we know how precise the death of
Jesus for us is. According to the sure will of God, it was planned before the foundation of the
world since eternity. Jesus clearly knew of his death on the cross. Only through this death,
the death on the cross, can the justice of God be manifested and justice be revealed. Justice
was manifested to us and the death of the cross is a redemptive atonement. It holds a
concept on atonement. Concerning these theories that we have covered, there are many
parts to these theories where we can be easily confused.

Were you able to understand these a little? Why don’t we put these in order? As we put
them in order, we will discover that we know many things. There will be things that came
into us one by one without us realizing it. For example, it’s correct to say proof of love or
expression of love, but if the justice of God is missing from there, the mediation of Jesus
Christ is missing. Because Jesus Christ the mediator is missing, it’s not accurate. That is why,
through this Bible, one by one, it clearly said ransom, right? It’s ransom. So, the cross of
Jesus is a ransom. Thus, through the judgment of the just God, the holiness of God is
manifested, we are redeemed, and the love of God and salvation are all accomplished. The
cross does that. As that cross is clearly engraved in our hearts, I hope our souls can be firmly
established in the Word of God.

I will end the lecture. Goodbye.
