Fertilizers
• Fertilizer and pesticides are broadly classified as
chemicals.
• A chemical or natural substance added to soil or
land to increase its fertility.
• Fertilizers are applied to the soil to increase the
available supply of plant nutrients viz., NPK
(nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium) to
promote greater yields or better crop quality.
Fertilizer Forms
•Fertilizer and pesticides
are available in different
formulation which are
as under
1.Granular
2.Liquid
3.Gaseous
4.Manure
METHODS OF FERTILIZER APPLICATION
The different methods of
fertilizer application are as
follows:
1- Injection: is used to
place liquid or gaseous
fertilizer below the soil
near plant roots.
METHODS OF FERTILIZER APPLICATION-------------------continue

2- Surface broadcast: is a
method by which fertilizer is
applied on the surface across
an entire field.

3- Broadcast incorporated:
improves on the efficiency of
surface application by
incorporating fertilizer through
plowing.
METHODS OF FERTILIZER APPLICATION-----------------continue
4- Band application: is also known as starter application.
• Fertilizer is applied in bands near where developing roots will easily reach it;
• either to the side and below the seed rows, slightly below the seeds, or in
between rows.
• A common practice is to band fertilizer 2 inches to the side and 2 inches
deeper than the seeds or plants.
Methods of fertilizer application------------------
5- Fertigation: is distribution
with water-soluble fertilizers
and chemicals through an
irrigation system.

6- Foliar application: is
application of a small amount
of fertilizer or mineral
through direct spraying onto
the leaves.
Methods of fertilizer application------------------
7- Sidedressing: is when fertilizer is applied
between rows of young plants to provide a
boost during periods of rapid growth and
nutrient uptake. Eg. corn plants.
8- Top dress: is when fertilizer or manure is
spread on established fields (grasses, legumes).
9- Seed placement: A small amount of fertilizer
is placed with corn seeds during planting. Both
liquid and dry can be used.
Type of dry fertilizer equipment
Distributors for dry fertilizer may be classified as,
•Attachment for row crop planters or cultivators
•Special open field fertilizer drills
•Combine unit used for fertilizer + grain drills
Type of dry Fertilizer Application machines
There are different type
of dry fertilizer application
machines which are as
under

1- broadcasting machine
2- row crop fertilizer
machine
Type of dry Fertilizer Application machines---------------------
1- Broadcasting (Dry-Fertilizer Broadcaster)
it is a machine for spreading granular
and powder form inorganic fertilizers
during pre-planting soil treatment
and for top dressing of
grain crops and grasses.
• Fertilizer broadcasting before ploughing,
• Placing at the ploughing depth by a
distributor.
• Drops fertilizer in each furrow.
• Broadcasting and drill into the soil after
ploughing and before planting.
• Appling during the planting operation.
Type of dry Fertilizer Application machines---------------------
2- Row crop fertilizer Machine
• This machine is used for row crop.
• This machine has good distribution.
• This machine is little bit expensive
than broadcasting machine.
3- Liquid fertilizer application Machines
Liquid fertilizer application Machines
• Liquid fertilizer machines are use for soil surface and direct
application to the standing crop.
• It has uniform distribution.
• It has not too expensive for application.
• Growth regulator can be spraying to promote the plant growth.
4- Gaseous fertilizer application Machines
Gaseous fertilizer application Machines
• It is sub-surface fertilizer application machine.
• It is deposits gas fertilizer below the ground surface.
• A gas pump is used with this machine and pressure develop by
the pump.
• The pump is used to the force, the gas fertilizer metering open
to extend some pressure.
