Repertoires can be defined as the range of languages or varieties

available for use by a speaker, each of which enabled the speaker to

perform a particular social role.

The definition implies that repertoires concern with to what extents

individuals or members of speech community master languages or

varieties of a language to perform social role. So here 'to what extents'

deal with the amount of languages or varieties. It is true since the

members of a speech community are not only competent in only one

speech variety. Like Toba Batak Language, it has varieties such as: Toba

Batak Silindung, Humbang, Balige, Samosir for which Toba Batak people

use and they understand each other.

Now see the example of Father and Mother Repertoire in Fase A and B in

the material embedded sent to you in the image. Then explain it.

ANSWER:

Verbal repertoire is the ability to speak in accordance with the context

and situation along with the varieties that are owned or mastered by

speakers. There are two kinds of verbal repertoire, namely:

a. Individually owned and refers to the verbal tools that are mastered by
a speaker, including the ability to choose the social norms of the

language of the situation and its function

b. Which is owned by society as a whole and refers to all the verbal tools

that exist in a society, along with the norms for selecting variations that

are appropriate to the social context.

If we see from the example in the image that the Case A is different from

Case B.

The word of father's ini verbal repertoire in the case A we can see the

there are four dialect to say father's. But in the case B to say father's we

can say in formal singapore English also colloquial singapore English and

the second of Native Southern Chinese Dialect.

The other word is "Mother's" we can see the VR of this word that there

are some dialect that we can use to say it. In case A there are the first of

native southern chinese dialect and bazaar malay but in Case B also

same like the word of father's which is in dialect of FCE, CSE, and the last

So from the example we conclude that the use of verbal repertoire is

politeness norms that an individual uses when speaking to a teacher is

different from when he speaks to his peers and the use of language used

in the field of education will be different from the language used in the

military sector.
Indonesians consider Indonesian and Malaysian to be different, even

though they come from the same language of origin, namely Malay. This

is because Indonesians do not feel they use the same language as

Malaysians, so that the Indonesian language community and the

Malaysian language community are formed. It is different with

Americans and British people, they feel they use the same language,

namely English, so that a unified English community is formed. The large

variety of languages in the world causes many different language

societies. This greatly enriches and strengthens the culture and social

identity of each user. All of us as users of this language should be proud

and try to always maintain the language we use now, namely Indonesian

so that we all become good Indonesian people and comply with existing

linguistic principles.
