Riddle on December 29, 2012 at 12:36 pm

@VG

The 'NoInternetOpenWith' value works on XP, Vista, and 7, but

is there one that works to get rid of this similar window on
Windows 8 Open with dialog, so you don't have to click More
options?

i.imgur.com/gx1YA.png

VG on December 29, 2012 at 7:54 pm

^^ I'm getting the same behavior in Windows 8 as it was in

Windows 7 and previous versions. When the open with box is
opened, it shows installed programs list and then clicking on
more options, browse dialog box is opened to select other
program. The same thing happens in previous Windows
versions.

vikas on January 14, 2013 at 2:52 pm

good..... but why doesn't the date get displayed on the

comments in your this page??

Jack P. Watson on January 23, 2013 at 3:02 am

Mr. Gupta

I am told that the LNK extension does not appear even when
Windows is set to show file extensions, because it is controlled
by a value in the Windows Registry that is set by default to
always hide the extensions of shortcuts.

I used to have WindowsXP Explorer Shotcuts shown with .lnk

extensions and would like this restored.

https://www.askvg.com/collection-of-registry-tweaks-for-windows-7/ 6/21
25/12/2020 Collection of Best Registry Tweaks to Speed Up Your Windows - AskVG

Can you provide a registry fix which would do this? I am

conversant with RegEdit.

Thank you

cuttysark55

Riddle on January 23, 2013 at 8:16 am

@ Jack P. Watson

Go to 'HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\lnkfile' using Regedit, and then

delete the 'NeverShowExt' string value.
Now log off then log back on or just restart your computer
and the .lnk extension should now be shown.

VG on January 23, 2013 at 6:43 pm

@Jack P. Watson
Riddle is right. "NeverShowExt" string is used by Windows to
hide a few system filetype extensions. You can search for
NeverShowExt in Registry and delete it from a few other
places as well. Make sure to take a backup of the keys first.

Jack P. Watson on January 25, 2013 at 5:11 am

Gentlemen :

Thank you Riddle for the information. It worked perfectly.

Also thank you Vishal for the verification and additional
information. I deleted all of the "NeverShowExt" entries from
the Registry and walla - done.

I wanted to have a .lnk extension for Shortcuts to allow me to

distinguish them from the Target of the shortcut. A
CommonDialog program I am writing needs this information.

Great site

sebaz_ri on May 18, 2013 at 7:14 am

Vishal, the NoLowDiskSpaceChecks could be used as well in

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curren

HKEY_CURRENT_USER?

Thanks for sharing this tweak that cuts across most Windows
OS! I used it on a freshly installed Win XP and it got rid of the
SVCHOST.EXE which used up a lot of CPU. I will not hesitate to
install this on Vista, Win 7 or 8.

Zzzzzzzz on January 14, 2014 at 10:10 pm

Jacob on January 25, 2014 at 5:14 am

This is great. These registry tweaks really improved the

responsiveness of my Windows 8 laptop. I was just wondering
if someone could post registry settings to restore these
settings to default. Namely, the menu speed setting caused
some problems on my machine.

Moved to Win 8.1 it seemed as if I would have to buy an OEM
version of my very expensive software to run on this damn
system. (particularly since I'm on a fixed income)
Computer is smoother and faster than when I first bought it!

Russ Allen on March 27, 2014 at 2:52 am

I need to know if I down load something for Windows 8 or 8.1

will it work with Windows 7 Ultimate ?
What is gpedit.msc used and how can it help me run my
computer better?

VG on March 27, 2014 at 11:38 pm

^^ If a software was developed only for Windows 8/8.1, it'll

not work in Windows 7. Most of the software work in
Windows 7 and Windows 8/8.1.

gpedit.msc is file name of Group Policy Editor which is used to

enable/disable features in Windows.

Sally on April 15, 2014 at 11:38 pm

Never used anything like this before, but came across this
page as my laptop has been really slow lately. To be honest
thought it was maybe a scam or wouldnt work, sceptic that I
am, but I have proven wrong, its great, I would say that my
laptop is more or less back to the speed it was when I bought
it.

Really a great help, thanks

This tweak compilation actually messed up my windows 8 PC

and made it slower. Readers Beware.

Mischel on September 2, 2014 at 12:00 pm

@DisgruntledReader
You are mad. Those tweaks are harmless and will never harm
any computer. I am using the registry script since many years
in all my computers without any problem. In fact I have tried
them in my office PCs. These tweaks really make Windows
faster.

phiphiphi on October 20, 2014 at 2:09 pm

I tried this (just for kicks, really) on an already snappy 8th gen
Dell XPS13. I guess the perceived increase in speed is more
apparent on older computers, as I can't say that this modern
laptop feels any 'snappier'. However, I REALLY like the ability
to move folders/files to different locations via the Context
menu (which this tweak facilitates). That alone provides some
snappiness in terms of file/folder handling, so KUDOS to the
author.
