Gas Turbine Engine - an aircraft turbine engine is the most widely used propulsion system in the aviation

industry. Turbine engines come in several types, each with its own requirements for maintenance and aircraft
engine overhaul.

Types of Gas Turbine Engine

1. TURBOJET ENGINE - a turbojet is the simplest of all aircraft turbine engines, consisting of four sections:
compressor, combustion chamber, turbine section and exhaust.

2. TURBOPROP ENGINE - drive propellers through a reduction gear, which provides optimum propeller
performance at slower rpm speeds. That translates to greater fuel efficiency and performance at
slower airspeeds, which is why turboprops are popular aircraft turbine engines for small, commuter
aircraft, cargo planes and agricultural use.
3. TURBOFAN ENGINE - the turbofan is an aircraft turbine engine that diverts a secondary flow of air
around the combustion chamber, which creates additional thrust.  This is the most modern version of
an aircraft turbine engine and the one often found on high-speed transport and fighter planes.

4. TURBOSHAFT ENGINE - a turboshaft engine is a form of gas turbine that is optimized to produce
shaft power rather than jet thrust.
Components of Gas Turbine Engine
1. AIR INLET - for subsonic aircraft, the inlet is a duct which is required to ensure smooth airflow into the
engine despite air approaching the inlet from directions other than straight ahead.

2. COMPRESSOR SECTION - the compressor is made up of stages. Each stage consists of rotating blades
and stationary stators or vanes. As the air moves through the compressor, its pressure and
temperature increase. The power to drive the compressor comes from the turbine (see below),
as shaft torque and speed.
3. COMBUSTION SECTION – also known as combustion chamber, is where fuel burns continuously after
initially being ignited during the engine start.

4. TURBINE SECTION - is a series of bladed discs that act like a windmill, extracting energy from the hot
gases leaving the combustor. Some of this energy is used to drive the compressor.
5. EXHAUST SECTION – sometimes called nozzle, turbine exhaust gases pass through the propelling
nozzle to produce a high velocity jet. The nozzle is usually convergent with a fixed flow area.

6. ACCESSORY SECTION - accessory section of the gas turbine engine has various functions. The primary
function is to provide space for the mounting of accessories necessary for operation and control of the
engine. Generally, it also includes accessories concerned with the aircraft, such as electric generators
and hydraulic pumps. Secondary functions include acting as an oil reservoir and/or oil sump and
housing the accessory drive gears and reduction gears.
