Dear readers, I’ve found a new way to create wireless hotspot in Ubuntu, AP mode with Android

devices support, using Unity’s Network Manager.

After this tutorial, I’ve found 3 ways to create wifi hotspot

Got it! in ap mode:
/
1. Using Ap-hotspot, an open-source app from github: see this post
(https://ubuntuhandbook.org/index.php/2014/02/wifi-hotspot-ubuntu-laptop-android/).

2. Using KDE connection editor, see the post (https://ubuntuhandbook.org/index.php/2014/06/share-

internet-with-android-ubuntu-1404/).

3. Using Unity’s Default Network Manager with a little hack. See below

Below I will show you how to use Unity’s default network manager to create a wireless hotspot with
Android devices support, tested in 64-bit Ubuntu 1404 with Nexus 4 and Sumsung Galaxy ace3.

1. Disable WIFI and plug in an internet cable to your laptop so that your Ubuntu is connect to a wired
internet and wireless is disabled.

2. Go to Network Icon on top panel -> Edit Connections …, then click the Add button in the pop-up
window.

3. Choose Wi-Fi from the drop-down menu when you’re asked to choose a connection type:

4. In next window, do:

experience on our website. Privacy policy

Type in a SSID
Got it!
Select mode: Infrastructure /
Device MAC address: select your wireless card from drop-down menu.

5. Go to Wi-Fi Security tab, select security type WPA & WPA2 Personal and set a password.

6. Go to IPv4 Settings tab, from Method drop-down box select Shared to other computers.

Got it!
When done, click the save button.
/
After above steps, a configuration file created under /etc/NetworkManager/system-connections directory.
File name is same to the connection name you typed in step 4.

Now press Ctrl+Alt+T on keyboard to open terminal. When it opens, paste the commands below and hit
enter to edit the configuration file:

gksu gedit /etc/NetworkManager/system-connections/wifi-hotspot

Replace wifi-hotspt with the connection name you typed in step 4.

When the file opens, find out the line mode=infrastructure and change it to mode=ap . Finally save the
file.

When everything’s done, enable WIFI from Network Manager icon on the panel. It should automatically
connect to the hotspot you created. If not, select “Connect to Hidden Wi-Fi Network …” and select it from
the drop-down box.

Got it!
/
(https://ubuntuhandbook.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/09/wifi-hotspot.jpg)

Now you can search and connect the access point from your Android mobile and enjoy!

It Will definitely works

you are getting Blank b/c you used the wifi-hostpot as it is. You must use the name of
the wifi you used to create at the begining.
sudo gedit /etc/NetworkManager/system-connections/your wifi name

Ask me if you face any problem

make sure to capitalize network manager like so “NetworkManager”

Hello,Lafon
It was my mistake too. I know I am too late but it might help for others.
“gksu gedit /etc/NetworkManager/system-connections/…..”
The command must be “sudo gedit /etc/NetworkManager/system-connections/”the name
of the wifi you created on the previous step”
save and exit. Bear in mind you should have to disable the wifi when you create it. Finally
Enable it.

It works for me perfectly. Leave me a message if you face any problem

Hi!
Looked like the solution to my problem, but ap-hotspots tells me my driver/modem doesn’t
support AP mode. :-( Thanks for the description anyhow.

But now my WIFI lan doesn’t work anymore, although I reinstalled the former (standard for
14.04) version of hostapd.

Any hints?

For those AP mode is not supported, you may try this:

I used the 3rd method (with Default Network Manager)

Is there any possibility to activate this Wifi Hotspot from the begining?…because, for me, is a
little tiresome to re-activate the Wifi connection everytime I start the system.

I used the third method.

system: lenovo b570 / ubuntu 14.04
android mobile : galaxy nexys / android 4.2.1

Problem: every time mobile connects to the hotspot wifi, automatically disconnects after not
more than a minute, but galaxy young is connected continiously (android 2.3.6), in the same
network

tried solution:
1.) changed the wifi freq band to 2.4ghz – same problem persists

please reply

Check this bug report comment (in my case, a new connection was being created with
mode=infrastructure when setting mode=ap on the already created connection):

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/network-manager/+bug/1186688/comments/4
(https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/network-manager/+bug/1186688/comments/4)

I got things working, with the last command ( nmcli con up id Hotspot ). (Seems that I already
had the rest of the tools/packages in place, so you might want to proceed from the
beginning.)

For command:
Got it!
/
gksu gedit /etc/NetworkManager/system-connections/wifi-hotspot

You should replace wifi-hotspot with the connection name you created in step 4 (see the
pic. in that step).

For nano editor, press Ctrl+X and type y to save changes and finally press Enter to
exit.

I could create hotspot but the problem was with security tab. Whenever I tried to select some
security I could not save the respective option and it becomes an open network. Please tell me
how to add security in another way. I even tried to add that in that configuration file but still in
vain.

Instead of going to Edit connections, click on Create New Wi-Fi Network, setup the userid
and password, and then use “gksu gedit /etc/NetworkManager/system-connections/(wifi-
hotspot name)”in the terminal. It will work.

Thanks for this tutorial, Ji m.

I was able to get it to work with all three methods, but once I activate the VPN, none of the
devices connected to the hotspot are able to access the Internet. The VPN works on the system
hosting the Wi-Fi hotspot, and the connection remains on the devices connected to it, but no
data downloads on them.

Are you familiar with what the problem could be?

Thanks again!

Now press Ctrl+Alt+T on keyboard to open terminal. When it opens, paste the commands
below and hit enter to edit the configuration file:

gksu gedit /etc/NetworkManager/system-connections/wifi-hotspot

Replace wifi-hotspt with the connection name you typed in step 4. (NOTE File was created
by step 4).

When the file opens, find out the line mode=infrastructure and change it to mode=ap. Finally
save the file.

Linux Mint Rebecca (17.1) it is simpler still. Bring up the Network Manager from the status bar
icon, click the ‘Create a Wireless Hotspot’ Button, configure it and off you go. Note your normal
WiFi network is disconnected while the hotspot is active so you have to have a wired connection
for this to be useful.

To reconnect to your WiFi network after disabling the hotspot click on Connect to a Hidden
Network button in the Network Manager Select your WiFi network connection from the
Connection drop down list and hit the Connect button and you should be restored to normal.

Great and simple solution, simply by changing the ‘mode’ parameter in the connection file. But
my laptop is now assigning ip addresses in the 10.42.0.12 range, whereas my router works in
the 192.168.1.1 range. Is there an equally simple way to have my ubuntu hotspot simply work
as an access point and let the router assign the ip addresses to the laptop clients. Network
setup is as follows:

Router –(Wired connection)–> Ubuntu Laptop –(wireless connection)–> Clients (Android

Smartphones)

The solution if your phone get stucks in obtaining IP address:

edit /etc/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.conf, change dns=dnsmasq to #dns=dnsmasq
and
restart the network manager:
sudo service network-manager restart

DId it in Peppermint 5, so it should work- based on same Ubuntu. I have a physical WifFi
button- works when I press that. If you change password, or edit connection the mode goes
back to “infrastructure”.

Many thanks Ji m! Now with my Lenovo PC under Ubuntu 14.04 it does work perfectly. I had the
“Authentication problem” issue with my Android phone (not with my Samsung PC under Ubuntu
12.04) and I just changed the Wi-Fi Security to WEP 40/128-bit (even with no security it does
work).
Unfortunately, if I follow the same steps in Ubuntu 12.04 the connection disappears (even from
the hidden connections) once I modify the file from mode=infrastructure to mode=ap – similarly
to what gocanny and vamsi experienced. Could you help me, please?

Hi Martin, I had the same issue with my Android phone. Try to redo each step, but setting the
Wi-Fi Security to WEP 40/128-bit (or even to no security, if you want/can), instead of WPA &
WPA2 Personal. It worked for me.

The hotspot is created. My phone(Moto G 2nd gen) detects the wifi network. But it keeps
disconnecting and connecting repeatedly(in something like 5 seconds). What should I do to get
rid of this problem?

Its even simplier in UBUNTU GNOME ….

1. top-right menu -> wifi -> settings

2. click button [use as wifi hotspot] … thats all, simple as that :-), no need to set ssid or
password, or any other details, its instantly generated and shown (computer name, random
password).

Easy solution for linux mint 17.2, (others not worked for me)
1. Click network icon on the bar.
2.Choose create new WiFi network.
3. Give a name for network
4. Write a WPA & WPA personal password and create network
5. Then right click network icon on the bar, choose edit connections
6. Choose your new network, select wifi tab, then change mode from Ad-hoc to infrastructure
7. In the general tab select the automatically connect to this network ……
8. Make that step above

“After above steps, a configuration file created under /etc/NetworkManager/system-connections

directory. File name is same to the connection name you typed in step 4.

Now press Ctrl+Alt+T on keyboard to open terminal. When it opens, paste the commands below
and hit enter to edit the configuration file:

gksu gedit /etc/NetworkManager/system-connections/wifi-hotspot

Replace wifi-hotspt with the connection name you typed in step 4.

When the file opens, find out the line mode=infrastructure and change it to mode=ap. Finally
save the file.”

7. And finally right click network icon on the bar click enable networking, and do this again so
the networking will restart.
8. And
“When everything’s done, enable WIFI from Network Manager icon on the panel. It should
automatically connect to the hotspot you created. If not, select “Connect to Hidden Wi-Fi
Network …”

What I have run into is that while this works well to set up an access point, if I make any edits to
the ap in network manager I have to re-hack the file because the type=ap gets overwritten.

When I don’t want the AP functionality and instead want to connect to another AP it doesn’t
want to stay connected and always seems to jump to AP mode. Is there a way to prevent
Ubuntu from automatically connecting to AP mode?

It works very well thank you.

However, for some reason, there are some website that can’t be accessed.
My computer which is sharing my 4G connection can access all website, but my friend
computer and his tablet can’t access some website…
It would not be a big issue if our websites (hosted by OVH) were not part of these unaccessible
website (curiously we can access the webmail of OVH)…

Do you have any idea where the problem could come from? and how we could solve it?

I’m not expert, but after reading here and there, I have the word DNS coming back, but I don’t
know what to do.

For everyone with the blank file error, you should do the following:

Open terminal (Ctrl + Alt + T);

Execute the comands:
cd /etc/NetworkManager/system-connections/
ls

You’ll see all the files in there. Probably there will be some files with the same name and a “~” in
the end. These are the files that are making the problem.

Just execute:
sudo rm -f name_of_the_file~
(replace name_of_the_file with the name of the file you saw when you did “ls”)

and after this create your network again.

Worked for me!
