 Nutrition – study of food in relation to health


 Food – any substance, when ingested / eaten, that nourishes the body
 Nutrient – chemical component needed by the body to provide energy to build and repair tissues
and to regulate life process
 Digestion – mechanical / chemical breakdown of food into smaller components
 Absorption – process where the nutrients from foods are absorb by the body into the
bloodstreams
 Metabolism – chemical process of transforming foods into other substance to sustain life
 Enzymes – an organic catalyst that are protein in nature and are produced by living cells
 Nutritional Status – condition of the body resulting from the utilization of essential nutrients
 Calorie – fuel potential in food
o 1 Cal = Heat Amount to Raise 1 L of water 1 degree Celsius
 Malnutrition – condition of the body resulting from lack of 1 / more essential nutrients / due to
excessive nutrient supply
