Hello everyone. Today, I will lecture on the necessity of atonement.

First, we will look at Hebrews chapter 2 verse 9. I am continuing on the lecture on the
necessity of atonement. I will first read Hebrews chapter 2 verse 9 before I begin the lecture.
It’s Hebrews chapter 2 verse 9, “But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the
angels for the suffering of death, crowned with glory and honour; that he by the grace of
God should taste death for every man.”“Should taste death.” We all taste food. We also taste
happiness and joy. This Word here is talking about tasting. All of you hear a lot about tasting
food. You also hear a lot about tasting happiness and joy, but what about tasting death?
Maybe you are seeing this word, this expression for the first time in the Bible – tasting
death. Do you want to taste death? Experiencing something or tasting something like some
joy, right?Or eating. It’s those things. There is a reason why death must be tasted.

I am continuing the lecture on the necessity of atonement. Why did Jesus have to taste
death? If you look here, “By the grace of God should taste death for every man.”If we look
here, first of all, only the Lord tasted the fear of death; only the Lord. There is no one who
tasted the fear of death. He died and that death was judgment on sin and it was decided by
God. Only Jesus tasted the fear of death here, right? If we look at the many phenomena that
were manifested when the fear of death was tasted, when Jesus died, he sweated blood,
right? He sweated blood as if the sweat was blood. This was tasting death, right? As he
prayed in the Garden of Gethsemane, he sweated blood. Next, he cried out, right? He cried
out. “My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?”Next, his heart burst. Actually, his heart
was pierced. His side was pierced. It was pierced with a spear. That Lord tasted such death.
Why did the Lord taste it? God delivered His only begotten Son, His loving Son to death.
What is the reason for letting him taste death? It’s because that was absolutely necessary. It
was absolutely necessary. If not, God would not have delivered His only begotten Son, His
loving Son to death. Because this was absolutely necessary, God allowed this.

Let’s look in Romans chapter 8, Romans chapter 8 verse 32, “He that spared not his own
Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all
things?”There is one thing among the important things here. The death of Jesus on the cross
is the only method and way that could free us from sin and save us. As we continue on with
this lecture, it says here, “He that spared not his own Son.” How did He not spare him? To be
specific, He didn’t spare His own Son. When Jesus died on the cross, the torment and
suffering he went through, and the shame when he died naked on the cross, within that pain
where he went through everything, the Son wasn’t spared. He wasn’t spared where his
punishment was lessened, his shame was covered, or his suffering and torment were
lessened. He was delivered to all of that. God sent him to go through all the pain. Of course,
the Lord did go, but God allowed it and the Lord didn’t avoid that burden. God didn’t avoid
the suffering and the shameful torment. He didn’t allow him to avoid it and He didn’t spare
him. Why didn’t He spare him? It’s because the only method to save us was for him to die on
the cross and he had to be punished. Because this was the only method and the only way, he
wasn’t spared. God didn’t spare anything for His Son when Christ the Son of God bore our
sins. Do you understand that? When God’s own Son bore our sins, he wasn’t spared. God
didn’t spare him at all. His suffering wasn’t reduced and his pain wasn’t lessened. Nothing
was spared and he was delivered up. The Son wasn’t spared and he was delivered up. Why?
The Son wasn’t spared and he was delivered up because that was the only method to save
us.

There is a meaning behind this. There is a meaning behind not sparing His Son and delivering
him up. That is the wrath of God on sin; the fierce wrath on sin. That was poured on the Son.
Nothing was spared. Not sparing anything might simply be just that, but it means that
nothing was spared at all. All the shame he went through, nothing was spared. The Son
wasn’t spared. We spare food for our son, right? We spare things, and we consider
important things with value and spare them. But when God delivered His Son, He didn’t
spare anything. Not sparing means torment, shame, and everything was poured on him.
Next is the wrath on sin. The wrath of God was poured on him. The fierce wrath was poured
on the Son. Why did He do that? It was described, “Delivered him up for us all.” If you look in
verse 32, “How shall he not with him also freely give us all things?”“Freely give us all things.”
The one who delivered Jesus up for everyone is God. If He that spared not His own Son, but
delivered him up for us all, why would he not freely give us all things? He will give. He will
freely give us all things. If we’re together with the Son, He will give everything. This is the
latter part that He will give us. The first part is that He didn’t spare His Son, but delivered
him up for us all. God didn’t spare for His Son and He delivered him up for everyone; that’s
what this Word is. He was delivered up for everyone. There was no other method than this
method to save everyone. This method is the only method. That is why He didn’t spare His
Son.

This is the central part of today’s lecture. He didn’t spare His Son, but delivered him up. He
didn’t spare him. How amazing is this Word? Let’s take a look in John chapter 3. Chapter 3
verse 16 is a verse that many people know very well. It’s chapter 3 verse 16, “For God so
loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should
not perish, but have everlasting life.”“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only
begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”
It’s described here as giving the only begotten Son. The only begotten Son was given. He was
given like the description of being delivered up. How was he given? The only begotten Son
was delivered up through torment, shame, and the pain of death. It said, “For God so loved
the world, that he gave his only begotten Son.”“Gave” means he was delivered to pain,
judgment, shame, and torment. It holds such a meaning. He was given. Between God and
the Lord, there never was a parting or a breaking in their eternal fellowship. But he was
delivered up until death that broke it.

In the previous lecture, it said, “My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?”The death of
Jesus wasn’t a martyr’s death, but it was a death of being forsaken by God. Why did he have
to be forsaken? God and the Lord were never apart. Jesus who was the only begotten and
came from the bosom of the eternal God had his fellowship with God the Father broken and
their relationship parted. He was delivered up to the point where that had to break. That is
about the atonement. Because the substitution for our sins is redemptive and punishable,
that’s how it is. In short, that cross was a substitution on atonement. The cross is punishable.
The cross is not simply some beautiful thing like a necklace or earring of a cross that’s
glamorized. To be precise, the cross is God delivering up His Son. The Son was in the eternal
fellowship and eternal bosom. The fellowship was never broken, but the Son was delivered
up. In other words, that fellowship was broken; the relationship with God was broken. Why
was he forsaken? Why? He had to be judged to punish our sins and to bear our sins in our
place and redeem them. For that atonement to be accomplished, punishment concerning
the atonement must come and substitution must be done in its place. That is why the
judgment of death must come to the cross because the Son was delivered up as the
Redeemer.

As we look into these things a little more, first of all, the death of Jesus on the cross is the
wrath of God. It’s wrath and not love; it’s the wrath of God. When we accept that with faith,
it becomes love. But the death on the cross, to be specific, is the wrath of God. Are you clear
on this? This is wrath. In other words, the wrath of God certainly comes regarding sin and
punishment must be received. Why? It’s because God is just. The wrath of God must come
upon sin. Second, the punishment of God must come; punishment must be made. That is
why the cross is punishable. We are continuing on with such words; it’s punishable. I am
talking how it’s punishable and substitution is necessary. That is why there is the propitiation
in the cross and a ransom to die in our place is necessary.

Why don’t we take a look in Matthew chapter 5? It’s Matthew chapter 5, Matthew chapter 5
verse 18, “For verily I say unto you,” it’s verse 18, “Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one
tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.”“Till heaven and earth pass, one
jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law.”“One jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass
from the law.”The Law of God is undeniably immutable. It’s immutable. “Till heaven and
earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law.” This is undeniable and
immutable that it will surely come to pass. Matthew chapter 24 also talks about this part.
Why don’t we take a look? It’s Matthew chapter 24 verse 35, “Heaven and earth shall pass
away, but my words shall not pass away.”Although heaven and earth pass away, the Law and
the Word of God will not pass away. The Word of God will not change. Within the immutable
Word of God, sin must be punished and it must be judged. The wrath of God must come
upon sin. There is no remission of sin without punishment, wrath, or judgment. There is no
remission without the shedding of blood. This can’t change in the immutable Law of God
and the Word of God. That is why the death on the cross is punishable; the death on the
cross is redemptive. We can never be freed from sin without this and our sins can never be
exempted or washed. Because it must be a punishable and redemptive death on the cross,
it’s not a death of a martyr moved by love or due to love. Second, the responsibility of sin
must be punished for the responsibility of sin to be avoided. Without punishment, the
responsibility of sin can’t be avoided. That is the reason for our Lord in bearing the cross.
That is the reason for being punished on the cross. The responsibility of sin must be
punished for it to be possible.

Next, as I talk of the necessity of atonement, we are looking at the atonement from the
ransom’s point of view. We are looking at the cross from the ransom’s point of view. So, we
can’t explain the accomplishment of atonement through the redemptive cross and the
punishable cross by any other thing. God is clearly teaching us through the cross why we
have to believe in Jesus Christ. That is to say, we are looking at the atonement on the
redemptive point of view. Without that, we can’t explain why and how we have to believe in
Christ. Can we know God without believing in Jesus Christ? We can’t know God without
believing in Jesus Christ. Next, faith in Christ saves us from sin. To explain these things, there
is no other way to explain this other than the death of Jesus Christ on the cross. So, when we
speak of the necessity of atonement, God is speaking to us of His eternal salvation through
the death of Jesus Christ on the cross.

Let’s take a look in Mark. It’s Mark chapter 15. We briefly covered this in the previous
lecture. It’s Mark chapter 15 verse 34, “And at the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice,
saying, Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani? which is, being interpreted, My God, my God, why hast
thou forsaken me?”Here in Mark chapter 15 verse 34, God forsook Jesus. When Jesus died
on the cross, he wanted to avoid this. This is a part he wants to avoid. God forsook His Son,
the Christ. He had to be forsaken. Why did he have to be forsaken? If Jesus wasn’t forsaken,
we can’t be saved. He was forsaken, but he wasn’t just forsaken. Why must he be forsaken?
Why must God forsake His Son, Jesus Christ? The only begotten God was together in the
eternal bosom, but why did God the Father forsake Jesus, God the Son? The greatest pain
that Jesus suffered on the cross wasn’t the pain of physical death. That wasn’t just a
punishable pain, but it was a pain of being forsaken. Why was he forsaken? It’s because we
can’t be saved if he wasn’t forsaken. Without being forsaken to bear our sins and be judged
for our sins, without having God and His Son Christ be set apart, we can’t be saved and we
can’t be redeemed. That is why God had to forsake him. So, being forsaken was the greatest
pain for Jesus. Within that eternity, the one and only request Jesus made was this. I talked
about this in the previous lecture. “If it be possible, let this cup pass from me, remove it
from me.” What does that mean? “Is there any other method than this? Is there any other
method for salvation other than me being apart from God? If there is another method, allow
me to avoid this.”This wasn’t a prayer or request simply because of physical pain. “Is this the
only method to wash the sins of mankind?” Did God say there was another method or not?
He said there wasn’t. If there isn’t, if there is no other method than this way, if there is no
other method to save us and everyone other than being forsaken, Jesus said, “I will obey.”
That Word is truly a great part. That prayer was a great prayer. “I will obey, but according to
your will and not my will.” What does that mean? If there is no other method or way, he will
obey. That is the Lord’s obedience. There is the Lord’s pain of “why hast thou forsaken
me?”We call that crying out. This crying out, why was the Lord forsaken? The place where he
was forsaken was the cross. The judgment on all of our sins was made there, right? All the
wrath, the fierce wrath regarding our sins were poured there. Without that punishment
being made, our sins can’t be washed. Our sins were judged and the wrath of God on our
sins was poured, but the justice of God, the immutable Law that God set, the justice, and
righteousness can’t be accomplished. That is why everything was poured there. The wrath of
God, the fierce wrath of God and the judgment were poured. That is why when the Lord
died, those descriptions are shown precisely.

I, too, had such questions. Jesus bore the cross and he died for our sins. “Oh, thank you. I am
thankful that I was able to bear this cup and wash the sins of man.” He didn’t die like that,
right? If possible, what did he want to do? He wanted to avoid and he didn’t want to bear it.
He said, “If possible, remove this cup from me.” He cried out, he was in pain, and he
sweated blood as if sweat was blood. Going through such pain was not simply a physical
death. God who tried to save man from sin, poured everything there to forgive all
punishment on sin. God poured His entire wrath on His Son, the Christ. The wrath was
poured there and the judgment was poured there. His Son wasn’t spared and all punishment
on sin was given there. By pouring all the punishment of our sins on His only begotten Son, it
was the only method to forgive us of our sins. The only method was the cross and Jesus the
Redeemer. It was poured there.
As you watch this lecture, other than the death on the cross, is there a method where the
just Law of God and His justice can be maintained and declared? Is there a way to make His
Son bear all sins, not forsake His Son, and save us from sin? Is there a method for God to
forgive us of our sins without forsaking His Son? The way for the justice of God to be
declared and make those who believe in Jesus righteous is the death on the cross. Is there
any other way or method for redemption than this? That is why it says in the Bible that there
is no other name or way under heaven given among men for salvation. That is why Jesus
said, “I am the way.”There is no other way; this was the only method. That is why the death
on the cross is punishable. It’s redemptive and punishable. As this is arranged in your hearts,
God can never be known without believing in Christ, we can’t be saved without faith in
Christ, and the only method for us to receive the righteousness of God is to have faith in
Christ who justified us. That is why God poured His entire wrath and all the punishment for
our sins on the cross, and He turned away from His own Son; He forsook him. Why? He had
to forsake him and turn His face away from him to save us. He turned away from him. He
saved us from all sins. To save us, this cross was necessary. The redemption of Christ that
was accomplished on the cross freed us from sin and made us righteous. I hope our hearts
will be blessed by believing this.

I will end here. Goodbye.
