Lesson Plan in

Chemical Periodicity: Atomic Size

I. Lesson Objectives
Within the 60-minute period, the students should have been able to:
1. explain why periodic trends occur.
2. make predictions about the relative properties of elements using the periodic table
as a model.
3. predict the trends in atomic radius on the Periodic Table.
II. Subject Matter
Chemical Periodicity – Atomic Size
III. Materials and References
*Visual Aid (Laptop and Projector)
* Rope for Atomic Tug of War
* Periodic Table
* Chemistry Textbook : Chemistry, the Molecular Nature of Matter and Change, pp. 336-340
IV. Integration
*Values (Teamwork and Patience)
* ICT
V. Procedure
A. Motivation
Let the learners play Tug of War.
B. Lesson Proper
Discuss with students chemical periodicity and atomic size.
C. Enrichment Activities
Group students (depending on class size) for drills on atomic size.
D. Essential Questions
1. What are periodic trends?
2. What is the definition of atomic size?
3. How is atomic size related to the structure of atoms?
4. How does understanding periodic trends like atomic size allow us to predict properties
of different elements? What properties can be predicted by understanding trends?
VI. Generalization
Understanding the periodic trends such as atomic size allows us to make predictions about the
properties of individual elements based on their position on the periodic table.

VII. Evaluation
Flash short quiz via projector
VIII. Assignment (with emphasis on Multiple Intelligences)
Let students choose from the following activities to perform:
1. Compose a song containing concepts on chemical periodicity particularly atomic size.
2. Create your OWN problem about atomic size and pose possible solutions.
3. Draw any images that represent trends on atomic size.
