ABSTRACT
The aim of this study was to evaluate the mental health status of geriatric population in rural
setting of Temuhani village of Mirsharai Upazila, Chattogram. We have tried to evaluate the
effects of socio-economic status, gender predisposition on the level of dependency with the level
of depression & dementia. It was a descriptive type of cross-sectional study. The sample size was
110. It was selected by using purposive sampling technique. Data was collected on 22nd January,
2020 by face to face interview method with the help of a prepared mixed questionnaire.
The focus of our study was to evaluate the mental health status of older aged group and the
elderly comprises a much larger proportion of the population than ever before.Among the survey
respondents, majority of the respondents were mentally normal (58.18%). Some were mildly
depressed (22.73%) & the rest were severely depressed (19.09%). From our survey, we found
that dementia was present in 50% of the total respondents. From the observations of our study,
we found that the respondents from the upper class & the upper middle class families were less
depressed than the other families. The female respondents were more prone to depression than the
male respondents.Government policies providing social services to the geriatric population are in
place, but their implementation is not adequate. There is an urgent need to implement national
policies, programs and legislations targeting geriatric mental health and promoting advocacy.
