Essay
Based on our discussion about the concept of democracy, do you think this concept is ideal to our
country?
1. Do we Filipinos really adhere to the true ideals of democracy? What are the things that you
noticed? Cite some events that made you say so.
2. And do the ideals of democracy go against our culture? What are those Filipino values that
you know that made you say so?
3. What type of democracy do we have? Is it substantive or procedural democracy? Explain how
did you come up with that answer by citing some of your observations.

While I was browsing for some facts, there’s this article caught my attention and the title was
really intriguing my mind and it said, Philippine democracy: alive but is it well?. For some
reasons, it hit me because I know for a fact that the title was like a mere fact for me. The process
where the legitimacy of democracy is emphasized where people are free to choose its own
leaders and whatever will be the outcome or result of it, they should abide with it (Purdue, 2007)
and for stating the fact these concept actually happens in Philippines, we are free to choose
whoever leaders the society want but when the results came up, we should stick out with it. It
was the popular support of the government and whoever person that ends up as a leader and
when things get worse it is the people to be blamed for choosing the wrong leader and not
thinking of the outcome.

In Southeast Asia, the latter early 20th century took in several new nations. In order to form their
democracy, most of these countries started to use western nations. Among the recently democrati
zed developing states is the Philippines. In developing its sovereignty as a democracy, you can’t
escape for the fact that the Philippines has been deeply influenced by the western hemisphere.

Do we Filipinos really adhere to the true ideals of democracy? I must say that some of them but
not all of them and I would like to start by these and I beg to disagree on the state about
Alternation in Power, it said that it goes to a saying of the world is round because no knows who
will be the next ruling party or group but not in the Philippines. In our democracy, the people
who will join the government was quite predictable, the ruling party every several year doesn’t
change whatever the surname even middle name of the candidate that year, it would continue and
always be the same every several year, it was common for us Filipinos considering the fact that
every people on the government shares the same blood and surname so it wasn’t a surprise for us,
that’s why I’m disagreeing to that point because it doesn’t happen on our country. Second, the
popular representation and I, as a Filipino, I’m actually agreeing for some reason because public
office is a public trust (Asia-Pacific Human Rights Information Center) thus, the essential
standard of good governance require honesty, responsibility, dignity and competence. It is the
responsibility of the state at all sections of the government to remove bribery and corruption
(Constitute Project Org). Our access to know on issues relating to the public interest shall be
protected to this extent, it somehow happening on our country but the word removing of
corruption, I’m not sure of that because one of the reasons why Philippines is at the developing
countries is because most of the leaders here is sadly the one who lead in corruption.
Does the ideals of democracy go against the culture? I would like to state these question as ‘I
thought democracy had failed Filipinos but it was we who have failed it’ (Medium/Erin Cook). I
must say that during the years, one of the values in Filipinos is the honesty and the capability of
adapting to a certain scenarios in a good way but I noticed that they sometimes abuse the ideals
of democracy which is the reason why we are free to vote our leaders in our country. Some of
them, paid people some cash for the sake of their position in the government and the people just
accept it and vote them ahead, by thinking of that, it was clearly going against the values of a
Filipino. Also, one of the things that I like in the Philippines way back 1900’s is how the
government in Philippines is at peace. But today’s democracy, rallies are everywhere, facing
anger at the violence because of the recently included teenagers killed by police during the reign
of President Rodrigo Duterte, I think these things that give us a lot of freedom for certain things
make people the center of abusing the society. My opinion is that, I would not happen if you just
sat and behave as a kind man and act properly because that was we value in the first place.

In sum, our society in the Philippines is like procedural, that is my opinion. First of all, I know
for a fact that people doesn’t have any equal participation in the process, one of the evidence is
the paying votes, the reason why we are free to vote a leaders on our country is to be comfortable
and fair about everything and have peace on it. But when people started to accept things
especially money from the candidates in exchange of voting them, it was clearly that people
doesn’t care about the pride of our democracy and people don’t have any equal participation on it
because it was biased. Also, the substantive is the equal participation of all groups in society but
for me, it wasn’t happening on today’s democracy because here in Philippines people are divided
by their wealth and how much money yo have in a bank even in pocket. The one who has a lot of
money is the one who has a power to control things.
