COMPANY NAME AND ADDRESS

(Insert the name and address of the company you are writing to)

Dear Sir/Madam (wherever possible, find out who you should send your letter to; this
attention to detail will go a long way).

Para one: Open with an arresting sentence to explain why you are looking for a new job. For
example: I would like to be considered for the position of Sales Manager. If you are applying
for an advertised position, say where you saw the advert, …in response to the vacancy
advertised on Jobsite. If someone referred you to your contact, mention his or her name in
this section.

Para two: As you will note from my enclosed CV… Why should an employer be interested in
hiring you? Briefly describe the professional and academic qualifications you have that are
relevant to the position. Mention your career progression, particularly if you’ve been in your
current role for more than five years.

Para three: Emphasise what you can do for the company, not the other way round. Outline
a relevant career goal (are you currently studying for any professional qualifications in your
spare time?), incorporate your research and expand on the most relevant points of your CV.

Para four: Do you have an interesting hobby or extracurricular activity? Tell them about it
here. Make sure your enthusiasm comes across, but don’t go over the top or make
exaggerated claims.

Final para: At the end of the letter ask for the reader to give you a call to go through
anything they need to know. As always, keep it positive and polite. Try something like: I
would be delighted to further discuss my skills and experience, as well as what I believe I
could bring to this role. If you have any questions or queries, please do not hesitate to call
me on (include your telephone number). Make sure that you sign off on a confident note.

Yours sincerely,
