THE REAL SWEENEY

In 1919, in London, twelve police officers got together to form what is now called The Flying
Squad. They decided that, instead of investigating crimes after they had happened, they would

stop the criminals while they were committing them. 1_____ There were 40 officers the
following year and more the year after. They became the first police force to use cars and they
got their name because they were able to move quickly round London.

In 1956, they made 1,000 arrests in a year! From 1978 until 1981, they changed their name to the
Central Robbery Squad but then went back to being the Flying Squad, because it was a much more

popular name with police officers and the public. 2_____ In the 1970s there was a popular TV series
about the Flying Squad. The name of the series was The Sweeney. It was such a popular show that
many people still call the real Flying Squad ‘The Sweeney’.

Although the characters and events shown in the TV series weren’t true, the way the police worked on
TV was very similar to how they work in real life. As they get information about crimes before they

happen, they are often at the scene when the crime is being committed. 3_____ The criminals are
often carrying guns and are ready to fight back.

One of the Squad’s most famous successes came in the year 2000. A huge diamond, the Millennium
Star, worth about £200 million, was in London at the Millennium Dome. The police heard that a gang of
robbers planned to steal the diamond and escape along the River Thames by boat. When the robbers
arrived, two hundred police officers were waiting for them. Some were hiding, others were dressed as

cleaners and other workers. 4_____ The police had already moved the diamond and put a glass copy in
its place. Four men broke into the Dome carrying guns. They were soon arrested and another man was
stopped on the river. Amazingly, no-one was hurt. The men were sentenced to between 4 and 18 years in
prison.

Some people think it’s wrong that the Flying Squad have close contacts with criminals, but they say
that this is the only way they can get information on what crimes are going to be committed. As one
officer said: “If we didn’t get information from criminals, where would we get it from?”
A Many people, though, call them something completely different.

B This way of working is obviously more dangerous than normal police work.

C The Squad soon increased in size.

D This was one of their first big arrests.

E They weren’t always so successful.

F Twenty more were in boats on the river.

Match statements 1–7 to town descriptions A–E. There are two extra statements that you do not
need.

A TALE OF FIVE CITIES

HOW THE END OF OLD INDUSTRIES DOESN’T NEED TO BE A DISASTER

Some towns and cities in Britain have never recovered from the end of the industrial revolution. Others
are doing surprisingly well. Here are a few success stories…

A
SWINDON
Swindon was a small town until 1848 when canals and railways brought jobs to the area. The biggest
employer was the railway, and in the early 20th century over 14,000 people worked building trains and
tracks. When the factories closed down in the 1950s and 1960s the city decided to attract new industries. It
has done this very well and now Swindon is one of the richest towns in England and home to Honda,
Motorola and many other big companies. Swindon also switched off its speed cameras in 2009, the first
town in Britain to do this.
B
DARLINGTON
Darlington is a medium-sized town in the north-east of Britain. It is best known as the place where, in
1825, the first ever passenger train journey finished. Railway engineering was its main industry until
the middle of the 20th century. Now there is little industry in the town but it has become a major
shopping centre for the area and, as it is the closest town to the beautiful North Yorkshire moors, it also
has a small tourist industry.
C
NORTHAMPTON
Northampton became an important town in the 19th century when the canals and railways linked it to
London and Birmingham. It then became the centre of the country’s shoe industry until the middle of
the last century when the industry became smaller. In 1968 it became a ‘new town,’ meaning that lots
of families moved to Northampton when their homes in London were destroyed. It is now a commuter
town. Many people who work in London or Birmingham live here because it is less than an hour to
both cities by train and house prices are much lower.
D
HUDDERSFIELD
Huddersfield is well-known as the birthplace of the Luddite movement in the early days of the
Industrial Revolution. The Luddites hated change and destroyed factories in many industrial centres.
Huddersfield, though, became an important industrial town. It still is important, and, as well as
traditional industries, it has technology, electronics and chemical factories. The biggest employer,
however, is the local university which has a very good reputation.
E
NEWPORT
Newport, in South Wales, was a major industrial area in the 19th century. It was so important that, in
the 1850s, it was bigger even than Cardiff, the Welsh capital. Newer industries replaced the old ones,
and when these finished, even more modern technology took over. The area is also famous for its
music and, in the 1990s, some people called it ‘the Seattle of Britain’ because both Newport and the
city of Seattle in the USA were home to many indie rock bands at that time.

1 The town is much smaller than it used to be.

2 Many people who live there work somewhere else.

3 A historical event took place in this town.

4 The town has more money than most towns in Britain.

5 The town has been compared to a different city in another country.

6 The town is an expensive place to live.

7 The town is an important educational centre.

I. Reading.
Read the article about a famous journalist. Choose the correct answers.

THE PAUL FOOT AWARD

Paul Foot was a famous British journalist. He was born in 1937 to a famous family. Both his
grandfather and uncle were politicians. He went to a public school which he hated, and studied at
Oxford where he wrote articles for a student newspaper.
At the time he was studying law and, although he never worked as a lawyer, he was always
interested in the subject. In later years, he used his knowledge of the law to help people who were sent
to prison unfairly. In 1961, after finishing his studies, he went to work as a journalist in Glasgow,
Scotland. This was his first full-time job and, while there, he met workers from local factories and
talked to them about their lives and jobs. From then on, he fought for workers’ rights against big
businesses and the government.
In 1967, Paul Foot started working full-time for the twice-monthly publication, Private Eye. This
is a well-known newspaper in Britain which publishes stories other newspapers are too scared to
print. Paul Foot was paid much less for this work than for his work with normal, daily papers, but he
didn’t mind because he was given much more freedom to write what he wanted. He enjoyed the
people he worked with and found out that he and the owner had both been to similar schools and had
similar, unhappy, childhoods. He left Private Eye twice to work on different publications but, both
times, he returned again to the paper he always loved best.
Paul Foot won several awards. He was journalist of the year in 1972 and 1989 and he worked hard
on stories which no-one else was interested in. He died in 2004, but his memory lives on. In 2005,
Private Eye and another newspaper, The Guardian, started up the Paul Foot Award for journalism. Six
British journalists whose work over the year has been important are chosen for the final. Five of them
receive a prize of ₤1,000 and the overall winner gets ₤5,000.
The winners aren’t always well-known or working for national newspapers. Although the first two
winners were from The Daily Mail and The Sunday Telegraph, the third, in 2007, was a journalist on
the Doncaster Free Press newspaper, a small weekly newspaper from a town in the north of England.
That was for her articles on a local education organisation which cost millions of pounds but didn’t
provide a good service for local students. Her work was typical of what Paul Foot thought of as
a ‘real’ journalist. She shared a small office and was only on a part-time contract, but by meeting
people and asking the right questions, she slowly managed to put a story together that shocked
everyone who read it.
These days, when newspapers are full of celebrity gossip, fashion tips and ‘news’ about the latest
reality or talent show, the Paul Foot Award helps us to remember what journalism should be about.
Stories that matter, stories that can change the world.
1 Paul Foot studied law at university but he
a wasn’t interested in the subject.

c chose a different career.
d didn’t finish his studies.

TRUE STORIES
Last month, we asked you for mistakes you made at school or work and what
you learned from them. Here is this month’s winning article.
Our school is very good at organising after-school activities. Last year I went to two clubs, the music
club and the drama club. It was my first year in the music club, which I had for an hour on Mondays
and Wednesdays, and my second year in the drama club, which was an hour and a half on Tuesdays and

Thursdays. 1_____ It didn’t matter because there wasn’t much school work to do.

In October, they told us about the end of year school play. 2_____ I was very excited when I found out
that I was going to play one of the most important parts. Then, in November, the music teacher asked me
to play the piano in the end of year concert. I was surprised because my piano playing isn’t very good. He
wanted everyone to be in it, though, good and bad.

Everything was fine before Christmas because I did a lot of school work at the weekend. 3______
Then, in January, I went to a friend’s birthday party and met a girl called Heather. We started talking
and I asked her out. After that, I didn’t have any free Fridays or Saturdays because I was with Heather.
I was still OK, though. I stopped watching TV and only switched on my computer once a week.

That was my life until April but then everything started happening at once. The drama teacher wanted
me to come to an extra practice on Fridays, the music teacher gave me lots of tunes to practise at home
over the weekend and Heather wanted to meet up for walks on Sundays because the weather was
getting nicer. In addition, our teachers started talking more and more about the end of year exams. We
got more homework and tests every week to see how much we could remember. I usually have a good
memory but I was trying to memorise my words in the play as well. My test marks were really bad and

my parents were worried so they told me I should stop seeing Heather for a while. 4______

In the end, Heather left me, I failed my exams and the music teacher said that I wasn’t good enough to
be in the concert. The play went well, though, although I nearly fell asleep in the middle of it.
5______ Not to try to do so many things at one time!

Ian Hodge, aged 17

A I didn’t want to do that so I was staying up later and later to get all my work done.

B I didn’t expect her to say that.
