Artist’s Statement

What is an artist’s statement?

An artist’s statement is an artist’s written description of their work, in order to give the viewer a
greater understanding of the work.

You can include:

- Why you like to make art
- Why you chose to make this specific piece
- Why you chose the materials that you did
- What the piece means to you
- What you want people to know when they look at this piece

Here are a few examples of artist’s statements and ways you can start yours:

“I would like to name this work of art ______________________”

“I made this work of art by ______________________________”
“My favorite part about this work of art is ___________________”
“This is what I was thinking when I made this work of art: ______”
This website also has some great suggestions for what to do and what NOT to do for artists’
statements :)

Now try a rough draft of what you think your artist’s statement for this piece of art should be,
then edit and finalize!:

This art project was mainly a school assignment. When asked to make something for art I chose
to make a costume for myself as it was getting closer to halloween at the time. What I chose to
be was a wizard. So I got to work on making my costume as well as the staff. I used a
combination of paper mache and a broom handle with some popsicle sticks and pencils to hold
it all together. With the robes I had found a dark green fabric. I wanted to give it a somewhat
elven or druidic style, with it looking more like the whole thing came from nature. Finally the hat
was treated in a similar fashion to the robes. I had enough fabric so I used it for both the hat and
the robes. Personally I'm happy with the results.
