Yeni
başlayanların, çalışmalarının kalitesi her zaman için bizim
beklentilerimizi karşılamayabilir. Önemli olan bu yönde çaba
sarf edebildiklerini görmek olduğunu da unutmamız gerekir.
Sempozyum düzenleme sürecinde her türlü desteği sağlayan
Akdeniz Üniversitesi Rektörü sayın Prof. Dr. Mustafa Ünal ve
tüm üniversite üst düzey yöneticilerine teşekkür ederiz. Ve
elbette sempozyumumuza katılan tüm meslektaşlarımıza ve
öğrencilerimize de teşekkür ederiz.

Cilicia was always at the first plan with the sea and
seamanship activities during the antiquity. Many of known sea
battles and trade connections did happen at the coast of Cilicia
or at least related to Cilicia in the history of Mediterranean.
Some important discoveries have been carried out on this
subject since 2015. One of them is a great shipyard which is
found in the east of the Rough Cilicia region on the
Mediterranean coast of Turkey, 276 slipways were found on
Dana Island. This island is located 2.300 metres from the
shores of the Silifke District of Mersin Province. On the island,
there are also a great number of different building remains
behind these slipways. Among the surviving structures are at
least three chuches, a bath, more than a hundred cisterns,
various workshops/mils, with the majority being building
groups which couldn't be identified, dated to the 2nd-6th
centuries AD. Masonry tecniques that can be probably dated to
the Iron Age have been seen in some structures whose function
has not been fully understood yet. There are traces which show
multiple uses in building remains, located both in the slipways
and behind the slipways. The surface materials were dated to
the Romen and Eartern Roman period. The information
obtained gives rise to the thought that the structure of the
shipyard here may have been in uninterrupted use from the
Iron Age until the Eastern Roman period. This shipyard will be
compared to the other known examples during the
presentation.

Mehmed’in
gelecektir. Biz bu bildirimizde, bir tanesi harap olarak
günümüze ulaşabilen (Kum Kasrı Hamamı), diğeri de (Aşçılar
Hamamı) arkeolojik kazı sonrası ortaya çıkarılan iki hamamı;
arşiv belgeleri, kazı, vd. çalışmalara dayalı olarak inceleyerek,
bunların; plan, malzeme- teknik, mimari, bezeme vd.
bakımlardan Osmanlı dönemi hamam mimarisi içerisindeki
yerlerini belirlemyee çalışacağız. Mevcut verileren hareketle,
Her iki

The Sand Pavilion Bath and The Cookers Bath in the
Ottoman Imperial Palace in Adrianople
Mustafa Özer/ Mesut Dündar
Istanbul Medeniyet University- Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart
University
The building program of the Imperial Palace (Saray-ı Cedîd-i
Âmire) started in the last years of Murad II’s reign, in what is
today the Sarayiçi Quarter of Edirne to the west of the Tunca
River and eventually became a large complex with extensions
and renovations dateable to almost every era. This palace,
significant portions of which were built during the reign of
Mehmed II (1451-1481), was comprised of nearly a hundred
structures with various functions and was spread over a vast
expanse. The Imperial Palace (Saray- Cedîd-i Âmire), remained
in use for centuries and was witness to many important
historical events (e.g. Mehmed IV’s circumcision feast, the
Ottoman-Russo Wars and the Balkan Wars, etc.). In the closing
decades of the 19th and early 20th centuries, during the 1877- 181
78 Ottoman-Russo War and the 1910-1912 Balkan Wars, the
palace suffered much destruction and many of its buildings
were destroyed. As a result only a few of its original structures
are extant today. Among these are: the Matbah-ı Amire (Royal
Kitchens), Babüssaade (Entrance Gateway), Cihannûma Kasrı
(Eye on the World Pavilion), Kum Kasrı (Sand Pavilion)
Hamamı (Bathhouse), Adalet Kasrı (Justice Pavilion), Fatih
Köprüsü (Sultan Mehmed the Conqueror’s Bridge), Kanuni
Köprüsü (Sultan Süleyman the Lawgiver’s Bridge), Şehabeddin
Paşa Köprüsü (Şehabeddin Paşa’s Bridge), Av Köşkü (Hunting
Lodge), Su Maksemi (Water Depot), Namazgâhlı Çeşme
(Fountain with Open Air Mosque). While some of these
structures are in ruins, others are preserved and are currently
undergoing restoration as part of the ongoing archaeological
excavations of the Palace complex. The Kum Kasrı Bathhouse
is one of the only structures still standing within the Edirne
Palace complex. Kum Kasrı has an adjacent structural
connection to the hamam (bathhouse). However, only remains
of the Kasrı’s foundation exist today. The Palace’s Kum
Meydan (Kum Square) and the second courtyard with Kum
Kasrı Hamamı (Bathhouse) to the northeast was built during
the times of Mehmed II, which was during the middle of the
15th century.
The structure was composed of pitch-faced stone and smooth
cut stone with brick. The hamam is covered with domes and
vaults. Originally, the surface of the inner walls were covered
in plaster and the outer surfaces were covered with cement
later. The hamam, or bathhouse was used for military
purposes during the 1960s. The inner walls of the cold room
and floors were covered with cement mortar. Again, during this
time the warm and hot parts of the hamam were removed. The
hamam consists of the warm and hot sections, the furnace and
the water depot.
One entered the hamam through a door in the center of the
northern side. This door opened to the adjacent Kum Kasrı, not
to the outside. At an unknown date, this previously mentioned
door was closed, and a vertical rectangular door was created 182
on the west side of the building. This door was closed with a
wall in the 2000s.During the excavations, the old door was
opened by removing the wall that was put in its place.
The Kum Kasri Hamamı, like the other structures of the Edirne
Palace, was left dilapidated by war, natural disasters, and
human destruction. With the financial support of the
Presidency of the Turkish Grand National Assembly in 2011-
2012 to restore the site for the future generations, there is a
serious conservation restoration project after the
archaeological excavations of the bathhouse/hamam, its inner
parts and the surrounding area.

Although the works of the past had been important for the
Ottomans, who regarded them as heritage, for a long time, the
first legal regulation on the subject was Âsâr-ı Atîka
Nizamnâmesi, The Regulations of Antiquities, issued in 1869.
The most important code brought by the regulations which
were updated several times was to establish the specifications
of the excavation permits and to outlaw the transfer of the
findings out of the country. Besides, in the regulations were
some codes regulating the conservation of immovable
antiquities. In this study, the state of the Anatolian Seljuq
works in Sivas in the Ottoman Period is introduced through the
archive documents and by tracking the traces of contents of
these documents on the buildings. Also featuring matters in
the regulations, these documents, consisted of correspondence
mainly in the 19th C and the early 20th C, comprise
information about the understanding of antiquities in the last
era of the Ottoman Empire. In the documents, Çifte Minareli
Madrasah, Buriciye Madrasah and the Hospital of Izz ad-Din
Kaykuas are mentioned. The record about restoration of the
Hospital of Izz ad-Din Kaykuas, dated 1779, also documents
that the building’s function was changed. Other records about
the building are on the ceramic inscription of Izz ad-Din
Kaykuas’ tomb in the hospital; it was removed under the
pretext of restoration to be sold and taken out of the country.
In the documents, the names of the bureaucrats who were
involved in the smuggling and who prevented it were also
mentioned. Also in the archive documents were the cover-ups
during the trial and the following investigations. The
documents about the Çifte Minareli Madrasah reveal that the
whole building except the facade was demolished and a 204
Military Junior High School was built inside the iwan. In the
correspondences, what needed to be done to restore the
building was mentioned putting an emphasis on its aesthetic
value. The Buruciye Madrasah was only mentioned by name in
the documents. Another smuggling of antiquities mentioned in
the documents was about the 10 tiles, the original building of
which was unknown. We learn from the correspondences that
Osman Hamdi Bey, the Director of Müze-i Hümayun, today the
Istanbul Archaeological Museum, took a personal interest in
the matter. The same documents also reveal that part of Sivas
Senior High School was turned into a museum. Through the
documents we have researched, regardless of them being about
restoration or smuggling, it is understood that the most
important data revealing the understanding of antiquities in
the last era of the Ottomans come from the archive documents.
It is obvious that Osman Hamdi Bey, who also singed the
discussed documents played the most important part in the
development of the understanding of antiquities.

The Qajar Dynasty, which ruled for 130 years in Iran (1795-
1925) as a Turkish Khanate, is a transitional period for Iran,
both culturally and artically. This initiative started at the
beginning of Feth Ali Shah (1797-1834), an effective
architectural structure in Iran. Among these architectural
structures, houses are one of the remarkable and stylistic
associations. Houses are a proof that there is a close
relationship between individuals' lifestyles and cultural levels,
as well as the parallelism of people with the socio-cultural way
of life. In this declaration, three houses, a group of civil
architectural works belonging to the Qajar Dynasty (1795-
1925) in Tabriz will be introduced. These houses are Emir
Nizam, Alavi, Constitutional (Kuzeh Konâni) houses. The most
important features of the houses are; north and south, the
existence of the balconies of the facades and the creation of the
inner-outer garden arranged in the symmetry of these
balconies, the large and fancy rooms called "tenabi" which
opens to the north front with the front façade, the "pool room"
"Is a depot-cellar section located on the ground floor which is
one of the main architectural elements in the early, middle and
late periods of the Qajar Dynasty, which follows this room and
is usually located on the western front. These restored and
preserved structures remain important in that they continue all 210
these features of the Qajar Dynasty architectural developments
in the period following itself. The plans, architectural and
ornamentation characteristics of the closed relatives and the
outward appearance of the society that are dominant in the
Iranian society will be emphasized and the contributions of the
houses to the house architecture in Iran and their importance
in the period will be emphasized.

The Ottoman Empire has taken the city of Kilis and its
surroundings into her borders at 1516 and applied new
architectural and administrative structuring, which had been
ruled by Memluks before. Then, Canbolad Bey has built a
complex with mevlevihane, next to a mosque, moslems
eminaryand a tomb. The complex has been known as “Tekke”,
“Tekye” or “Canbolad Pasa” in public. It has been recorded as
“Tekye” at the mosque records of (vakfiye) of Canbolad Bey at
1553. It attracts attention with it’s the quality of materials
used, architecture characteristics and architectural decorations
between the similar buildings of the environment. The building
has lots of stone decorations, as much as, tile and wood
carving samples. There are stone decorations used with a fine
workmanship, at minaret, main gate, column heads, and altar.
Especially the decoration style at altar is interesting for the
reflection of regional effects. The tile decorations were mostly
used at outer walls, window pediments and interior window
pediments towards harim. At the tiles, classical ottoman
decoration motives and tranquility of blue-white colored tiles
has been preferred. At the Gaziantep buildings, the usage of
tiles are very rare, however in this building, the classical tile
decorations is interesting. We see the wooden materials at the
window wings, cat way at the dome and muezzin desk. The
muezzin desk at this building has the characteristics of
wooden kalemisi decorations, mostly seen at the Gaziantep
buildings but there is no kalemisi decoration applied. In this
paper, historical, architectural and architectural decoration
features of Kilis Tekke Mosque which is one of the examples of
classical Ottoman architecture built on Anatolian scale will be
discussed. The technique at the decorations and composition
characteristics will be analyzed with materials used and style 227
characteristics will be discussed. The mosque was damaged by
a bomb launched fromSyria in 2016, so it has been closed to
worship. The mosque, which was taken under extensive
restoration by the VGM and planning to open to worship
service in 2018.
