Geo-reference an image with the help of

Rectified image by using ILWIS
INTRODUCTION:

Geo-referencing is a process of establishing a mathematical relation ship between the

image coordinate system (Pixel coordinate System) to the real world spatial coordinate
system. This spatial coordinate system may be either geographic or a projective coordinate
system. In geographic coordinate system the out image pixels shows latitude and longitude
and in projective system they shows easting and northing of the corresponding ground point.

In the ILWIS software terminology the input image (to be rectified image) is called as
“Slave image” and the image which is used as reference for rectification is called as “Master
image”.

In this process of the image to image Georeference the inherent geometric errors in
the slave image still exists after geo-referencing.

PROCEDURE:

1. StartAll programsILWISILWIS
2. ILWIS window will appear in that navigate the destination folder in Navigator

3. Click on open map Icon Open Object DBXBrowse for the Slave
ImageOK Display Option-Raster Map DBX opensOK Then we will find
the slave image in a new display window observe the red circle in the window
which shows that the image has no Georeference.

4. Slave image window Main menu barFileCreateGeoReference…

5. Then Create Georeference DBX opensGive a name for Georeference(EX:

hyd_goog) write description(Ex: hyd-goog wrt ortho_rsi216_wgs84) select radio
button against GeoRef Tiepoints select the coordinate system of the rectified
image by using down drop arrow check the box of Sub-Pixel precisionOk

6. We will found an Editor of Tie points appears at the bottom of slave image.

7. Select the transformation as Affine from the down drop arrow below the Main menu

bar
8. Before proceeding to the measuring the tie points we have to pen master image by
using open map icon and place the slave image and master image windows side by
side to view simultaneously.

9. Now zoom to the any sharp feature in the both imagesplace the tie point first on the
slave image by using the pointer Add a Tie Point DBX open (which shows
only row and column value of input pixel of slave image)Go to master
imageclick on the same point by using the pointer (now we will found the
values against Lat, Lon in Add Tie Point DBX filled)OK

10. Measure at least minimum 4 Tie Points in the Both Images.

11. After measuring the 3 Tie points the software can able to predict the values of the
rows and columns, large error tie points will appear in yellow and correct ones are
appear in green.

12. Make sure that the values in DRow, DCol and the value of sigma are less than one
before exit editor.
13. Exit the editor by FileExit Editor or by click on the Exit Editor icon
14. Now we will found that the slave image is Georeferenced to the coordinate system of
the master image.
