A Fire By Lee Wenxi

"Rrinnggg!"the school bell rang shrilly to signal the end of school. Children dashed
out of their classrooms and headed for the school gate. Jane jostled through the
buzzing crowd and headed for home immediately. It was a scorching afternoon and
the sun shone brightly in the azure blue sky.

As Jane was walking back home, she thought to herself, "What shall I eat for
lunch? Maybe chicken rice, no, what about instant noodles? That sounds like a great
idea!" When she reached her block, a strange smell hit her like a twenty-pound
sledge hammer. "What is that smell? Is there a fire?" she questioned herself. She
decided to put away her thoughts and continued her way home.

"Ding!" the lift arrived at Jane's floor. Jane walked to her house. Suddenly, she saw
a fire at her neighbour, Keith's house. She cupped her hands over her mouth in
shock. "Help! Help! There is a fire here!" she screamed. Unfortunately, no one heard
her. She peeped through the window and to her horror, she saw her neighbour,
Keith, playing with lighted matchstick! Beads of sweat trickled down her cheek as
she did not know what to do.

Jane fished out her mobile phone and punched in the numbers’995’ for the fire
brigade. After that, she saw that a crowd had gathered below her flat. Jane went
back home and took a pail of water and poured it into Keith’s unit. However, it was
no use as the fire got bigger and bigger. Jane had no choice but to wait patiently for
the firemen to come.

After what seemed like an eternity, the firemen finally arrived. Some of the firemen
saved Jane and Keith, while some of the firemen put out the fire. Eventually, they
managed to put out the fire. Jane heaved a sigh of relief.

Keith’s parents chided Keith for playing with matchsticks. Keith hung his head low
and apologised to them. On the other hand, Jane’s parents and the firemen praised
her for her quick-thinking and bought her an ice-cream. From that day onwards,
Keith promised not to play with matchsticks ever again, while Jane learned to be
vigilant at all times.
