CLASS 5 LESSON 5
AIR AND WATER PART 1
I. Fill in the blanks
1. The atmosphere is held around the earth by gravity.
2. Neon gas is used in electric lights.
3. The amount of water vapour present in the air is called humidity.
4. The carbon dioxide gas turns the limewater milky.
II. Answer the following.
1. Name the major components of air.
Ans. Air contains 21% Oxygen, 78 % Nitrogen and traces of other gases like
Carbon dioxide, Argon, Hydrogen, Ozone, Helium, Neon, Water vapours etc.
2. List out the properties of air.
Ans. a) Air has weight.
b) Air occupies space.
c) Air exerts pressure.
3. State the significance of air pressure.
Ans. Air pressure helps to sip juices, to fill ink in the fountain pen, to fill
medicine in a dropper or syringe etc.
4. How does the air pressure helps in sipping the juice?
Ans. While sipping the straw, the air from it is forced out and the
pressure inside is reduced. The outside pressure forces the juice into the straw.
5. Show with the help of an experiment that air is a matter.
Ans. Air is a matter. Matter is anything which occupies space and has weight.
If we inflate a balloon its size increases, it shows that air occupies space. Air
has also weight, with the help of an experiment we can prove it.
 Take 2 balloons inflate it equally.
 Tie the balloons to the ends of a stick.
 Tie a string to the middle of the stick and make sure the balloons are
balanced.
 Take a needle and prick one of the balloons near its neck. The air
escapes from this balloon and the other balloon slowly brings the scale
down at its end. This shows that the balloon with air in it is
heavier.(Copy the diagram from the text)
