GUIDELINES TO STUDY THE SUBJECT

Regulation: R11

FACULTY DETAILS:
Name of the Faculty:: Y.Vijaya Kumar
Designation :Professor
Department::Mechanical Engineering
Guidelines for Preparing the Course:

Course Description:
In the modern competitive Industrial environment application of Production Planning control
techniques are vital to avoid the conventional concept of trial and error methods in manufacturing a
quality product at competitive price. The types of production and the scientific methods of forecasting
both qualitative and quantitative are to be analysed for the survival of the Industry. Another
important aspect of Production Management is to assess the inventory requirements in order to
avoid blockage of funds in the form of material stocks and to avoid stoppage of production due to
non availability of required materials. To achieve this target the latest technologies like MRP (Material
Resource Planning),EPR,JIT are required to be analysed and implemented. In the process of product
completion it is necessary to develop schedules for men and machinery to avoid any idle time. The
other techniques like Line of Balancing and Line Balancing, to constantly review the progress of work
and identification of excess load on a particular machine and this needs to be regulated to have equal
load. When once the product is completed the method of despatching the finished products to the
dealer or customer needs to be regulated. All these topics are need to be studied for success full
running of Industry.

Course Objectives:
1. Study of objectives of Production planning and control and their functions in a given
organisation. Study of different types of productions and their advantages over other.
2. Study of scientific methods of forecasting of the demand of a product. Quantitative and
qualitative methods.
3. Explanation of the need of Inventory Management in a production oriented industry.
Evaluation of inventory holding cost and their implications ie holding excess or short .
4. Selective inventory Management techniques and their applications. Study of various
methods of ordering systems based on time and quantity and evaluation of each system
5. Study of the latest techniques like MRP and JIT inventory and their importance in the
industry
6. Examine the Technique of Line of Balancing to monitor the progress of scheduled
productions and identification of bottle necks and to take corrective action. Solve the
given problems.
7. Analysis of preparing bill of materials and studies the procedure of routing and
examines the preparation of route sheets.
8. Examine the various methods of scheduling both for men and machinery and
preparation of job schedules and machine schedules.

9. Examine the method of preparation of Line Balancing to identify the lean machine
timings and load them effectively. Study of Aggregate Planning methods and working
out problems
10. Study the procedure of despatch of products . Types of follow up action. Computer
applications in the area of PPC

Learning Outcomes:

After completion of this subject the student will be exposed to the different approaches to be made
for successful organising an industry in the present competitive environment. The scientific analysis of
demand forecast will be helpful in assessing the demand of a given product. Scheduling of men,
machinery and facilities will give an idea to organise scientific plant layout of facilities to achieve
optimisation. Another area is inventory Management which is a back bone to run the industry in a
successful way. The need of procuring right material at right time in right quantities at right prices is
very essential to keep the product cost at low and competitive levels. The latest technologies like
MRP, JIT, Line of Balancing and Line Balancing can be implemented in manufacturing a product or
service. By completing this subject the student will be able to understand various intricacies involved
in successful running of an industry and solutions thereof.
