Werner Heisenberg considered the limits of how precisely we can measure the properties of an electron
or other microscopic particle. He determined that dicre is a fundamental limit to how closely we can
measure both position and momentum. The more accurately we measure the momentum of a particle,
the less accurately we can determine its position. The converse is also true. This is summed up in what
we now call the Heisenberg uncertainty principle.

The French physicist Louis de Broglie in 1924 postulated that matter, like radiation should a dual behaviour.
He proposed the following relationship between the wavelength of a matenal particle, its linear
momentum p and planck constant h.

h h
p mv

The de Broglie relation implies that the wavelength of a particle should decrease as its velocity increases.
It also implies that for a given velocity heavier particles should have shorter wavelength.
The waves associated with particles in motion are called matter waves or de Broglie waves. These waves
differ from the electromagnetic waves as they
(i) have lower velocities
(ii) have no electrical and magnetic fields and
(iii) are not emitted by the particle under consideration

The experimental confirmation of the de Broglies relation was obtained when Davisson and Germer,
in 1927, observed that a beam of electrons is diffracted by a nickel crystal. As diffraction a charactensfcc
property of waves, hence the beam of electron behaves as a wave, as proposed by de brogue.

Partial Marks : +1 For darkening a bubble corresponding to each correct option, Provided NO incorrect
option is darkened.
For example, if (A), (C) and (D) are all the correct options for a question, darkening all these three will
result in +4 marks; darkening only (A) and (D) will result in +2 marks; and darkening (A) and (B) will
result in –2 marks, as a wrong option is also darkened.

SECTION-i (iii) : Paragraph Type (Maximum Marks: 12)
This section contains 2 paragraphs each describing theory, experiment, data etc. Four questions related
to two paragraphs and two queston each paragraph .
Each question has FOUR options (A), (B), (C) and (D). ONLY ONE of these four options is correct.
For each question, darken the bubble corresponding to the correct option in the ORS.
For each question, marks will be awarded in one of the following categories :
Full Marks : +3 If only the bubble corresponding to the correct answer is darkened.
Zero Marks : 0 In all other cases.
Paragraph for Question no. 15 and 16
Consider two quadratic trinomials f(x) = x2 –2ax + a2 –1 and g(x) = (4b –b2 –5)x2 – (2b –1)x +3b,
where a, b R
15. The value of a for which both roots of the equation f(x) = 0 are greater than –2 but less than 4, lie
in the interval
(A) – < a < –3 (B) –2 < a < 0 (C) –1< a < 3 (D) 5 < a <
16. If '1' lies between the roots of g(x) = 0, then number of integral values of b is equal to
(A) 1 (B) 2 (C) 3 (D) 4

D. Marking scheme :
12. For each question in Section-I (i), you will be awarded 3 marks if you darken the bubble corresponding to the correct
answer and zero mark if no bubbles are darkened. In all other cases minus one (–1) mark will be awarded.
13. For each question in Section-I (ii), you will be awarded 4 marks if you darken the bubble corresponding to the correct
answer and zero mark if no bubbles are darkened. In all other cases minus two (–2) mark will be awarded.
Partial Marks : +1 For darkening a bubble corresponding to each correct option, Provided NO incorrect

as a wrong option is also darkened.
14. For each question in Section-I(iii), you will be awarded 3 marks if you darken all the bubble(s) corresponding to
only the correct answer(s) and zero mark if no bubbles are darkened. No negative marks will be awarded for incorrect
answers in this section.
15. Take g = 10 m/s2 unless otherwise stated.
