To reduce deviations in intonation, both scordatura soloists play non vibrato throughout, and are careful not to adjust stopped nctes to the rest of orchestra. The two scordatura instruments are notated in the score as they sound, In the individual parts, they are notated transposed, as they are played Flutes, Oboes, Clarinets, Bassoon ‘The oceasioal ferences in intonation (wiérolntervas) ae mitked by arrows polating up-ot downwards respectively and can be produced either with the embouchure or by fingering. The intonation is not exzet and represents a maximun deviation of a quarter-tone. Ocarinas These are to be played by the obvist (soprano ocarine ia C), by both clarinettists (soprano carina in high F and alto ocarina in G) and by the bassoonist (soprano ocarine in C). ‘Tne soprano ocerina C is readily available on the market. The alto ocarina in G is less common, but is available from the music publishers Schott Musik International, Mainz, Tne ocarines play simple melodies in the 2nd and 4th movements. The intonation can vary. In forte the intonation is sharper. The sharp pitch should not be corrected, the playing should remain forte, The alto ocatina in G should be pleyed standing up by the clarinettst, as it is softer than he other instruments, Hors ‘The 2nd and 3rd movements are to be played throughout in the menner of a natural horn. The correct valve positions are marked in the score (or parts respectively). I both these ‘movements the intonation should not be corrected with the right hand. ‘The arrows notated represent the deviations in pitch. The matural 3rd (harmonics 5 and 20) has no arrow as this laterval is only slightly flat. ‘The harmonics 7, 11, 13 and 14 are indicated. ‘Trumpet and Trombone In addition to the normal metal and cardboard mutes, harmon and cup mutes are needed, The trombone plays natural harmonics on several occasions: the intonation is always indicated. Percussion Both swance whistles must have a good strong tone, Instrumen's from the english firm ACME can be recommerded. Double Bass A four-stringed bass is preferable (the B-string is not used). ‘The bars and divisions between bar-line do not indicate accentuation, but serve to enable synchronization of the parts and as orientation.
