3. Using Unity’s Default Network Manager with a little hack. See below
Below I will show you how to use Unity’s default network manager to create a wireless hotspot with
Android devices support, tested in 64-bit Ubuntu 1404 with Nexus 4 and Sumsung Galaxy ace3.
1. Disable WIFI and plug in an internet cable to your laptop so that your Ubuntu is connect to a wired
internet and wireless is disabled.
2. Go to Network Icon on top panel -> Edit Connections …, then click the Add button in the pop-up
window.

to get the desired text file you should give the same names for SSID and connection name
It Will definitely works
I’ve got the same problem even though I used the same name for SSID and
connection name
How did you fix that!!! I am still getting a blank gedit file named wifi-hotspot. please help
me out
you are getting Blank b/c you used the wifi-hostpot as it is. You must use the name of
the wifi you used to create at the begining.
sudo gedit /etc/NetworkManager/system-connections/your wifi name
Hello,Lafon
It was my mistake too. I know I am too late but it might help for others.
“gksu gedit /etc/NetworkManager/system-connections/…..”
The command must be “sudo gedit /etc/NetworkManager/system-connections/”the name
of the wifi you created on the previous step”
save and exit. Bear in mind you should have to disable the wifi when you create it. Finally
Enable it.
Hi!
Looked like the solution to my problem, but ap-hotspots tells me my driver/modem doesn’t
support AP mode. :-( Thanks for the description anyhow.
But now my WIFI lan doesn’t work anymore, although I reinstalled the former (standard for
14.04) version of hostapd.
Any hints?

Is there any possibility to activate this Wifi Hotspot from the begining?…because, for me, is a
little tiresome to re-activate the Wifi connection everytime I start the system.
using the default network manager there is a problem that is in the phone it says so internet
access
Problem: every time mobile connects to the hotspot wifi, automatically disconnects after not
more than a minute, but galaxy young is connected continiously (android 2.3.6), in the same
network
tried solution:
1.) changed the wifi freq band to 2.4ghz – same problem persists
please reply
Hi.
Thank you very much for the solution. It really works. It solved the problem I was facing.

i dont know why but i can connect to internet only for 2-3 minutes. what could be the problem
you think?
Mine is Ubuntu laptop which has admin protected and password can’t be shared. So i dont have
the password to login to my network where the ap os stored. Do you have any other way to
create a hotspot.
Regards,
Manish.
When i change to “ap” in file the Connection name is disappearing ?? and also keep on showing
connecting when i use “hidden network option” and Create a connection with same name
Check this bug report comment (in my case, a new connection was being created with
mode=infrastructure when setting mode=ap on the already created connection):

I got things working, with the last command ( nmcli con up id Hotspot ). (Seems that I already
had the rest of the tools/packages in place, so you might want to proceed from the
beginning.)
Got it!

I did all the steps but the network does not show on my android
I have xperia p with jellybeans
can you help me please
and iwant to know how to see how many device and it’s name, that are currently connected to
our shared wifi network , and how to manage who can access this shared connection?
You should replace wifi-hotspot with the connection name you created in step 4 (see the
pic. in that step).
I am also having the same problem. the file i open via gedit turns out to be empty. but
when i replace gedit in the command with nano, i can see the file contents. there i change
the mode but i have no idea how to save it now. can you please help me.
For nano editor, press Ctrl+X and type y to save changes and finally press Enter to
exit.
I could create hotspot but the problem was with security tab. Whenever I tried to select some
security I could not save the respective option and it becomes an open network. Please tell me
how to add security in another way. I even tried to add that in that configuration file but still in
vain.

I could create the hotspot and my android/iphone gets connected successfully but I cannot
connect to Internet with this wi-fi connections. I am not able to understand, what am I missing in
this setup.
Instead of going to Edit connections, click on Create New Wi-Fi Network, setup the userid
and password, and then use “gksu gedit /etc/NetworkManager/system-connections/(wifi-
hotspot name)”in the terminal. It will work.
am having a competely blank gedit file even after changing the ‘wifi-hotspot’ to the name I gave
to the connection.
Is there any way to disable growl popup notification from ap-hotspot in Ubuntu (while starting
and stopping)
Hy
I changed the following command gksu gedit /etc/NetworkManager/system-connections/wifi-
hotspot,
by this: sudo gedit /etc/NetworkManager/system-connections/Yassin_ubuntu
And the file is opened, but it is empty.
WHAT IS THE PROBLEME??
You may go to Computer -> etc ->NetworkManager ->system-connections folder in your file
browser and check out the exact file name
I was able to get it to work with all three methods, but once I activate the VPN, none of the
devices connected to the hotspot are able to access the Internet. The VPN works on the system
hosting the Wi-Fi hotspot, and the connection remains on the devices connected to it, but no
data downloads on them.
Thanks again!

Now press Ctrl+Alt+T on keyboard to open terminal. When it opens, paste the commands
below and hit enter to edit the configuration file:
When the file opens, find out the line mode=infrastructure and change it to mode=ap. Finally
save the file.
Linux Mint Rebecca (17.1) it is simpler still. Bring up the Network Manager from the status bar
icon, click the ‘Create a Wireless Hotspot’ Button, configure it and off you go. Note your normal
WiFi network is disconnected while the hotspot is active so you have to have a wired connection
for this to be useful.
To reconnect to your WiFi network after disabling the hotspot click on Connect to a Hidden
Network button in the Network Manager Select your WiFi network connection from the
Connection drop down list and hit the Connect button and you should be restored to normal.
Thanx a lot!
Your steps are very to understand and works wonderfully.
Hi Ji m,
I want to assign some specific IP to the hotspot say 10.10.0.1 but by default its picking
10.42.0.1. Can you please tell where to change such that networkmanager picks the desired IP

Hi,
It didn’t worked for me. After modifying the connection file for mode=ap, when I try to connect
(open the connection from ubuntu) it stays connected to nothing after trying to do so for a
while…
This didn’t work on my ubuntu 14.04 even after following every step. Is there something that I’m
missing? Do I need to reboot before it works?
this is work !!
thanks man
Still don’t work. “the driver doesn’t support the ap mode” problem. And I have tried your solution
which is to change the driver. My chip is Broadcom corporation BCM43142. and according to
the website, it can only use wl driver. Is there anything else I can do?
BTW I can share wifi in windows system.
also, my iphone device can not use the ad-hoc wifi which is set by the normal unity.
Sometimes, the iphone device can find the signal, but the wifi ask me for user name instead
of only keywords.
BTW the /hostapd_1.0-3ubuntu2.1_i386.deb can not be found from your website, is there
another source?
Thank you
my android phone(galaxy y duos lite) is asking for the password again and again and is getting

How do I configure the wifi security ? I don’t want my neighbors to use it . Whenever I try to set

Great fix only thing I had to do extra was make the connection a shared connection in the gui
connection manager. Once I did that I changed it back to ap from infrastructure and bingo.
worked like a charm.
Thank you very much. Is there any way to check which devices are connected to the hotspot at

Great and simple solution, simply by changing the ‘mode’ parameter in the connection file. But
my laptop is now assigning ip addresses in the 10.42.0.12 range, whereas my router works in
the 192.168.1.1 range. Is there an equally simple way to have my ubuntu hotspot simply work
as an access point and let the router assign the ip addresses to the laptop clients. Network
setup is as follows:
Thank you
Its working for me too.
I have a query . Can we assign security password for the Hotspot created by this method? If so
then please share how to do it. Thank you once again
thanks in advance.

DId it in Peppermint 5, so it should work- based on same Ubuntu. I have a physical WifFi
button- works when I press that. If you change password, or edit connection the mode goes
back to “infrastructure”.
I am keep on getting “Authentication problem” even though I am using the correct password and
security type “WPA & WPA2 Personal”
Many thanks Ji m! Now with my Lenovo PC under Ubuntu 14.04 it does work perfectly. I had the
“Authentication problem” issue with my Android phone (not with my Samsung PC under Ubuntu
12.04) and I just changed the Wi-Fi Security to WEP 40/128-bit (even with no security it does
work).
Unfortunately, if I follow the same steps in Ubuntu 12.04 the connection disappears (even from
the hidden connections) once I modify the file from mode=infrastructure to mode=ap – similarly
to what gocanny and vamsi experienced. Could you help me, please?
Wowwww, between dozens of tutos I saw on Internet, that’s the only one which works on

Hi,
On Xubuntu 14.04 it all seems to work OK but when connecting Andriod phone it says:
Authentication Error occurred – on the phone and keeps asking again for the key.
Any ideas?
Hi Martin, I had the same issue with my Android phone. Try to redo each step, but setting the
Wi-Fi Security to WEP 40/128-bit (or even to no security, if you want/can), instead of WPA &
WPA2 Personal. It worked for me.
The hotspot is created. My phone(Moto G 2nd gen) detects the wifi network. But it keeps
disconnecting and connecting repeatedly(in something like 5 seconds). What should I do to get
rid of this problem?

Thank you
Easy solution for linux mint 17.2, (others not worked for me)
1. Click network icon on the bar.
2.Choose create new WiFi network.
3. Give a name for network
4. Write a WPA & WPA personal password and create network
5. Then right click network icon on the bar, choose edit connections
6. Choose your new network, select wifi tab, then change mode from Ad-hoc to infrastructure
7. In the general tab select the automatically connect to this network ……
8. Make that step above
Now press Ctrl+Alt+T on keyboard to open terminal. When it opens, paste the commands below
and hit enter to edit the configuration file:
When the file opens, find out the line mode=infrastructure and change it to mode=ap. Finally
save the file.”
7. And finally right click network icon on the bar click enable networking, and do this again so
the networking will restart.
8. And
“When everything’s done, enable WIFI from Network Manager icon on the panel. It should
automatically connect to the hotspot you created. If not, select “Connect to Hidden Wi-Fi
Network …”

thanks.
I got this working, but I want to use a different IP address for the hotspot other than 10.42.0.1…

Thanks a lot to share your knowledge. This work for me.
But now I want to set default ip address creating connection. I try to set a ip address in the IPv4

Thanks.
Worked perfectly out of the gate! I used the little wifi dongle that came with a ($35) Raspberry
Pi. Chromecast is up and running against it.
Many thanks!

Using this method with standart network manager, but android phone cant load pages with this
connexion. But if i connect to this network from another laptop, i can use internet without
problems,
Other thing, is it possible to add some captive portal to this connexion?
Thank’s for sharing!
I followed the steps properly but in my case the file was empty now what is the next step
please help me
What I have run into is that while this works well to set up an access point, if I make any edits to
the ap in network manager I have to re-hack the file because the type=ap gets overwritten.
When I don’t want the AP functionality and instead want to connect to another AP it doesn’t
want to stay connected and always seems to jump to AP mode. Is there a way to prevent
Ubuntu from automatically connecting to AP mode?
It works.. I was trying a small password initially and I could not save the connection. You have to
chose a longer password..
Thanks
after
gksu gedit /etc/NetworkManager/system-connections/wifi-hotspot
its say that i should install gksu with the command “sudo apt-get install gksu”
but still l am not able to get it installed can anybody suggest me the exact command by which i
can fix my problem
Got it!

Hello sir. Thanks for the info. I did as you have written but I can’t find any network in the hidden
networks dropdown menu. Please help as I need it urgently. Thanks
Wow, you are the man. Haven’t tested it yet- ACER 5000 laptop (2006) w 64 bit AMD Turion +
64-bit Ubuntu 14.4 (actually Peppermint 5). Think this will work OK on mine? I have a huge
graphics problem cause of an obsolete SIS display adapter- I can’t show or open the network
manager at all- how do I start that connection from the Terminal?
Hi Ji M,
Please help me with this error.
ranasingha@ranasingha-system-product-name:~$ gksu gedit /etc/NetworkManager/system-

Do you have any idea where the problem could come from? and how we could solve it?
I’m not expert, but after reading here and there, I have the word DNS coming back, but I don’t
know what to do.
For everyone with the blank file error, you should do the following:
You’ll see all the files in there. Probably there will be some files with the same name and a “~” in
the end. These are the files that are making the problem.
Just execute:
sudo rm -f name_of_the_file~
(replace name_of_the_file with the name of the file you saw when you did “ls”)
Mode: Infrastructure option is not available in drop down button. I m using Ubuntu 16, is this
above method not for my Ubuntu 16? Thanks
