1. CCNS4 CERTIFICATION

The CCNS4 is a "carry on system". It is not an integral part of the aircraft and thus has not to
be certified.

It is the responsibility of the CCNS4 customer/operator and pilot to find out if a certification
for the CCNS4 system (at the CAA, FAA, etc.) is required in their country. If so, this has to
be done by the customer.

It is the pilot’s decision, whether to use the guidance information computed and displayed by
the CCNS4 system for navigation or not, as done with other non-certified flight navigation
aids.

Please Note, that the CCNS4 has to be included in your weight and balance computations
(refer to the Supplemental, paragraph TECHNICAL DATA) and that your payload will
decrease accordingly. If you decide to fix the CCNS4 system permanently to the aircraft, it
will be necessary to obtain a new weight and balance sheet. Do not exceed the maximum
takeoff weight of your aircraft.

2. INFORMATION
This manual refers to the TFT-CDU. Users who come from the formerly used Cathode Ray
Tube (CRT), will find out that, in general, no fundamental changes have taken place
compared to the CRT CDU.

In the above figure the user elements and the display layout can be seen.

1. DIM ON/Off System power ON/OFF knob and control of the brightness
of the screen. To shut the system down switch of the DIM
knob and push the SEL/ENT knob until the system shuts
down.
2. LED Power on indicator.
3. MODE Selects different MODE
4. PAGE Selects different PAGE
5. SEL/ENT Turn the knob to specify a field that should be edited, push
the knob to start editing and turn the knob to change
values, finally push the knob to confirm inputs.
6. ZOOM IN/ OUT Changes the scale of the navigation display.

! Note: Push the knob during a flight in the SHORT INFO MODE for EXPO STOP.

2.1. INFO MODE

The following pages are available in the info mode:

● SHORT INFO

● SENSOR-INFO #1 This page is only accessible when a camera has been


connected.

● SENSOR-INFO #2 This page is only accessible when a camera has been


connected.

● NAV INFO

● DCI INFO This page is only accessible with Digital Camera Interface.
Can be enabled by a command on SYS CONFIG page #2.

● GPS INFO This page will be replaced by AEROcontrol Info page 1


and 2 if an AEROcontrol is connected. Can be enabled by
a command on SYS CONFIG page #2.

To select one of these pages, use the PAGE button. Each keying of the button will let you flip
to the next page. Flipping past the last page will let the first one appear again.

2.2. SELECT MODE

The SELECT MODE consists of four pages:

● SELECT PROJECT
● SELECT AREA
● SELECT LINE
● PC-CARD INFO (data card)

To select one of these pages, use the PAGE button. Each keying of the button will let you flip

2.3. SETUP MODE

The following pages are included in the SETUP MODE:

port 1)
● SET MOUNT #1 (only accessible when a sensor has been connected to
port 1)
● SET SENSOR #2 (only accessible when a sensor has been connected to

● SET MOUNT #2 (only accessible when a sensor has been connected to
port 2)
● SYSTEM TEST

Use the PAGE button to select any one of these pages. Each keying of the button will let you

! Note: Special System Configuration Pages SYS CONFIG PAGE #1-3 can be reached by
a command on the SET SYSTEM page. To leave the SYSTEM CONFIG page,
press the MODE button once.

! Note: Access this feature on the SYS CONFIG pages only in the NAV OFF mode
(CCNS4 logo visible).

3. MAKING INPUTS
Several menu pages of the CCNS4 system let you enter information. Each input will affect the
currently displayed page only. Some pages are only for displaying information and do not
provide the possibility to make data input.

The screen of the Display Unit(s) is vertically divided into two parts. The larger part on the
left side shows guidance information (opening with the CCNS4 logo), the smaller part on the
right side are system management tasks (pages).

The SEL/ENT knob is used in the SELECT MODE to move the desired project, area or line
into the select frame. Once the desired item has been placed correctly, it can be activated by
pressing the SEL/ENT button.

Other pages, e.g. SETUP PARAMETERS, require alphanumerical inputs. These pages
feature several items and it is necessary to select one specific item, before any changes will be
possible.

This can only be done by using the SEL/ENT knob and the SEL/ENT button.

During a flight, the SEL/ENT Button has yet another function. Pressing SEL/ENT in the
SHORT INFO MODE will pause the camera. EXPSTOP will appear in the upper right corner
of the display and no more photos will be taken until SEL/ENT is hit again.

A thin line will mark a cursor that can be moved by turning the SEL/ENT knob up and down,
on the pages that feature the possibility for inputs.

When the cursor has been placed under the desired item, the SEL/ENT button has to be
pressed. The thin cursor line will turn to a thick one.

The possibility of moving the cursor is now disengaged and turning the SEL/ENT knob will
change the value or setting of the chosen item.
Any new status or value will have to be confirmed by pressing the SEL/ENT button after
resetting an item.

The cursor will then change back to a thin select line and other items can be selected with the
SEL/ENT knob.

This is the general function of the SEL/ENT combination (refer to the description on the
specific pages for more detail or deviations from this rule).

The initial mode is the SELECT mode, the first page is the SELECT PROJECT. It is possible
to change MODES and/or PAGES at any time e.g. to enter the SETUP mode in order to
make necessary inputs before flight.

4. SELECT MODE

To access guidance information, it will be necessary to select the first flight line that has to be
flown. The necessary projects, areas and flight lines must have been defined during mission
planning (refer to IGI's WinMP manual).
The CCNS4 airborne computer is able to handle per CCNS4 Mission Card (PCMCIA
Standard, Type I/II) as many as:

● 100 projects.
● 25 areas/project.
● 100 (999 as a WinMP option) flight lines/area.
● up to 998 photo points (waypoints)/flight line.

4.1. SELECT PROJECT

The SELECT mode can be activated by pressing the MODE


button. Depending on the current page position, it might be
necessary to press the MODE button several times, to reach the
SELECT mode.

The PAGE button has to be used to activate the SELECT


PROJECT page.

The desired project has now to be placed in the select frame by


turning the SEL/ENT knob.

The middle frame shows how many exposure data sets are free
on the CCNS4 Mission Card.

The lower frame is an information witch Project, Area and Line


are actually selected.

The SELECT AREA page will appear after the selected project
has been confirmed by pressing the SEL/ENT button.

4.2. SELECT AREA

The SELECT AREA page will be displayed automatically. If


not, press the PAGE button. A list of areas (maximum of 25),
planned in the currently selected project, will appear.

Turn the SEL/ENT knob until the desired area is inside the
select frame.

The SELECT LINE page will appear after the area has been
confirmed by pressing the SEL/ENT button.

4.3. SELECT LINE

The list of existing flight lines (maximum of 999) of the


currently selected area will be displayed.

Each line will be offered with a 'positive' or 'negative' sign,


meaning that the lines can be flown starting from the planned
start point (+) or from the planned end point (-) of each line.

Now the middle Frame shows information about the Marker


Point of the line shown in the select frame. True bearing (BRG),
distance (DIS) and time to marker point (TTM) are displayed.

Turn the SEL/ENT knob until the desired flight line with the
relevant sign is placed in the select frame and press SEL/ENT
to confirm the selection.

4.4. FLIGHT LINE MARKS

--- No photos have been taken on a flight line.

ALL All photos have been taken on flight line number 2.

REM Remaining photos are to be taken on flight line


number 1.

If a flight line number is selected with the SEL/ENT knob and


confirmed with the SEL/ENT button, two possible combinations
will be accessible by turning the SEL/ENT knob:

REM Only the remaining photos (plus the additional


photos selected on the SET CAMERA page under
ADD EXP) on the chosen flight line will be taken.

--- All photos will be taken on the chosen flight line.

The CCNS4 airborne computer will read all needed information from the Mission Card into
its memory and will compute and display guidance information graphically on the left 2/3rds
of the screen.

4.5. PC CARD INFO

CCNS4 Airborne Computer systems which are equipped with


the Dual PC-card Drives have two PC-cards (PCMCIA
standard).

CCNS4 PROGRAM CARD

The CCNS4 Program card contains the airborne software. It's


removal is only required for Software Updates. The CCNS4
program card is secured by a special cover to protect it from
unintentional removal.

CCNS4 MISSION CARD

The Mission Card contains the planned projects with areas, lines
and waypoints as they come from the WinMP mission planning
software.
It also contains the data that were collected during the flight.
After the flight the Mission Card should be removed to save the
collected data. All log files will be stored in the subdirectory
'Mission.log'.
For information on the files created stored on the Mission Card,
please refer to ch. 10, LOG FILES.

! Note: The function FORMAT A MISSION CARD is not


supported at the moment.
Please use use the Microsoft Windows DOS
command line to format the Mission CARD. The
command is:

'FORMAT <Volume> /FS:FAT /A:2048'.

Change <Volume> to the drive letter of the card


reader (e.g. E: or other)

! Note: Only ATA FLASH PC-Cards can be used as


MISSION CARD.
For PC-Cards delivered from other ventors then IGI
no guarantee of usability and reliablity can be given.

5. SETUP MODE
The SETUP MODE allows the pilot to calculate specific items that are useful for aerial survey
flight operations, e.g. for turn information when switching from one line to the next.

The SETUP MODE additionally features fundamental settings necessary for the setup of
parameters, testing of the CCNS4 including the associated camera system(s) on the ground
and the System Configuration.

5.1. SET CALC

The first page of the SETUP MODE is the calculation page, where several parameters can be
computed.

This page is split into two fields. The first one is the input area. Here you have to enter the
values that are needed to calculate those in the second field.

PALT, QNH and OAT have to be entered in order to be able to calculate true altitude. True
altitude will be displayed in the lower part of the window at the position TALT.

IAS, HDG, PALT, QNH and OAT are needed for calculating Bank Angle, XTD, TAS, WD
and WS. Note, that for calculating XTD, the bank angle is required or vice versa, depending
on what the calculation mode was set to.

IAS Indicated air speed in knots.


This value must be entered manually, unless an air
data sensor is installed in the aircraft and interfaced
to the CCNS4.

HDG Magnetic heading in degrees.


This value is normally delivered by an electric (flux
gate) compass. This value must be set manually, no
electric compass is connected to the CCNS4 system.

CALC Selects the desired calculation mode (being either


BANK ANGLE or Cross Track Deviation) for the
optimum interception of the next flight line.

BANK In order to calculate the required Bank Angle for the


optimum interception of a line with current XTD
(Cross Track Deviation). IAS and HDG have to be
entered.

XTD Calculates the required cross track deviation for a


given BANK ANGLE.

PALT Pressure altitude in feet. If a pressure sensor is


incorporated in the system, the current pressure will
be used. Otherwise the pressure altitude will have to
be set manually.

QNH Manual input of the current pressure setting. Units in


Hectopascal (h Pa) or inches of mercury (in Hg) as
entered on the SYS CONFIG #1 page (ch. 5.8.1).

OAT Manual input of the current outside air temperature.


Units in degrees Celsius (°C) or degrees Fahrenheit
(°F) as entered on the SYS CONFIG #1 page (ch.
5.8.1).
This value is set to 15°C/59°F at CCNS4 power up
and will be updated automatically using the ICAO
formula for the standard atmosphere and the present
flying altitude. Actual temperature must be updated
manually or by a connected air data system. The
values in the lower part of the window will be
calculated from the aforementioned:

TALT True altitude in feet.

TAS True air speed in knots.

WS Wind speed in knots.

WD Wind direction in degrees.

5.1.1 CALCULATION OF TRUE ALTITUDE (TALT)


PALT, QNH and OAT have to be entered, in order to be able to calculate true altitude. True
altitude will be displayed in the lower part of the window at the position TALT, if one of the
above data has been entered.

5.1.2 CALCULATION OF TRUE AIR SPEED, WIND SPEED, WIND


DIRECTION
IAS, HDG, QNH, OAT and PALT are required for this calculation.
By confirming the IAS or input of a new value, TAS, WS and WD are calculated.

5.1.3 CALCULATION OF A BANK ANGLE OR A CROSS TRACK


DEVIATION FOR A 180 DEGREES TURN

To support the pilot in flying a 180° turn, CCNS4 can calculate


either the required XTD for a given bank angle or, vice versa,
the required bank angle for a given XTD to get at an optimal
turn.

Most common is to calculate the XTD by a given bank angle


(e.g. GPS satellite constellation, max. bank angle of the aircraft,
Autopilot…).

By confirming the IAS or input of a new value, the calculation


of XTD will be started.

! Note: It will become necessary to manoeuvre the aircraft to a position that will give the
correct XTD, before initiating the turn.

! Note: If the spacing between the actual flown flight track and the desired flight line is
not to close it is also possible to calculate the needed bank angle. Therefor CALC
must be set to BANK. By confirming the IAS, the actual XTD will be used to
calculate the needed bank angle.

5.2. SET SYSTEM

The SET SYSTEM page provides the following functions:

The first line indicates if an AEROcontrol system (AECTRL) or an external GPS receiver
(Z_XTR / Z-FLY) has been interfaced to the CCNS4 or not, as specified on SYS CONFIG
#3 Page (ch. 5.4.3).
! Note: N/A (not available) is the indication that the CCNS4 is not connected to an
AEROcontrol or any external receiver.

MARKER The marker is an interception point, allowing for


enough time to stabilize the aircraft on the line. It is
depicted by a circle on the NAV screen and will be
located automatically on each flight line in front of
each waypoint/photo. The distance between the
marker point and the first waypoint/photo can be
selected at leisure between "0" and "9.5" nautical

undulation. Undulation describes the difference

MAG Magnetic variation information generally should be

DATE Setup of current date. Format : YY/MM/DD.

single day will be stored in a date specific file. See

TIME GPS system time. Format: HH:MM:SS.

! Note: The time can't be changed by the user. The system


time will be synchronized with the the GPS receiver
time at startup and every 5 minutes during normal
operation.

! Note: The time is based on GPS time. Some GPS receivers


will give UTC time instead of this. The offset
between these clocks must be be set in the SYS
CONFIG page #3. The current offset (2007) is 14
seconds and be valid for some years.

IDENT Four alphanumeric characters can be introduced as


an identifier code under the identifier item. The
code, together with the date information, will be
used to create the file name for the EXPOSURE
FILES and the other log files. Using an identifier
code, it is possible to name the log files for several
aircrafts or crews.

5.3. SET SENSOR #1

Here you can enter the most vital parameters necessary for sensor system control.

Note: Refer to the supplemental paragraph FUNCTIONS OF THE UNIVERSAL


CAMERA INTERFACE for the possible different sensor functions that are
manageable by the CCNS4.

Note: The CCNS4 is able to run up to two sensor systems of different make and model.
To operate one digital camera in parallel with an analogue camera one is possible,
too. The CCNS4 will notice which kind of camera is connected and give the
appropriate commands for its use. Both cameras (in the case of two being
connected) have to be treated as separate systems and all inputs have to be made
for each camera system separately (except the ADD EXPO, see below). Which
settings are available on this page, depends on the type of the sensor connected.

5.3.1 DIGITAL CAMERA

5.3.1.1 DIGICAM

If a DigiCAM is connected directly to the CCNS4 the camera will automatically be identified
by the CCNS4. The CCNS4 is not only able to trigger the camera and handle the feedback
signal. The CCNS4 provides much more features to handle the camera comfortably and
easily. The CCNS4 provides the possibIility to read out important status information from the
camera.

EXPO# The EXPOSURE COUNTER enables synchronizing


of the "mechanical" photo numbering of the aerial
camera system, with the "electronic" numbering of
the CCNS4 system by choosing a number between
"0" and "9999". The CCNS4 waypoint/photo
number will be stored in the CCNS4 Exposure File,
where all the data of corresponding photos will be
registered.

CYCLE Camera cycle warning will be lit when the time


WARN available between the just taken photo and the next
photo position is less than the entered value, which
means that there is not enough time for the camera to
get ready for the next exposure. The value can be
chosen on the SET CAMERA page #1. To give the
pilot enough time to lower his speed if necessary, it
is recommended to chose a value one or two seconds
above the camera delay.

! Note: CCNS4 will always fire at a reached waypoint,


regardless the setting for cycle warning.

EXPO DigiCAM has a shutter delay of about 0.05 s.


DLY This delay can be taken into account with the
EXPOSURE DELAY function of the CCNS4,
thereby increasing the exposure position accuracy.
The EXPOSURE DELAY will make the CCNS4
give the exposure command in advance of reaching
the waypoint. This value can be set ranging from 0
up to 2.0 seconds, in 0.05 second increments.
EXPO DLY can be set to Auto. The appropriate
value will be calculated automatically in the AUTO
function.

! Note: AUTO will calculate the required time


automatically, by measuring the time between the
release signal and the camera feed back signal. The
calculated value will be available after the first
exposure. For the first photo the last manually input
photo is used.

EXPO photos will be added before and after any remaining
photo(s) on a flight line. The CCNS4 system will
compute and display guidance information to all
remaining and added photo positions and will fire
the camera system at these positions only. The
desired number of additional photos can range from
0 to 9 shots. The CCNS4 system will automatically
calculate the additional photo positions. Only the
remaining photos - no additional photos - will be
taken, when ADD EXP is set to "0".
! Note: Add double the number of necessary pictures in the
ADD EXPO, when only ODD or EVEN photos
remain to be taken, because the system will require
the quantity (number) of waypoints and not photo
points.

RLS The RELEASE MODE defines how the CCNS4


MODE initiates exposures.

Possible selections:

ALL Exposures will be initiated by the


CCNS4 at all waypoints.
EVEN Exposures will be initiated by the
CCNS4 at all even waypoints.
ODD Exposures will be initiated by the
CCNS4 at all odd waypoints.
NONE No exposures are initiated by the
CCNS4.

5.3.1.2 DMC

If a DMC camera is connected to the CCNS4 via the Digital Camera Interface (DCI), the
camera will be automatically identified by the CCNS4. The CCNS4 is not only able to trigger
the camera and handle the feedback signal. The CCNS4 provides much more features to
handle the camera comfortably and easily. The CCNS4 provides the possibility to read out
important status information from the camera. E.g. whether the camera is ready to take images
or if the self test has no success.
It is also possible to set the camera to different Exposure Modes, to correct the light values
with correction factors or to set the light values manually.

POWER From here, it is possible to start the camera or shut it


down The possible commands are:

ON Powers up the camera.

OFF Shuts down the camera to Standby


Mode. It is now possible to switch the
camera off via the button on the camera.

Restart Restarts the camera if in standby


mode. Also the power item is a status
information of the power up sequence of
the DMC.

The following information is displayed:

SELFTEST DMC is in SELFTEST modus.


STANDBY DMC is in STAND BY modus.
PWRUP DMC is in POWER UP modus.
READY DMC is ready for operation.
NO COMM No communication with the DMC.

! Note: If the DMC Photo Flight Mode (PFM) is in ON


status the POWER OFF command reset first the
PFM to OFF. The Power info remains to READY
and only the next POWER OFF command shut
down the DMC to the STANDBY mode.

! Note: This function is also helpful if the CCNS4 has leave


the photo flight mode and the DMC don't follow on
what ever reason.

EXPM Exposure Mode can be used to control in which


way the DMC set the light values for the camera
groups. There are two modes (AUTO/MANUAL)
available.

AUTO The exposure values are calculated


automatically with the light meter
measurements of the camera. These
values can be corrected in the range of
-3 and +3. The correction values are
added by the camera as a constant offset
to the light values that are calculated by
the camera.

MEAS Measured values from the


light meter.
USE DMC used light values for
the images.
COR Corrections to the measured
light meter values.

The following settings are possible:

COR P Correction for the Pan chromatic sensor


group.
COR N Correction for the Near-Infrared (NIR)
sensor group.
COR C Correction for the color (RGB) sensor
group.

MANUAL In the manual mode the DMC operator


has the full control over the light values
for each camera group. The set values
are used by the DMC for every image.
Value settings between 7 and 20 are
possible.

values for each camera group will be
averaged by a selectable count of
measurements.

AVCNT The average count defines how many measurements


are used for the light values averaging. A high value
gives a smoother light value average then a lower.

the camera comfortably and easily. The CCNS4 provides the possibility to read out important
status information from the camera and give information to the camera (e.g. ground speed,
hight above ground and project data).

EXPO# The EXPOSURE COUNTER is automatically


synchronized after the first released photo. There is
no need to make changes.

5.3.1.5 GEOSYSTEM 3-DAS-1

The 3-DAS-1 system is connected directly to the CCNS4 via the CAM1 port only.

The system must be selected in the SYS CONFIG #2 menu.

RLS MODE Enables the camera activation by the CCNS4.

Two settings are selectable:

TRIG The CCNS4 will activate the


3-DAS-1 system at the first
waypoint of a line and stop the
recording at the last waypoint of the
line.

NONE No triggering of the 3-DAS-1


system. All 3-DAS-1 activation
must be done by the 3-DAS-1
system operator.

ADD BASE The ADD BASE function defines how many


baselength (defined in the flight planning)
before and after any remaining bases on a
flight line will be added. The CCNS4 calculate
the new start/end points of the remaining senor
legs. Guidance information to all remaining
sensor legs will be displayed and start/stop
commands to the 3-DAS-1 system at these
new calculated positions will be send.

Only the remaining sensor legs and no


additional legs will be added, when ADD
BASE is set to "0".

SENS STAT The initial SENSOR STATUS must be entered


manually.The sensor has only a one way
communication and provide no status
information.
The CCNS4 needs the sensor status for proper
triggering the sensor stage.

5.3.1.6 FLIR THERMACAM

The ThermaCam (from CCNS4 side called THERMCAM or TCAM) system has to be
connected to the CCNS4 via the CAM1 port only.

The ThermaCam must be selected in the SYS CONFIG #2, SENS TYPE: TCAM.

RLS MODE Enables the camera activation by the CCNS4.

Two settings are selectable:

TRIG The CCNS4 will activate the


THERMCAM system at the first
waypoint of a line and stop the
recording at the last waypoint of the

5.3.2 FILM BASED CAMERA

EXPO# The EXPOSURE COUNTER enables synchronizing

number will be stored in the CCNS4 Exposure File,

! Note: LMK 1000s can be upgraded with the IGI made


"Internal Data/GPS Interface" featuring this option
and more. This interface will electronically upgrade
any LMK 1000 to the standard of the LMK 2000.
The camera system will then give the appropriate
number to the CCNS4.

FOCAL The focal length of the used lens cone given in mm


is used for calculation of the actual photo scale.

EXPO Aerial cameras do have a certain delay before the


DLY shutter opens and the exposure will be taken. The
CCNS4 takes this exposure delay (EXPO DLY) in
account and gives the release command in advance
of reaching the waypoint. This value can be set
ranging from 0 up to 2.0 seconds, in 0.05 second
increments.

Aerial camera systems that feature a feed back


signal (GPS signal, instant of exposure signal, etc.)
can be set to AUTO. The appropriate value will be
calculated automatically in the AUTO function.

! Note: AUTO will calculate the required time


automatically, by measuring the time between the
exposure signal and the camera feed back signal
(GPS pulse). The last manual exposure delay is used
as a delay for the first exposure. The further
measured time delays will be used for the averaged
automatic exposure delay. The actual used exposure
delay is displayed in the CAMERA INFO page.

The EXPOSURE DELAY value has to be


determined manually and set in the CCNS4 for
cameras that do not feature a feed back signal. The
necessary parameters for the determination of the
EXPOSURE DELAY can be taken from the photo
index of already flown missions.

Example: Whilst determining the position of the


photo centers from the photo index, it might become
apparent, that the photos that have been taken with a
shutter speed of 1/100th of a second, are an average
value of 50 meters to late. An EXPOSURE DELAY
of 1.0 second would have to be introduced, if the
aircraft's ground speed was 100 kts (corresponding
to 50 m/sec).

! Note: A RMK-A camera system, for example, is fired with


a shutter speed of 1/500 of a second, the delay
between the exposure signal and the actual taking of
the photograph will be around 0.2 s. The delay will
be around 1.5 second for shutter speeds of 1/60 of a
second.

! Note: A RMK-TOP has fixed shutter delay of 0.06 s. This


delay can be taken into account with a manual set
start value for the exposure delay of 0.05 sec and
then use of the AUTO function.

EXPO The EXPOSURE ADD function defines how many


ADD photos will be added before and after any remaining
photo(s) on a flight line. The CCNS4 system will
compute and display guidance information to all
remaining and added photo positions and will fire
the camera system at these positions only. The
desired number of additional photos can range from
0 to 9 shots. The CCNS4 system will automatically
calculate the additional photo positions. Only the
remaining photos - no additional photos - will be
taken, when EXP ADD is set to "0".

! Note: Add double the number of necessary pictures in the


EXPO ADD, when only ODD or EVEN photos
remain to be taken, because the system will require
the quantity (number) of waypoints and not photo
points.

RLS The release mode (RLS MODE) defines whether the


MODE CCNS4 (ALL/EVEN/ODD), or the connected
camera system with the conventional method
(TRIG/NONE), initiates exposures.

Possible selections:

ALL exposures will be initiated by the


CCNS4 at all waypoints.
EVEN exposures will be initiated by the
CCNS4 at all even waypoints.
ODD exposures will be initiated by the
CCNS4 at all odd waypoints.
TRIG the CCNS4 will operate the camera
system semi-automatically (trigger),
meaning that the camera will be
activated at the beginning of a line by
the CCNS4. The CCNS4 will however
NOT fire the camera system at
waypoints. Photos have to be initiated by
the camera system itself (camera
operator)! Set the camera system's
intervalometer to the indication
appropriate for your camera system..
NONE all functions of the camera system have
to be operated manually (as though no
CCNS4 is connected to it).

! Note: The function of giving the exposure control to the


aerial camera system (TRIG/NONE) and using the
CCNS4 system for guidance only, may be useful for
flying large scale aerial photography and when
expecting large terrain height differences. The
intervalometer of the aerial camera system should
than be used for firing the camera.
If RLS MODE is set to TRIG then the CCNS4 will
start the camera at the beginning of a line, but will
not stop it at the end of a line, nor initiate exposures.
This has to be done manually.
Exception: RMK-TOP and LMK 2000.

! Note: If RLS MODE is set to TRIG or NONE, the


CAMERA INFO page displays EXPO WPT: RC 30
and RMKT, resp.

ONLINE For film based cameras it is sometimes


EXPO recommended to release exposures in front of the
planned ones.This is necessary to avoid problems
which can result from film distortions or color
changes by Near Infra Red at the first exposures of
the film.
The number of additional exposures can be set to a
maximum of 5 which will be released automatically
when the aircraft is online before the first waypoint
is reached.
If the first waypoint is reached before the preset
number of photos could be taken, the CCNS4 leaves
the ONLINE EXPO mode and releases the camera
as planned.

FMC The forward motion compensation (FMC) value is


CTRL sent from the CCNS4 to the camera or it must be
calculated by the camera itself. FMC CTRL should
be set to the wanted mode (CCNS or 'Camera Type
e.g. RC30').

! Note: LMK-1000 need IGI’s "Internal LMK 1000


Data/GPS Interface".

! Note: RMK-TOP users have to manually switch the FMC


control ON and OFF on the TTL.

! Note: It is not possible to have the FMC CTRL and DRIFT


CTRL separately with an LMK 2000.

! Note: RC20 and RC30 have to be set to SPIRAL MODE


and 0% overlap if the FMC value from the CCNS4
shall be used.

DATA activates or deactivates the Data Annotation on Film


ANNO feature. Activation is displayed by the type of co-
ordinate system selected (WGS84 or XY-LOC).
Deactivation will be indicated by NONE.

5.4. SET SENSOR #2

This page will only become accessible when a sensor system is connected to the CAM2 plug
on the CCNS4 rear side.

All main functions will be the same as in SET SENSOR #1. All sensor settings can be entered
and handled separately for CAM #2.

COMMON FUNCTIONS FOR EACH SENSOR

● ONLINE START/STOP
● EXPO ADD

These settings are interconnected for SENSOR #1 and SENSOR #2. Only the last entered
value will be accepted and displayed, regardless if this value has been entered in SET
SENSOR #1/#2 or SET SYSTEM.

For settings please refer to chapter SET SENSOR #1.

! Note: Single camera operations should always be achieved with CAM 1 plug on the
CCNS4 rear side.

! Note: When operating a dual camera system set up and using the CCNS4 for guidance
only, do not forget to set the second camera system to the required settings as
well.

! Note: It is not yet possible to flight plan for two different focal lengths to be used in one
mission. It is therefore necessary to do the flight planning for the camera system
with the longer focal length (e.g. one camera with 150 mm and the other with 300
mm, flight plan in 300 mm). The camera system with the shorter focal length has
to be set to ODD or EVEN in the EXPO WPT in SET CAMERA, so that it will
take every second picture only. It is very important to distinguish between the two
different cameras.

5.5. SET MOUNT #1

MOUNT TYPE
The following mount types are supported:

DRIFT Determines, if the drift setting of the camera system


CTRL is done by the CCNS4. Therefore it is needed to
connect the DG to the CCNS4. If an AEROcontrol is
connected, the drift setting can also be done by the
AEROcontrol.

This is possible with the following camera mounts:

PAV 20
PAV 30
AS 3
GSM 3000
SM 2000
SM 1000 with IGIs Internal LMK 1000 Data/GPS
Interface
T-AS

Drift control has to be set manually if none of these


devices/software has been fitted, or the CTRL is
being set to OFF (indicated by the camera model).
! Note: DRIFT CONTROL is not possible with stabilized
mounts, unless they have been switched OFF.
DRIFT Determines the base on which thecalculation for the
SET camera mount is made.

Possible settings are:

TTK True track. In this case, the value is


displayed as DRIFT TTK in the bottom
right corner of the SHORT INFO display
and will be given to the mount. This will
correct the correction necessary
due to wind only.
DTK If desired track has been selected, the
CCNS4 will also include the angle in-
between the true and desired track. This
will keep the camera always parallel to
the planned flightline.

! Note: This option is only available, if DRIFT CTRL is set


to CCNS or AEROcontrol. If DRIFT CTRL is set to
MOUNT, this option is automatically fixed to
mount.
! Note: It will be necessary to check during a test flight, if
the gyro mount is fast enough. This will especially
be required, if bigger yaw rates (heading changes
due to, for example, an inexperienced pilot or wind
shear) are to be expected. Check which method
works best for the pilot by comparing the line
alignment of the exposed pictures.
! Note: DTK is not possible with the Carl Zeiss Jena,
SM2000 mount, unless it has been modified to the
FAST MODE.

DRIFT The offset of the mount can be set from –5.0 deg up
OFFS to 5.0 deg in 0.1 deg increments.

STAB If the camera is mounted in a GSM 3000 mount, the


MODE automatic stabilization should be done by the mount.
Therefor, this option has to be set to AEC/MOUNT.
In this mode, the AEROcontrol will only provide the
levelling information to the mount, while the
stabilization will be performed by the mount. It is
also possible, to let the stabilization be done by the
AEROcontrol but this method will not work as
smooth as the first one. Therefor, AEC has to be
chosen. If this option is set to mount, stabilisation
and levelling are done by the mount.

STAB Activates the mount stabilization either permanently


ACTV or only when the aircraft is online. Off deactivates
the stabilisation permanently.
! Note: The mount stabilization only works if the camera is
set to record mode. Please read the camera manual
for further information.

5.6. SET MOUNT #2

Refer to SET MOUNT #1. All main functions will be the same as in SET MOUNT #1.
All mount settings can be entered and handled separately for MOUNT #2.
! Note: AEROcontrol can only control one stabilised mount at a time.

5.7. SYSTEM TEST

The SYSTEM TEST page provides several options for the testing of the CCNS4 and the
connected camera system(s) on the ground.

EVT If an AEROcontrol, Z-Fly or Z-Xtreme is installed


and the event cable is properly connected, the
current event number is displayed here.
! Note: If an AEROcontrol is installed, a missing event
message is indicated by EVT ERR in the upper right
corner of the nav display.

EXP After entering a certain number of photos, and


TEST pushing the SEL/ENT knob, the camera system will
release the selected photos in intervals of approx. 2.5
seconds. Cabling and communication between the
CCNS4 and the camera system(s) are correct, if
everything works as mentioned above.
The number displayed in brackets is the
EXPOSURE COUNTER. The values inside the
counter must increase with each photo taken!
If necessary, the default of 10 Exposures as
maximum can be raised up to 9999 on the SYSTEM
CONFIG PAGE #1.
! Note: Make sure that EXP RLS on the SET CAMERA
page is not set to NONE.

DRIFT The drift setting mechanism of the camera system(s)


TEST can be tested by entering a certain value of drift via
the SEL/ENT knob, if the drift setting of the aerial
camera(s) is managed by the CCNS4 system. The
camera mount must reach the entered value.
! Note: This function will only work in the NAV OFF mode
(refer to EXIT at the end of this paragraph).
! Note: DRIFT TEST is not working if the GSM 3000
mount is controlled by AEROcontrol.
The FMC can be tested using the DRIFT TEST. On
the ground, the input values for DRIFT that can be
entered in increments of 1° will result in specific
values of FMC (preset by IGI). One specific value of
DRIFT has to be selected for one specific

(correlated) value of FMC.These are:

Drift +30° => FMC 0,16 rad/sec

STAB TEST
Gyro mount test. Enter ON and check if the gyro
mount works correctly.

ANNUNCIATOR TEST
The CDI (Course Deviation Indicator) and GSI
(Glide Slope Indicator) and TO/FROM FLAG can
be tested, if connected to the CCNS4 system.
It is possible to test the:

CDI left/centered/right
GSI up/level/down
TO/FROM TO/OFF/FROM

DEVIATION TABL
The correct input of the aircraft's deviation table can
be checked here. The first value is the compass
indication and the second the "to steer" value.
! Note: It is only possible to store one deviation table per
mission card. It will therefore be necessary to have
one mission card per aircraft, or it will be necessary
to update the mission card with the correct deviation
card, whenever aircrafts have been changed (refer to
the WinMP Manual ch. 8).
STOP Select YES with the SEL/ENT knob and press the
NAV SEL/ENT button. The CCNS4 logo will appear and
the SELECT PROJECT page will become available.
! Note: Do not exit the NAV mode until your mission has
been completed, The CCNS4 will stop to manage
the sensor(s) and will close all log files.

5.8. SYSTEM CONFIG

The SYSTEM CONFIGURATION allows to change the default values for the whole system,
meaning for example: whether an english or metric system is used, the data format of the
interconnected Directional Gyro (DG), and so forth.
! Note: List any changes that you make in the table provided in the paragraph "SET
SYSTEM DEFAULTS", of the Supplemental.
The SYSTEM CONFIG pages will become available by the menu SET SYSTEM, item SYS
CFG: yes. The data on this page should only be changed by authorized personnel.
! Note: Access this feature only in the NAV OFF mode (CCNS4 logo visible).

5.8.1. SYSTEM CONFIG #1

DWPT DISPLAY WAYPOINT will enable the CCNS4 to


display more than only the next waypoint. It will be
possible to display up to the next five waypoints on
the NAV screen. This can be useful if a several
segments have to be flown, enabling the pilot to be
"ahead of the aircraft" (in advance, expecting turns).

LINE Line size, being the thickness of the PHOTO LINE


displayed on the CCNS4 CRT(s). Changing to a
thicker line than the standard one and is intended for
the 3 inch PDU (Pilots Display Unit).

TRK Allows to set the resolution of the TRUE TRACK


(TTK) gauge from 1 deg up to 0.1 deg.

ZOOM The area displayed on the CRT(s) (to the left/right


and in front of the aircraft) can be zoomed for
different tasks, being for example a higher accuracy
that might be required when being on the line and
for comfort, when flying to, or entering an area.
There are three different zooms available, letting
you access the following scales in either nautical
miles or kilometers:

COARSE: 0,1/0,5/1,0 with factors of x1/x10/x100


MEDIUM: 0,1/0,4/0,8/1,0 with factors of
x1/x10/x100
FINE: 0,1/0,2/0,4/0,6/0,8/1,0 with factors of
x1/x10/x100
! Note: maximum value is 800 nm or km.

EXP If necessary, the maximum number of test exposures


TEST available on the SYSTEM TEST page can be raised
to higher values up to 9999.

CDU Type of monitor connected, being TFT or CRT


MODEL (Cathode Ray Tube).
! Note: This setting is valid for both CDU ports. If a CRT is
run in parallel with a TFT, the user should try and
find out which setting works better.
CDI Guidance information can also be given to a
COURSE Deviation Indicator and the sensitivity of
the instrument be set as desired using the CDI item.
It can be varied from 0.1 nm/FS to 5.0 nm/FS in
steps of 0.1 nm/FS (FS = Full Scale). This will
change the CDI from a "degree of course" into a
"distance of course" indicator, just like with an
RNAV. Default is 1 nm/FS.

GSI This item will change the sensitivity of the GSI


depending on the mode selected in the VDI-MODE.
In case of ALT, the sensitivity can be set from 100
ft/FS to 5000 ft/FS in steps of 100 ft. For the case of
DIS, the sensitivity can be set from 0.1 nm/FS to 9.9
nm/FS in steps of 0.1 nm. Default is 1000 ft/FS and
1 nm/FS resp.

GSI The GLIDE SLOPE indicator can also be used as a


MODE guidance instrument in conjunction with the CCNS4
system.
The GSI can run on two different settings. These
are:

ALT altitude mode


DIS distance mode

When ALT is set, the desired altitude for the current


flight line will be indicated.
When DIS is set, the distance to the next
waypoint/photo on the line flown will be indicated.
Set the GSI-Mode to either ALT or DIS.

ALT Allows for adjusting the division of the altitude scale


on the right side of the NAV screen from 5 ft up to
500 ft per devision. Default value is 100 ft per
division.

GS Allows the adjusting the division of the rated ground


speed scale on the left side of the NAV screen from.
The scale can be set to 2, 5, 10 and 20 kts per
division.

XTD Unit of the Cross Track Deviation in nautical miles


(nm, default) or kilometers (km).

QNH Unit used for the entry of the QNH (atmospheric


pressure) in hectopascal (hPa, default) or inches of
mercury (inHg).

OAT Unit used for the Outside Air Temperature in


degrees Celsius (°C, default) or degrees Fahrenheit
(°F), entered manually.

DEV Deviation table has to be updated each time that


changes have been made to the aircraft´s compass
deviation card. These changes have to be entered in
the WinMP (old: ) and must then be loaded into the
airborne computer by selecting LOAD with the
select knob and pressing SEL/ENT. Resetting to
zero can be achieved by selecting CLEAR with the
SEL/ENT knob, pressing SEL/ENT. Once the
clearing has been accepted, DEV: CLEARED will
appear.
! Note: It is only possible to store one deviation card per
mission card. It is therefore necessary, either to have
one mission card per aircraft, or to update the
mission card with the correct deviation card,
whenever aircrafts have been changed (refer to the

SENS Usually the SENS TYPE will be detected


TYPE automatically by cable coding or serial
communication via the Digital Camera Interface
(DCI) or sensor direct.
But for special sensor systems, this coding is not
available. In this case, the sensor system must be
selected manually.
! Note: The manually selected sensor must always be
connected to camera port #1.

DCI INFO Enables the Digital Camera Interface Info which will
bring up the DCI-INFO page in the Info Mode with
information of the DCI.

AEC Enables an additional info page with information of

DMC You can decide if the DMC shall create a new

SBAS Selection of the used Satellite Augmentation System


(SBAS). Refer to Ch. 12.6.2

For Europe, EGNOS should be selected.


The selection for America is WAAS.

RCI Recording interval can be set from 0.2 up to 5.0


seconds (only Z-Xtreme and Z-Fly).

FMT The DATA CARD inserted in the Z-Xtreme can be


CRD formatted from the CCNS4 (only Z-Xtreme and Z-
fly).

MEP Mid-pulse slope defines the kind of signal given by


the CCNS4 to any external GPS receiver (optional
equipment), being either:

ACT LOW: will lower the voltage on the


external event line to 0 volts
(ground the line) upon
receiving the external event
signal from the sensor.
ACT HIGH: will raise (heighten) the
voltage on the external event
line from 0 volts upon
receiving the external event
signal from the sensor.

6. INFO MODE
The INFO MODE provides information for the pilot and the camera operator/navigator.
The SHORT INFO and the NAV INFO pages may be used by the pilot and operator.
The DCI INFO page appears, if DCI INFO was enabled on the SYS CFG page #2. It displays
information which comes from the DIGITAL CAMERA INTERFACE (DCI).
The Camera INFO page is especially useful for the camera operator.
The GPS INFO page provides information on the actual status of the GPS system that is in
operation with the CCNS4.
It will be replaced by the AEROcontrol INFO pages, if an AEROcontrol has been connected.

6.1. SHORT INFO

The “SHORT INFO” page gives a brief summary of the most important data displayed in big
letters on all info pages.

LINE Currently selected line.


Positive sign meaning, that the flight line has to be
flown from the planned start point to the planned
end point.
Negative sign meaning, that the flight line has to be
flown from the planned end point to the planned
start point.

DTK Desired (planned) Track of the selected flightline.

WPT Number of the next waypoint. This number will be


updated after each exposure and waypoint,
respectively. In the lower left corner of this field, the
segment number is displayed.

REM. Number of remaining photos on the chosen flight


PHOTO line. This number will be updated after each
exposure and waypoint respectively.

TES Time up to the end of the line segment in minutes


and seconds.

DES Distance up to the end of the line segment in


nautical miles.

DRIFT Values for drift settings will automatically be


displayed according to the standards of the

● LEICA/WILD : 330° via 360° to 30°


● CARL ZEISS JENA: -30° via 0° to +30°
● ZEISS-Oberkochen: R30 via 0° to W30
Actual drift corrections are calculated by the
CCNS4 system using DG information and
the true track (TTK) of the aircraft, derived
from GPS positioning. A stable drift
computation will be available in
approximately 30 seconds following turns,
depending on the aircraft's DG.
The camera mount has to be interfaced
appropriately for automatic drift setting.
The displayed drift corrections can be used
for manual drift setting of the camera system.

ARROW The arrow indicates the relative wind direction,


coming from the left or right side of the current
flight line (in this example the wind is blowing from
the left side).
! Note: The displayed drift information is based on camera
port #1.

6.2. CAMERA INFO #1

! Note: The CCNS4 is able to run up to two camera systems, of different make and
model. Operating IGI´s camera cables, the CCNS4 will notice which kind of
camera system is connected and will give the appropriate commands for its use.
Both cameras (in the case of two being connected) have to be treated as separate
systems and all inputs have to be made for each camera system separately (except
the EXPO ADD and ONLINE DIS, see below).

6.2.1. DIGITAL CAMERAS

6.2.1.1. DIGICAM

CAM The CCNS4 will acknowledge the model of camera


system that is connected and will display it.

MOD Model, here H22

STAT The CCNS4 is able to give a report of the interfaced


camera system. If the DIGICAM is connected and
the communication is established, then OK is
displayed.

EXP# The Exposure counter will indicate the exposure


number as it is being counted by the CCNS4.

DLY delay will be measured on every exposure and the
average will be taken into account for the next
release.

RLS Indicates which waypoints have been selected on the

EXPO# The Exposure counter will indicate the exposure


number as it is being counted by the camera system.

FDS Gives the amount of free space for each camera


FRE group (Panchromatic (P), Near Infrared (N) and
RGB (R)).

FDS Indicates, if the DMC should create a new directory


DIR for the image data for each line, area, project or
session (the latter will write all data of a whole day
in one directory), according to the preset in the
SYSTEM CONFIGURATION, page #2 (ch.5.8.2).

AUTO Indicates the automatic exposition has been engaged


LVAL on the SET CAMERA page.

MANUAL Indicates the manual exposition has been engaged


LVAL on the SET CAMERA page.

AVERAGE Indicates the average exposition has been engaged


LVAL on the SET CAMERA page.

The table displays separately for the panchromatic (P), the near-
infrared (N) and the RGB (C) sensor the exposition values.

The values in the MEAS column are the actual measured values
of the DMC light meter.

The column USE contains the light values used by the DMC for
exposition and include the correction values in exposure mode
'AUTO' and 'AVERAGE'.

If the EXPM is set to automatic exposition, right coloum shows


the corrections that are added to the measured values The
correction values are set manually on the SET SENSOR page.

If the EXPM is set to manual exposition, the right column shows


the average of the measured light values

If the EXPM is set to average exposition, right coloum shows


the corrections that are added to the averaged values The
correction values are set manually on the SET SENSOR page.

EXP# The Exposure counter will indicate the exposure


number as it is being counted by the CCNS4.

EXPO Shows the average of the exposure delay. The


DLY delay will be measured on every exposure and the
average will be taken into account for the next
release.

RLS The EXPOSURE CONTROL defines whether the


CCNS4 (ALL), or the connected camera system
with the conventional method (NONE), initiates
exposures.
The function of giving the exposure control to the
aerial camera system (NONE) and using the CCNS4
system for guidance only, may be useful for flying
large scale aerial photography and when expecting
large terrain height differences.

Possible selections:

ALL Exposures will be initiated by the


CCNS4 at all waypoints.
NONE All functions of the camera system have
to be operated manually (as though no
CCNS4 was connected to it).

6.2.2. FILM BASED CAMERA

CAMERA The CCNS4 will acknowledge the model of camera


system that is connected and will display it.

MODE This is a reminder for the camera operator to set the


RC 30 to SPIRAL MODE and the RMK TOP to
SINGLE MODE.

STATUS The CCNS4 is able to give the current status report


of the interfaced camera system, when a LMK
2000/3000 (LMK 1000 with the Internal Data/GPS
Interface), a RC-30 or a RMKT is connected.

EXPO# The Exposure counter will indicate the exposure


number as it is being counted by the camera system
(after the first exposure), when a LMK 2000/3000
(LMK 1000 with the Internal Data/GPS Interface) or
an RC-30 is connected.
The numbering will be done automatically by the
CCNS4. CCNS4 numbers will however differ from
the exposure counter, if any other model of camera
than the ones above is interfaced.

FOCAL The focal length of the used lens cone given in mm.

SCALE The reproduction scale resulting from the used focal


length and flight height.

EXPO Shows the average of the exposure delay. The


DLY delay will be measured on every exposure and the
average will be taken into account for the next
release.

All main functions will be the same as in CAMERA #1.
All camera settings can be entered and handled separately for CAM #2.

Exceptions are:

ONLINE DIS and EXPO ADD

These settings are interconnected for CAM #1 and CAM #2.


Only the last entered value will be accepted and displayed, regardless if this value has been
entered in SET CAMERA #1 or #2, and will be used for both cameras.
! Note: This page will only become accessible when a camera system is connected to
camera jack #2 on the CCNS4 airborne computer.

TTW Time up to the next waypoint in hours, minutes and


seconds.

DTK Desired track in degrees. Information taken from the


mission planning and the chosen flight line.

DALT Desired altitude in feet taken from the mission

6.8. AEC INFO #2

on this page to ease the troubleshooting.

In the initial mode the different pages changes every 10 seconds. By the first push of
SEL/ENT the mode change to single page mode. The actual page will stay and a further push
of the SEL/ENT knob call the next page

7. GUIDANCE INFORMATION
All functions of the CCNS4 system can be accessed with the knobs and buttons on each
Command and Display Unit. The standard Display Unit is the "Command & Display Unit"
(CDU), which has a 5-inch TFT display. 9” diagonal is optionally available. It is possible to
operate two Display Units in parallel, e.g. one unit for the pilot and the other one for the
sensor operator.

The display screen is divided in two parts. The left 2/3rds of the display is for guidance
information and the right 1/3rd of the display is for management functions.
The left part of the display offers the graphic flight information. An aircraft symbol can be
seen in the lower central part. The display is an "on top view". The dashed line in front of the
aircraft symbol indicates the current flight direction (true course).
The solid line represents the planned line which has to be flown. The pilot has to bring the
dashed line on top of the solid line, in order to track the planned terrestrial line. The principle
is 'follow the line', similar to a standard VOR´s CDI deflection presentation.
There are three possible symbols on the planned flight lines (also refer to the Supplemental,
BASELENGTH vs. MARKERDIST):

A circle represents the marker- or interception point. This symbol is an


aim point and will help the pilot to have the aircraft completely 'stabilized
and on the line' before the first photo is taken. The distance between the
marker point (circle) and the first photo can be chosen at leisure on the
SET SYSTEM page of the SETUP MODE (ch. 5.2).

A big square represents the next photo or waypoint.

A small square represents the photo after the next (up to 5), refer to ch.
5.8.2, paragraph SYSTEM SETUP, DWPT in the SYS CFG MENU.

The quadrangle on the upper left displays the following information:


Number of Satellites (left, here 09) informs you about the number of
satellites that are currently being received by the GPS receiver.

GPS QUALITY INDICATOR (right, CCNS4 only) is the PDOP value


"Position Dilution Of Precision" given by the GPS receiver and stands for
the accuracy of the GPS position that is currently being achieved. This
value will vary with the number of satellites that are being received and
their constellation. Values may vary between 1 - 99, where 1 is the best
achievable value.

AEROcontrol Standard Deviation (right, AEROcontrol only) indicates the


position accuracy (RMS) of the current AEROcontrol positions, by
displaying the meter value (here 2 meters).

1 - 10 meters in meters
11 - 95 meters in 5-meter increments

The upper central part of the screen contains MAGNETIC HEADING


information in degrees (here 002°). The information is supplied by the
directional gyro of the aircraft. If there is no DG or not connected, then
TRUE TRACK from the GPS will be displayed.

The TRUE TRACK in degrees (here 360°) sits on top of the dashed line
(below the DG information).

The sliding triangle on the right scale indicates the PLANNED


ALTITUDE. The thin frame and the opposite triangle indicates the
CURRENT ALTITUDE in feet fixed in the WinMP mission planning.

A sliding scale similar to the altitude scale can be seen on the left side of
the display. This scale has the fixed dimension of 2 nm. The left triangle
on the bottom end of the scale indicates the position at which the camera
will be fired by the CCNS4. The moving triangle on the right indicates the
approaching photo point (waypoint). The triangle will start to move down
the scale, whenever a photo point is within 2 nm (in front) of the airplane.
The camera will be fired at the moment when both triangles touch each
other.
! Note: The moving triangle will not start at the top of the scale, but at the corresponding
distance, if the base length between photos is less than 2 nm. An arrow will
appear at the top end of the scale, if the distance to the next photo is larger than 2
nm.

The axis perpendicular to the aircraft symbol represents the area that can
be monitored by the system to the left and right of the plane. This area can
be zoomed from COARSE, MEDIUM to FINE in nautical miles or
kilometers (refer to ch. 5.8.1, paragraph ZOOM), by pushing the ZOOM
IN or OUT knobs.
here are two 'blocks' to the left and right of the aircraft symbol. These
blocks define the gap-limit. The pilot has to keep the line that has to be
flown (the a/c), between these two blocks, otherwise no photos are taken.
! Note: If AUTOMATIC has been set on the SET SYSTEM page, the GAP value for the
Gap-Limit entered during the mission planning with WinMP will be used.
The CAMERA symbol appears in the upper right corner of the guidance
display, once the aircraft is within the planned Gap-Limit, and the time to
the next photo has reached the online start range.
A TO/FROM flag can be seen in front of, or behind the aircraft, depending
on the location of the waypoint.
! Note: In order to take photos, the TO/FROM flag must be in the TO position. The
aircraft will have to be turned and a new approach will become necessary, if the
flag should indicate a FROM. If the shot is to be skipped at this time, a new photo
can be selected by pressing SEL/ENT and turning the SEL/ENT button. The
selected position then has to be confirmed by pressing SEL/ENT again. The
display will now bring you to the next photo. This feature will only be available
on the SHORT INFO page.

guidance info, display the following information:

MKR
Magnetic bearing and distance to the marker point in degrees/nm. This
helps to find the beginning of the line.

DIS
Distance to the next waypoint (photo) in nm..

XTD
Cross track deviation in nautical miles (nm) or kilometers (km) (here: 0.00
nm).The arrow to the left or the right of the XTD indicates the direction in
which the pilot has to steer for an optimal 180 degrees turn.

ALTITUDE
depending on the SETUP (SET SYSTEM page of the SETUP MODE)
(here 6620 ft):

7.1. RATED GROUND SPEED AND TRIGGER MODE

Spezial sensors like digital cameras or line scanner needs an optimized ground speed to get
best quality of the scanned data. Therefore an optional scale for optimized speed is selectable
on the SET SYSTEM page instead of the default distance scale.

!NOTE: Detailed information of the availiable options are described in the SET SYSTEM
chapter.

The sliding triangle on the right scale indicates the CURRENT GROUND SPEED. The thin
frame and the opposite triangle indicates the RATED GROUND SPEED in knots.

The triangle on the planned line shows the start of the sensor leg and the TRG icon in the
upper top of the NAV screen indicates a sensor who is set to RLS MODE TRIGGER.

7.2. ADDITIONAL STATUS INDICATIONS

7.2.1. TOP LEFT CORNER

ALTITUDE HOLD
will appear when the GPS receiver operates in the 2D-Mode (only three
satellites are available) and no input of a pressure altitude sensor is
available.

DEAD RECKONING
will appear 3 seconds after a positioning information failure of the GPS
sensor. The next photos on the flight line may be taken, if the aircraft is
kept straight and level.

NAV OFF
will appear if not enough navigation information is being received by the
GPS receiver and AEROcontrol, resp. (also 15 seconds after the Dead
Reckoning symbol appeared).

DGPS
appears, when the GPS receiver is being operated under Differential GPS
conditions (also refer to the Supplemental, paragraph DGPS WITH THE
INTERNAL GPS receiver).

BANK (CCNS4 AEROcontrol ONLY)


will light up when the bank angle of the aircraft exceeds 15°, indicating
that a loss of satellites is now imminent.

SUN ANGLE
Actual angle of the sun. This feature has to be enabled on SYSCFG #1
page (ch. 5.8.1).

7.2.2. BOTTOM LEFT CORNER


FMC WARN
will light up when the FMC control of the camera is to slow to compensate
for the forward motion of the aircraft.
This can happen in the case that the aircraft is to low or to fast, or a
combination of both speed and altitude AGL. The pilot must then decrease
the aircraft's speed to achieve a velocity-to-height ratio of less than 0,3.
Another reason could be a wrong ground level entered in the WinMP
mission planning (check scale), or faulty GPS readings.

ON LINE
will be lit when being within the ONLINE distance of a line.

CYC WARN
Camera cycle warning will be lit when the time available between the just
taken photo and the next photo position is less than the time chosen on the
SET SENSOR page (ch. 5.3), which means that there is not enough time
for the camera to get ready for the next exposure.

will light up when the storage capacity left on the CCNS4 mission card is
less than 100 exposures and will count down the number remaining.

If there is a fault on writing data to the CCNS4 mission card, this icon is
displayed.

RECORDING TIME
If the recording time of the AEROcontrol drops below 30 minutes, the
remaining minutes are displayed.

7.3. SENSOR/CAMERA STATUS SYMBOLS

7.3.1. CCNS4 CONTROLLED EXPOSURE RELEASE


EXPO WPT in the SETUP MODE (ch. 5.3, SET SENSOR) has to be set to ALL, ODD or
EVEN.
The CCNS4 will display the current camera status of each camera in a rectangular box in the
upper right corner of the display. It will only appear when the system is online. It will be lit
when the camera is ready, will start to blink when the exposure signal is given. It will
continue to blink until the CCNS4 receives the feedback signal from the camera.
! Note: Something is wrong with the feedback signal of the camera if the camera symbol
should continue to blink.

will be fired at the next photo point

IDLE
cameras are on "stand by". This can happen, when a waypoint is reached

TRIGGER MODE
When RLS MODE on the SET SENSOR page has been set to TRIG
(ch. 5.3.2), the CCNS4 will display on the NAV screen only triangles for
the start and the end waypoint of the selected line or each line segment if
the line is splitted.

In case of a Sensor of the type RC10/20/30 or RMK A a single exposure


release pulse will given to start the exposure sequence. The sequence must
be stopped manually with the camera controls.

If the sensor is of type LMK1000/2000 or RMK TOP the CCNS stop also
at the end of the line the camera exposure sequence automatically.

Sensors of type JAS, 3-DAS-1, THERMCAM are started and stopped


automatically if TRIGGER is selected as RLS MODE.

7.3.2. EXPOSURE RELEASE DONE BY THE CAMERA


When RLS MODE on the SET SENSOR page has been set to NONE the
CCNS4 will give instruction that the exposure release has to be done by
camera intervalometer. This is to assure proper functioning of the camera.

7.3.3. ADDITIONAL SENSOR/CAMERA INDICATIONS

Below the camera status symbol:

EXPO STOP
appears, when the EXPOSURE STOP MODE has been engaged, when the
SEL/ENT button has been pressed in the SHORT INFO mode.

STAB OFF
Indicates, that the automatic mount stabilization has been disabled.

FAILURE
Failure message from the camera, depending of the camera type. Please
refer to the manual of the camera.

WARNING
Warning message from the camera, depending of the camera type. Please
refer to the manual of the camera.

UNDREXP
Indicates, that the last taken picture has been underexposed.

8. MANAGE EXPOSURES
It might become necessary to stop taking pictures during a photo mission, due to clouds,
shadows, or other view limiting phenomena. For this reason the EXPOSURE STOP function
has been implemented into the CCNS4 system.

The EXPOSURE STOP function can be used for selecting individual photos of the current
flight line, or to start exposures of a specific line at a predetermined photo/WPT (only in
SHORT INFO).

8.1. EXPOSURE STOP

The next photo(s) will not be taken, no trigger command will be given to the aerial camera or
any other sensor system(s). This can be useful, if clouds or any other phenomena disturbing
visibility should appear.
When on a flight line, enter the SHORT INFO page and press SEL/ENT once. The
EXPOSURE STOP is now activated. To deactivate press SEL/ENT again.
An active EXPO STOP will be displayed in the following way:

EXPO STOP sign in the upper right of the display,

CROSS sign on the square photo symbol,

The EXPOSURE STOP function can be cancelled, and thus the exposing reinitiated, by
pressing the SEL/ENT knob again .
Photos that have not been taken during the EXPOSURE STOP function (at least one camera
must be connected) will be registered. A REM symbol will appear in the SELECT LINE page
of the SELECT MODE on each flight line where exposures remain to be taken. Next time the
flight is selected, the flight lines that contain remaining photos can be selected and the system
will only take the remaining photos, or a certain number in front of, or behind the desired
photo points, if entered appropriately on the SET SENSOR page (ch. 5.3, ADD EXP).
Guidance information will be given directly to the remaining photos.

8.2. SELECTING SPECIFIC WPTS

The SELECTING WPT function can be used on a mission for dividing a long flight line or
block into several parts, what might become necessary due to adverse weather conditions or
management tasks.

Therefore, the CCNS4 system has to be set to the SHORT INFO page in the INFO MODE.
After pressing the red SEL/ENT knob, the box with the WPT number on the SHORT INFO
page will be marked with thick lines. The desired photo position can be selected by turning
the SEL/ENT knob and confirmed by pressing SEL/ENT. The moving photo (WPT) number
can be seen on the screen while turning the SEL/ENT knob.

The TO/FROM flag will display the next photo (WPT) in front of or behind the aircraft.

9. MANAGE SENSOR LEGS


It might become necessary to stop a leg of a sensor mission, due to clouds, shadows, or other
reasons. For that the TRIGGER STOP function has been implemented into the CCNS4
system.

The TRIGGER STOP function can be used for selecting individual sensor bases of the current
flight line, or to start the sensor leg of a specific line at a predetermined BASE WPT (only in
SHORT INFO).

9.1. TRIGGER STOP

When on a flight line, enter the SHORT INFO page and press SEL/ENT once. The TRIGGER
STOP is now activated.
To deactivate press SEL/ENT again.

An active TRIGGER STOP will be displayed in the following way:

Sensor base that have not been taken during the TRIGGER STOP function will be registered.

10.LOG FILES
The CCNS4 airborne computer is able to register data whenever a photo is taken or being
initiated. This data will be stored, when

• the feedback signal (at the instant of exposure) is given by the aerial camera, or
• if a camera simulator plug has been installed (available at IGI) at the moment when
the CCNS4 gives the fire command.

This plug has to be used, when a video system or scanner with no feed back signal is being
used, refer to the table "Functions of the Universal Camera Interface" in the Supplemental of
this manual.

Hint: The CCNS4 system is also useful for scanner flights and video missions. It will be
useful for positioning the aircraft on the planned track and for post flight
processing in the office, including position checks, by using the following
method:
Enter a fixed base in the Mission planning, being for e.g. 0.5 km or 1.0 km or a
corresponding value in nautical miles, enabling the system to record its position
every 0,5 or 1,0 km, or any other value depending on the previously set entry. The
CCNS4 system will simulate the firing of a camera at the preprogrammed
positions, including position recording.

Any file name consists of the current date (month and day) and the current identifier (both to
be set in SETUP MODE).

! Note: All log files are stored on the CCNS4 MISSION CARD in the folder
'MISSION.LOG'.

! Note: The CCNS4 system will log the release positions in the exposure file, in the case
that the feed back signal of the aerial sensor should fail. These positions are
marked by the exposure no. 09999 for CAM1 port or 19999 for CAM2 port.

! Note: All empty files from previous flights will be deleted on each CCNS4 power up.

that current day, when it is being switched ON. Should no file with that current date (and
therefore current identifier) be found, a new file is created. Should a file exist, the system
appends any new data to this file.

All exposure file data are stored on the CCNS4 mission card (PC-card) in the
‘MISSION.LOG’ subfolder and will have to be transferred to the office based computer, if
any additional computations, drawings (photo index) etc. are to be made.

11.CHECKLIST

11.1.PREFLIGHT

• Are all WinMP plots available for the mission(s) which is/are to be flown?

• Insert the data card into the CCNS4 computer and switch the system ON.

• (AEROcontrol ONLY) Select SET SYSTEM, enter START at item AECTRL.

• Enter the SELECT MODE using the MODE button.

• Check if there is enough space on the data card for the number of pictures intended to
be taken during your mission on the data card/PC-card (bottom of the page).

• Enter the SETUP MODE by using the MODE button and step to the SET SYSTEM
page using the PAGE button. Check, if all parameter settings have the necessary
values for the mission to be flown.

• DATE

have the necessary values for the mission to be flown.

11.2.POSTFLIGHT

After landing:

• (Only CCNS4/AEROcontrol, Z-Xtreme, Z-Fly) Select SET SYSTEM, enter STOP on


the AECTRL line, then

• Enter the SETUP MODE by using the MODE button and select SYSTEM TEST page
using the PAGE button.

• Move the cursor (solid line) to the STOP NAV item using the SEL/ENT knob and
press the SEL/ENT button. Select YES and press the SEL/ENT knob to confirm the
entry.

• Shut the system down

• Remove the data card/CCNS4 mission card and download the files onto the WinMP
office computer for post flight processing and data safety.

• After checking that all files have been properly transferred to your office PC (using
the WinMP functions for data handling, ch. 4.3), delete all unnecessary files (already
transferred files), to ensure that as much storage space as possible is available for your
next mission.

12.5.DEFAULT

This paragraph contains a table that is supposed to be kept as a log for you to fill in your
specific SETUP of your CCNS4 system.

This will come in handy, when a new system setup is necessary after, for example, a Software
Update.

The column DEFAULT shows you the IGI standard presetting. The IGI engineer that initially
installed your CCNS4 system will have made some changes to this presetting whilst installing
your system, in order to suit your company's and peripheral equipment requirements.

You should note any changes that you make, so that you always have a list of settings that
will suit your needs.

12.6.DGPS WITH THE INTERNAL GPS RECEIVER

12.6.1.EXTERNAL INPUT OF RTCM-DATA


Differential GPS can be achieved with the CCNS4 internal GPS Receiver, by supplying
RTCM-104 corrections to the receiver via the connector named "DPGS" on the rear panel of
the CCNS4 Airborne Computer
The internal receiver will automatically switch to the differential mode, once valid corrections
are being received.
! Note: The type of installed internal Gps receiver is marked in the upper right corner of
the CCNS4 front plate.
The CCNS4 also provides +28V (max. 500mA) for a Data Link Receiver.

Table 1 shows the pinning of the connector and table 2 the types of connectors used.

The specified plugs (supplied by Souriau, France) are of crimp type and include a straight
cable clamp. Note, that there are a lot of other vendors with suitable plugs. Important is the
shell-size (10), the number of pins (6) and the P (for Pins and normal orientation).

12.7.CCNS4 DEMO PROGRAM

In the CCNS4 demo version the following switches and knobs are simulated using the
computer's function keys.

A CCNS4 demo version simulating all airborne flights is available on request. The simulation
program can run on PC's with full emulated VGA/CGA graphics and fonts. Some modern
PC's don't fullfil these requirements.

Installation:

1. Insert the Demo Disc into the disc drive of your office based PC.Change to disc drive
using the DOS command:
2. cd A: or cd B:
depending on your disc drive.
3. Type in: INSTALL and press <SEL/ENT>

Starting the demo:

1. Change to directory CCNSDEMO on your hard disc drive.


2. Type in: CCNS4 and press <SEL/ENT>.
3. You should now see the title screen as depicted on the top of this page.

Using the CCNS4 demo program:

1. A description of the key functions, simulating the appropriate DISPLAY UNIT key,
will be furnished after starting the program. For easier usage copy the keypad at the
end of the manual and put it on top of the keyboard.
2. Press <SEL/ENT> to skip to the SELECT PROJECT page.
3. Select the desired project by pressing <F3> or <F4> (simulating the SELECT KNOB)
until the desired project is located inside the frame and press <SEL/ENT>. (In this
case select DEMO)
4. The SELECT AREA page will appear (Still project: In the case of the project DEMO,
three areas will become available, being BLOCK, RAILWAY and SINGLE).
Select the desired area by pressing <F3> or <F4> (simulating the SELECT KNOB)
until the desired area is located inside the frame and press <SEL/ENT>.
5. The SELECT LINE page will appear. The area specific list of lines will be offered.
Select the desired line by pressing <F3> or <F4> (simulating the SELECT KNOB)
until the desired line is located inside the frame and press <SEL/ENT>.
6. The navigation display will appear.
7. You will be airborne from this point on.

Flying the mission


1. Your position will be near the first waypoint when initially starting your mission.
! Note: that you will stay at the same position if you should select a different project or
area whilst airborne, meaning that it might become necessary to fly several miles,
before you reach the first waypoint of the selected line. In this case reinitiate the
DEMO to save time.
2. Fly the mission using the cursor keys.
3. We recommend to change the type of information displayed by pressing <F1> or
<F2> (simulating the MODE and PAGE button of the Display Unit(s)), giving you an
example of how to access the different features of the CCNS4.
4. <F5> or <F6> let you zoom your display.
5. + or – change the height
6. All features of the CCNS4 can be realized with the DEMO PROGRAM.
7. The complete CCNS4 User Manual is valid for the DEMO PROGRAM.

Simulating WinMP-planned missions

As an owner of the WinMP Mission Planning Software, you might be interested in


simulating your own missions. This can be achieved with the DEMO PROGRAM.

1. Plan a mission with WinMP.


2. Set the data card PATH to C:\CCNSDEMO\
3. Transfer the mission using option data card AREA->data card as described in the
WinMP Manual.

12.8.BASELENGTH VS MARKERDIST

The two diagrams depicted show the influence of the baselength versus marker distance
entered during mission planning with WinMP and the indication on Display Units during the
photo mission.
The first diagram depicts the case that the baselength (b) is longer than the marker distance
(m). The indication on the CCNS4 Display Units will be as illustrated on the bottom line,
since the marker (circle) has come up on the display and the next exposure will be made in the
distance entered during mission planning. The marker informs the pilot that the next photo is
about to be taken.

The second diagram below shows the case, that the baselength is shorter than the marker
distance. This will result in the seeming vanishing of marker points. They will no longer be
displayed. They are still there, but will not be displayed, because they would not inform the
pilot of the next photo, but actually the one after next.

! Note: It is therefore necessary to account for this effect during mission planning and to
differentiate between a circle, being a marker point (no photo) and the quadrangle
being a photo point (one photo), when airborne.
