Father of Nigerian Modern Art (1882 - 1963)
FATHER OF NIGERIAN MODERN ART

Aina Onabolu was a pioneering Nigerian modern arts teacher and painter who
was an important figure in the introduction of arts into the curriculum of
secondary schools in Nigeria. He was known for his early modern work in
portraiture.

Aina Onabolu was born in Ijebu-Ode in 1882.

He started painting at the early age of 12.


He later traveled abroad to study art at Académie Julian in Paris, France
and at St. John Woods College, London, UK. On his return to Nigeria, he taught
Art in King's College, Lagos and CMS Grammar School, Lagos. He introduced
arts education to schools in Nigeria.
He died in 1963.
