Steps to determine the free area from catalogue with neglecting the

thickness of diffuser’s blade.

The task was to determine the “free area” of this diffuser. So how to solve
it?

Fundamental useful formula for flow rate is…

Q(m3/s) = v(m/s) x A(m2)

Q is given, 2774 m3/h

Change to m3/s = 2774 m3/h x 1 hr/3600s
= 0.77 m3/s

v is also given = 1.5 m/s

So,
Area = 0.77 m3/s / 1.5 m/s
= 0.513 m2

Is that answer being free area?

We then can confirm it by using the given data from catalogue.

This is NOT represented

rectangular. It’s for square shape
dimension.
Given face size dimension is 1200 x 600 (1.2 m x 0.5 m)

Face size is D

D (Width) = W + 0.123 m
D (Length) = L + 0.123 m

Since the useful area for produce free area is refer to the neck size C (W
x L), so…

L = 1.2 m – 0.123 m
= 1.077 m

W = 0.6 m – 0.123 m
= 0.477 m

Therefor, C = 0.477 m x 1.077 m

= 0.51 m2
