WP1: Systematic review and Meta-analysis writing
• SR & MA Training Group’s vision is to integrate and exploit existing knowledge and data to provide greater
insights into the impact of Neglected Tropical Diseases on health systems and societies throughout Africa, and
to actively engage stakeholders in order to improve strategic planning and decision-making.

WP2: Training and Capacity Building

• builds on longstanding training and capacity building efforts by SR & MA Training Group partners and thereby
leveraging the successful methods, available materials, schemes, processes and strong working relationships,
to ensure the training in the writing of articles and more particularly the systematic reviews and meta-analysis.

WP3: Learn to peer review with confidence

• Gain practical experience in peer review with the Publons Academy, a free peer review training course. Write
real reviews with one-to-one guidance from a mentor, and gain exclusive access to the Publons Academy
Review Template and examples. Upon graduation from the course, be a certified peer reviewer, ready to
connect with top journal editors in your field.

WP4: Training in grant proposal writing

• To understand the process and requirements for applying for a grant; to writing our own grant application;
design our own strategy for attracting funding and moving forward in our research career.

Incidence and seroprevalence of Rabies virus in humans, dogs and other
animal species in Africa, a systematic review and meta-analysis.

• To determine the incidence and seroprevalence of Rabies virus

(RABV) in humans, dogs, and other animal species in Africa
• These estimates could be essential in the implementation of a global
strategic plan to eliminate the RABV by 2030 as adopted by the WHO,
OIE, and FAO.

AREF/EDCTP Preparatory Fellowships – 2019
VARIAFRICA

S R & M A Tra i n i n g G r o u p
AREF/EDCTP Preparatory Fellowships – 2019
Abstract
VARIAFRICA

The overarching goal of VARIAFRICA (Viral Acute Respiratory Infections in AFRICA) is to build an investigator network on
Acute Lower Respiratory Infections (ALRI) in Africa. There are substantial gaps in data on the burden of ALRI in sub-
Saharan Africa. The ALRI burden attributed to the sub-Saharan Africa is thus associated with an increased uncertainty and
is a likely under-estimate of the true burden. We believe that synergistic work by experts from Africa could contribute to
the production of relevant data on ALRI and thus reduce the existing uncertainty. The fellowship aims at gaining training
and expertise in evidence synthesis specifically through systematic reviews and use these to estimate ALRI burden in
Africa. The fellowship will also provide for training and skills development in writing grants and manuscripts and public
communication of science. Finally, one of the key deliverables of this fellowship would be the development of an ALRI
investigator group in Africa.
Therefore we propose the following specific aims:
Aim 1: To train in evidence synthesis using systematic reviews to estimate disease burden at national and regional levels.
Aim 2: to develop skills in writing successful grant proposals and manuscripts and in public dissemination of scientific
results. Aim 3: to build a newtwork of African investigators working on ALRI .
Significance: The research networks have proved their relevance in the progress of research work throughout the world
and more particularly in the industrialized countries. Systematic reviews have also proven their relevance in most fields
for the synthesis of existing data and the identification of information gaps.

What motivates
collaboration?
• Exponential increase of researchers and costs of conducting research
• Substantial reduction in the cost of communication and of travel
• Science is a social institution where advances depend crucially on interactions
with other scientists
• No single individual can perform all specialist tasks associated with modern
research that combine many fileds such as Bioinformatic
• Political factors encouraging greater levels of collaboration among
researchers
61
S R & M A Tra i n i n g G r o u p
Benefits of research collaboration
• High number of published output
• High credit given to published articles by the scientific community
• High impact of a paper with high number of citations
• can enhance the potential visibility of the work
• Sharing of knowledge, skills and techniques
• Fairly formal division of labour and thus ensures a more effective use of their
talents
• A source of stimulation and creativity
• Provides intellectual companionship that may lead also to personal
relationships
