I. RATIONALE
The Franklin Baker Company began its business operations in 1894 as an untapped
market for coconut existed but was adversely facing the problems and opportunities of operating
a coconut business. The company’s business operations primarily focused on developing a
method to conveniently shred and produce coconut meat of uniform quality. The company’s
name eventually changed to Franklin Baker Company of the Philippines on May 13, 1926.
However, General Foods Corporation acquired the company in 1927 and began processing
desiccated coconut shipped from the Philippines and manufactured the sweetened, toasted and
creamed coconut products for industrial and retail customers. Further, in 1968, General Foods
put up another desiccated coconut plant in Davao del Sur as part of its two-plant sourcing
strategy. Franklin Baker Company of the Philippines manufactures coconut products with its
most popular desiccated coconut. As a previous employee of this company, I was exposed to its
line of business. As far as success is concerned, corporate social responsibility (CSR) programs
are essential as these contribute to the company’s goodwill and may even improve its
sustainability conditions.
Governance comprises all the processes of governing, whether undertaken by the
government of a country, through either a market or a network, over a social system and whether
through the laws, norms, and power of language of an organized society (Cabrera, 2018).
Additionally, on the general view, it refers to a process whereby social elements make use of its
power, authority, and influence enacting policies and decisions concerning public life and social
upliftment (Cabrera, 2018). Trainings, seminars, workshops and symposiums are some of the
ways in empowering employees in corporate firms. Empowering employees is not only anchored
in developmental trainings but also in the actions of the workers. Actions in accordance to
corporate social responsibility (CSR) will lead to a better organizational image. Study showed
that the only way to achieve quality service is through empowering employees to do so (Weaver,
1994). Furthermore, it is also affected by employee empowerment, employee compensation,
teamwork and management leadership in a significant manner where the loyalty of an employee
of a business establishment can be improved (Chang, Chiu, & Chen, 2010).
One of the characteristics of good governance is responsiveness where it requires
institutions and processes to exert their utmost efforts in trying to serve the needs of all
stakeholders within a reasonable timeframe (Cabrera, 2018). This means that a company should
always anchor their plan of actions in the long-run in order for sustainability to be most likely
possible. As a matter of fact, the consensus oriented characteristic of good governance requires a
broad and long-term perspective on what is needed for sustainable human development and how
to achieve the goals and objectives of such development (Cabrera, 2018). Over the years of
rendering their services to the public, the Franklin Baker Company of the Philippines have
formulated different corporate social responsibility (CSR) programs. However, I have noticed
that the company has not yet formulated scholarship programs for college students. Nowadays,
the rapid growth of globalization has predicted market efficiencies for the corporate industry thus
increasing the demand for people working in line with the business sector. This is congruent with
the effectiveness and efficiency characteristic of good governance where companies meet the
needs of society while making the best use of resources at their disposal. Hence, this paper
proposes that the Franklin Baker Company of the Philippines should offer scholarship programs
for students studying business courses at Cor Jesu College, Inc.

who wish to enroll in business courses offered by the College of Accountancy, Business and
Entrepreneurshi[ (CABE) and the College of Special Programs (CSP). The scholarship shall be
limited to these colleges for the fact that the company is engaged in the corporate industry.
Therefore, it will be truly right and just to accept only business students for the purposes of
career guidance, official job trainings and secured job opportunities.

8. For formalities and legal compliance, the qualified applicants for this scholarship
program will be asked to sign contracts accepting the company’s scholarship program
and benefits therein.

V. IMPACT TO THE STAKEHOLDERS/BENEFICIARIES

Generally, this program will help students who aspire to be successful in the corporate
industry. In this way, it will motivate students in developing their potentials. The beneficiaries of
this scholarship program will be a step closer to their goals, dreams, and aspirations. Aside from
the fact that the company will shoulder their tuitions fees, the company will also ensure not just a
working place for their official job trainings but also future job opportunities. In this world where
heavy competition reigns in business, a heavy competition for applicants is also evident. Thus,
this program will ensure a win-win situation for the company and for the beneficiaries. The
Franklin Baker Company of the Philippines is committed towards emphasizing social
responsibility, quality, and management effectiveness. Hence, this scholarship program will
contribute towards how the company expects to achieve its goals and objectives in the long-run.
VI. SUSTAINABILITY MECHANISMS

It is the underlying principle of encouraging sustainability and social responsibility that

companies should be socially responsible in all its dealings with the communities where it
operates (Cabrera, 2018). Ensuring that its interactions serve its environment and stakeholders
in a positive and progressive manner that is congruent with its comprehensive and balanced
development is essential for achieving sustainability. The constant process of achieving
sustainability will most likely predict the efficiency and effectiveness of its business operations.
Recognizing and emphasizing the importance of the interdependence between business and
society will allow the company’s growth and development and promote mutually beneficial
relationship with its beneficiaries and its partner, Cor Jesu College, Inc. Therefore, this program
will contribute to the advancement of the business sector in the province of Davao del Sur.
Considering the sustainability concerns in the province of Davao del Sur, the Franklin Baker
Company of the Philippines will play an indispensable role alongside the government and civil
society in contributing solutions to complex global challenges like poverty, inequality,
unemployment, and even climate change.
