Dear readers,

It is with great pleasure and honor that we present you with the first issue of Deus Vult, the journal of Catholiq High
I.Q. Society.

As you know, Catholiq High I.Q. Society was founded in 2017, on the Christian Holy day of Pentecost (June 4th
2017). The main idea behind the society was to create a space for the free-flow of ideas and information across
wide areas of interests governed by principles of Christian ethics and morals. Over these two and a half years we've
managed to gather a substantial number of highly intelligent individuals who show interest in topics connected
with Christianity, intelligence, and freedom of information. This journal was just another logical step forward in that
direction and that is why we are here, proud to present to you in one place, in a more permanent format, selected
materials; the work of our members.

I would like to give special thanks to our editor Mr. Phillip Power. Besides the journal editing tasks, Phillip`s role
was to represent interests of our readers and also their needs through selection and thorough review of our
authors' papers. Courage is needed for a job of editor especially when you take in account that authors who
contributed to this magazine are not ordinary kinds of people, but a highly selected group of individuals who
represent the top one-thousandth of the general population. Phillip has managed to navigate through all Scyllas
and Charybdis with such confidence, as if this was something he does every day for a living. In fact, he and all
contributors, are pro-bono volunteers and they are the ones that have made this journal possible. So I thank them
here for their hard work and support.

Deus Vult will be a biannual journal. We will try to prepare the first issue around Pentecost and the second around
Christmas. All materials in the journal are created by our members. They proudly present you the products of their
minds – articles, essays, interviews, puzzles, art, etc. As far as I know, not one of us is a trained media professional so
you will forgive the slight blemishes that may occur here from time to time. If you have any suggestions, questions
or you just want to tell us how you feel about this jouernal, feel free to contact our editor or myself. Contact

Dear readers of Deus Vult,

When I joined the HIQ community, I told myself that I was only going to join ISPE, and that would satisfy the
insatiable itch for intellectual discourse and companionship. It didn’t take me long to realize that high IQ doesn’t
correlate with good judgment or a well-formed conscience. Soon, I became aware of a strange, subterranean
dichotomy, which revealed itself through periodic clashes on discussion boards. There were atheists, Freemasons,
agnostics, and pantheists who all seemed to revel in the notion of bringing down the Catholic Church. At first, I
attempted to reason with these people, but I was quickly made aware that they weren’t interested in truth or
rational discussion,

Indeed, in their case the prophecy of Isaiah is fulfilled that says: “‘You will indeed hear but never understand, and you will
indeed see but never perceive. For this people's heart has grown dull, and with their ears they can barely hear, and their
eyes they have closed, lest they should see with their eyes and hear with their ears and understand with their heart and
turn, and I would heal them.’ -Mt 13:14-15

I couldn’t understand how people with such high reasoning ability could generate such irrational argumentation. It
dovetails with a perennial question of mine: why would the angles, who had perfect knowledge of their choices, deny
God? Angels, whose intellects are far superior to our own, made two distinct decisions: 2/3 chose God, 1/3 did not.
This reality is pivotal for me and my perception of reality, because it means that intelligence, reasoning, knowledge
and understanding necessitate nothing. All that’s left is our will. At some point, people choose against God and truth
and no degree of reasoning can convince them otherwise because reason isn’t how they made that choice to begin
with. It’s the dark side of free will; the consequence of our potential to love.

I think it’s important to continue to engage in the intellectual arena of secular HIQ societies, but I’m also grateful we
have the sanctuary of CatholIQ. I see this society as a metaphysical parish, and the rest them as the world. We need
a place where we can openly discuss Christian thought without constant assaults from without, caedes undique as the
Romans would say. But what is to be done with the world? Either they are ignorant of the Truth, seeking the Truth and
have errored, or they are hiding from the Truth for fear of it and love of self. To the latter, Jesus has given instruction,

As you enter the home, give it your greeting. If the home is deserving, let your peace rest on it; if it is not, let your peace return
to you. If anyone will not welcome you or listen to your words, leave that home or town and shake the dust off your feet. Truly I
tell you, it will be more bearable for Sodom and Gomorrah on the day of judgment than for that town. - Mt 10:12-15

And to those seeking the Truth, I offer Deus Vult.

Interview With Iakovos Koukas

Introduction
Iakovos Koukas is the President and Founder of GENIUS
High IQ Network, GIFTED High IQ Network and THIS,
4G, BRAIN, ELITE, 6N, NOUS, 6G and NOUS200 High
IQ Societies. He is also the co-Founder of Genius At
Work Initiative and GENIUS Journal.
He is the winner of the WGD 2015 Genius of the
Year Award for Europe and the VEDIQ Guild 2019
Intellectual Leader of the Year Award. He is also well
known for holding the world record IQ score of 204
sd15 on an officially normed IQ test (MATRIQ high
range IQ test) since May 2019.
Tell us something about yourself, your childhood,
family background, your early years in school and
what your current career looks like today.
Both of my parents come from the Aegean Island of
Mykonos, but I was raised in Piraeus, Greece. I come
from a quite traditional family of high ethical and
cultural standards.
I always felt somewhat off from the other world.
Growing up was quite tough for me and several times I
thought that something was wrong with me. At school,
I had quite different interests from my classmates and
I was bored in class. I started studying science and
philosophy at the age of 12 and writing novels at the age
of 14, which eventually led me to Philosophy of Science.
Banking was the only field that was hiring at the
time I was applying for getting a job. I never thought
I would make a career out of it. It is not something
representative of who I am or what I can do, but I
had to make a living in a country where people with
exceptional abilities do not flourish. Being creative
and doing what I love in my spare time has become
fulfilling over the last years, especially within the high
IQ community.

When did you or your parents find out about your
extraordinary talent for problem solving? How did
your high intelligence affect your interpersonal
relationships - have you ever felt your giftedness
has taken away some other part of life that other
normal children enjoyed?
I discovered it myself after achieving high scores on
the Greek Mensa supervised IQ tests and later on
several high range IQ tests. Until then, I believed
that something was fundamentally wrong with my
mind, thinking so differently from all the other people
around me, but I never thought I missed anything really
important in childhood.
You scored 204 sd15 on the Matriq test, designed
by the famous Nikolaos Soulios, making you
the record holder for the highest score on a
normed high range test in history. Can you tell us
something about that test, the strategy you used
for solving it and the time you spent? Did you have
a feeling that you would score that high?
It is one of the most original verbal tests I have ever
encountered. The test has a deep philosophical aspect,
so I treated it as a term paper. My philosophical
background helped me with the concepts and I
devoted 40 hours on the test within a month. I never
thought I would score that high, it was a huge surprise.
Besides Matriq, you also received high scores
on other high range tests, and on many, the
top score. Can you tell us when you discovered
the world of high range testing? What was the
first test you tried? Did you ever dream about
becoming a world champion?
The first high range test I tried was probably MACH
by Nikolaos Soulios and its spatial items intrigued my
imagination. Truth is I never dreamed about becoming
a world champion on high range IQ testing, there
are several extremely smart people in the high IQ
community, the academic community and the world.

Your score is listed in almost all relevant score
lists available today. You are a decent and
honorable member of the high I.Q. community.
But even still, some people try to undermine
your hard work and your score on Matriq. What
is your message to them?
It is a matter of one’s beliefs. Some people just do
not perceive verbal tests as accurate at estimating ‘g’
as other high range tests, such as spatial or numerical,
for example.
Was Matriq the last test you solved, and will
you continue taking high range tests? I have
noticed that when some people achieve very
high scores, they lose interest in high range tests,
either because they feel that they have achieved
what they came for, or they feel that scoring
lower on some future test will influence people’s
perception of them. Do either of these factors
affect your decision on whether to continue
taking high range tests?
MATRIQ was not the last test I solved, it was VRA50
by Theodosis Prousalis. I am not currently planning to
solve any other HRT due to my very busy schedule.
In a way, one may lose their motive after a top score. I
rarely take IQ tests but I am still interested in them, so
I will probably try some in the future.
People of Greek origin seem to score very well on
high range tests, many even making the tops of
HR test leaderboards. Can you tell us the secret
of that success? Is it food, climate, discipline, the
educational system, family upbringing?
I believe it has to do with the Greek cultural
background and the Greek language and the way they
structurally shape one’s mind and psyche.
Besides being a fantastic test-taker and world
record holder, you are also the founder of the
GENIUS Network and the societies within that
network. Can you tell us more about GENIUS, its
societies, and its members?

GENIUS High IQ Network is the creative family of
the high IQ community. Most of its members create
something for the IQ community or the world. My
original vision for GENIUS consisted of two major parts:
1) bringing together really smart people in societies
where they could interact without competition and
disputes and 2) engaging people in projects where
they would be able to use their higher intellects for the
benefit of humankind. Creating 4G High IQ Society, my
first IQ society ever, the seven societies that followed it,
uniting all of them under the umbrella of GENIUS High
IQ Network and watching it grow and being embraced
by the high IQ people marked the era of the successful
fulfilment of the first part. The fulfilment of the second
part of my vision was marked by GENIUS AT WORK
Initiative, four challenges to solve major world issues,
and GENIUS Journal, the creative journey of the high
IQ community, which is now helping the intellectual
growth of the society by presenting useful and thought
provoking material.
What is the general purpose of any High I.Q.
society? What do founders expect and what is the
reality? I can say that many of these societies are
simply listings of people, without any activity. Do
these kinds of societies serve a purpose? What is
the reason that so many people want to be listed
as a member in any available society?
High IQ societies may help individuals meet like-
minded people in a hospitable environment that could
assist them form new ideas or evolve existing ones.
We could unite forces for making the world a better
place. In reality, this is not always the case. It mainly has
to do whether the leading figures have a vision or not.
Most of the IQ societies don’t serve a specific purpose,
they feel like special interest groups. Maybe people just
decide to join IQ societies for enhancing their image or
self-confidence.
 Domagoj Kutle
You are also a test creator- a very respectable
one at that. I tried some of your tests and I must
say that I was amazed with level of intellectual
sophistication you successfully implemented,
especially the verbal ones. Can you tell me more
about how you get the ideas for your tests?
In order to create something worthwhile, one
needs to be highly creative and skilled. Was your
long career in test taking a recipe for success?
Do you have advice for young test makers? How
can they achieve their full potential and create
something that will one day become a classical
high range test?
Thank you for your kind words, it’s an honor. Most
of my ideas come from the study of science and its
philosophy. It mostly has to do with creativity, test
taking just helped me refining my ideas. The only advice
to young test makers would be: always be original. Full
potential is unfolding with hard work only.
Tell us more about people taking your tests: do
you accept alternative answers, and have you ever
had any negative experiences with test takers?
In some cases, statistical research suggests that I
should accept alternatives, but there are few such
cases. I believe all test makers have had unpleasant
experiences with test takers, we are all people after all.
This year GENIUS will publish its first magazine,
Gnorizon. Can you tell us more about the origin
of name ‘Gnorizon’, about the editor and your
expectations? How can people contribute to
make this magazine successful? Is a hard-copy
printed edition possible? I know it’s expensive,
but is it possible to fund it through donations?
The first issue of GENIUS Journal is called Gnorizon,
from the Greek word “gnorizon”, which means aware
and knowing. Editor-in-chief and co-founder is Daniel
Pohl, a remarkable person, a unique genius and a hard
working GENIUS board member. All high IQ people
who have something original to contribute are invited
to submit their work to us. It’s a digital magazine, but

with the help of a color printer one can easily print
a hard copy. It is currently free of charge and not
supported by donations.
Besides GENIUS, you are also one of the founders
of CATHOLIQ High IQ Society. Can you tell us
about your view on religion in general? Do you
believe in God?
There are several religions in the world and most of
them promote the ethical and moral virtues of the
human existence, but not all religious leaders live up
to the expectations of the founders. I am a Christian
Orthodox and I believe in God.
I asked this question to Paul and Patrick, and I will
ask it to you as well, as I find it very important:
today we are witnessing the promotion of
unhealthy liberal ideologies and lifestyles, from
homosexualism, pederasty, transgenderism,
prostitution, and euthanasia to suicide, senicide,
abortion, extreme feminism, and militant atheism.
These ideologies are being promoted from the
highest places of power where extreme amounts
of money are being invested. What do you think
is the ultimate goal of the cultural and ideological
colonization that we are witnessing today? What
can be done about it?
The modern society is becoming more and more liberal
and we are heading towards a social model where in
the name of democracy and diversity everything will be
accepted. Sadly, there are few things we can do, mostly
from inside the system, trying to state our opinions on
ethics with well-presented arguments.
At the end of this interview, feel free to address
our readers.

world in every possible way you can, your possibilities

you down. Some people may see you as the strange
ones or as misfits, while you are actually the most

Interview with Paul Cooijmans

You have been producing and norming IQ tests
for a very long time, starting in the early 1990`s.
That is almost 30 years in the business. Some of
your tests have become models for future test
makers. You invented spatial tests, with answers
being submitted as drawings, complex numerical
sequences, models for the calculation of norms,
and many other things in the foundations of the
high range world. Some call you the father of
high range intelligence tests, the Eminence Griese
of the High Range Community. No other author
has been on the scene this long; nor created
so many quality tests. What we are witnessing
today is a boom in production of I.Q. tests and
a unification of tools for norm-setting. More and
more people are interested in taking high range
tests not only as tools of self -assessment but also
as a hobby. What is your opinion about today`s
high range test scene, the tests themselves, test
authors, test takers and the future of IQ testing
in general? Do you see any limitations?
First, I want to say that the goal of high-range
psychometrics is to extend the range of conventional
I.Q. tests, which measure mainly around the average
and have too low ceilings for some candidates, or lose
validity in the top part of their range. It is uncertain
whether this can be done successfully, so that is what
we are trying to find out; up to what level can you
measure intelligence? I do not know all of the current
high-range tests, so I can not know how many of them
are seriously attempting this.
Another aspect of high-range testing has been to bring
intelligent people in contact with each other through
I.Q. societies. This has been useful in the past, but with
the advent of the Internet and social media, the need
for it has decreased. The free interaction that is now
possible through online groups may be just as effective
as are societies with I.Q. requirements. The added value
of societies has gone down I would say.

Regarding test authors, it has struck me that those who
feel attracted to creating this kind of test are often
not highly intelligent themselves, sometimes even well
below the median of high-range candidates (there exist
highly intelligent test creators too, of course). That their
tests nevertheless seem to work is probably because
of the omnipresent nature of intelligence; it expresses
itself in almost anything one does, so that it would be
quite hard to design a test that does not measure it.
An extreme case, that nevertheless illustrates the
current generation of test creators magnificently and
representatively, is that of a person A who once scored
zero right on a test of mine. He furiously demanded
a new and higher score. Shortly thereafter another
submission to the same test came in, from a person B;
it resembled the one from person A. I scored it, and
immediately received another furious e-mail message
from person A, saying, “You did not score that test
honestly! I had changed six answers so my score can
not be zero again!” Apparently he had used the identity
and address of an acquaintance to send his revised
answers. Not much later this person A was on a social
media group devoted to high-range tests, spreading a
test he had created. That is how they typically start.
About test takers, their motivations differ: some want
to know how intelligent they are, some want to join
societies, and some just like taking tests. All those
motivations are in order, provided one arrives at
honest, realistic scores. Problems occur with people
who are only interested in high scores to brag about
and will do anything for that, including cheating. That
messes up the statistics, invalidates the tests, and spoils
it for the honest candidates. It amazes me at times
that some who cheat do not seem to understand that
a score obtained by fraud does not reflect their true
level. The most frustrating cases are those who manage
to get a high score from me by some banal kind of
fraud, and then use their thus stolen association with
me for blatant self-promotion, taking advantage of

the fact that I can not expose them because I have to
protect their privacy as test candidates.
To speak about the future of I.Q. testing in general, you
have to recall the original goal of it: To separate the
stupid from the lazy. When children were performing
badly at school, the question was whether this was
through lack of ability, or because they were not doing
their best. From the early twentieth century on, I.Q.
tests have been excellent for that purpose and barely
needed improvement. In the future, I.Q. tests will keep
fulfilling that task. Whenever someone is functioning
badly at school, work, or in society in general, I.Q. tests
will help find out why this is so. The classical I.Q. tests
are so good already that it seems uncertain whether
new approaches to mental testing will ever improve
on them. Examples of such approaches are adaptive
testing (where the next question of a test depends
on the candidate’s previous answers), measurement
of elementary cognitive tasks like reaction speed and
working memory, and possibly genetic analysis. I am
not so sure that any of those will ever replace classical
psychometrics. An alleged advantage of both adaptive
testing and measurement of elementary cognitive
tasks is that they be able to measure on a ratio scale,
while classical psychometrics measures at best on an
intervallic scale.
Regarding limitations, the intervallic (non-ratio) nature
of classical psychometrics could be seen as a limitation.
The invention of a ratio scale for intelligence would be
a breakthrough.
Almost all the world`s best test takers have tried
your tests. Can you compare the early days of the
high range scene to the test takers and climate of
today? Is there a difference? Were people in the
early days more serious in their attempts to give
their best and achieve the best possible score?
Do you think the number of tests available, and
the opportunity to improve through serial test
taking, has affected how people take tests? Were
the legends of the early scene better than today´s
‘champions’ in any way?

The main difference is that it now goes almost
exclusively via the Internet, while previously the tests
were published in paper journals or spread by regular
mail. So you needed a lot more patience, as well as
willingness and skill to look things up in reference
books, go to libraries, neatly write the answers down,
and so on. The Internet has made access to tests,
researching things, and submitting answers much
easier. If you make something easier, the threshold
for engaging in it drops, and thus the average level
of those engaging in it drops. Also, the new Internet
environment seems more inviting to hedonistic,
superficial, “live in the moment” types, while the old
way of conducting high-range tests was biased toward
introverted, serious, bookworm kind of people. The
group of high-range candidates may have become
more representative of the general population as a
result, and less intellectual, but it still is a small fraction.
Below I.Q. 130, interest in taking I.Q. tests still goes
down steeply. People like doing what they are good at.
Another difference is that there are many more
tests to take now than in the past. This, too, plays in
the hands of persons with less than long attention
spans. They can afford to take many tests quickly and
carelessly, because there are enough tests left to take.
A hypothesis of mine is that conscientious people,
when taking many tests, have their scores relatively
close together, while unconscientious candidates have
a wider spread of scores. The least conscientious
candidates obtain their top scores by cheating and
their lowest scores by deliberately underperforming.
A possible problem with this large number of tests is
that there may be overlap between them in terms of
contents, causing a learning effect between tests, which
inflates the scores and rids them of “g” loading.
It is not so that people’s results keep improving while
taking many tests; there is mainly some improvement
over the first several tests (disregarding the natural
improvement when growing up to adulthood, and
disregarding the “improvement” by fraud).

The highest scorers of the past were not necessarily
better than those of today; such people are simply rare
in any era, and far between. I protest against words like
“legends” and “champions”. High intelligence is an asset,
not an achievement, so it is inappropriate to praise
people for it. The real achievement, for candidates, is to
take many tests honestly, arriving at honest scores, and
thus assisting in the research. It does not matter how
high or low one scores. Both high and low scores are
needed to study intelligence. Without variance there is
no psychometrics. It is a study of differences. It is tragic
if people refrain from sending answers because they
think their scores will be low, or because they think I
am only interested in high scores.
There is also a very important thing that does not
differ between past and present high-range testing: the
large male-female participation difference. The advent
of the Internet with all its blessings has not changed
the female disinclination to engage in difficult mental
tasks. Roughly speaking there are eleven times more
male than female scores. This has been so for decades
and can also be seen in tests by other authors (insofar
as they publish honest statistics) so it is not due to
bias in my tests or samples. On the level of candidates
this ratio is about four to five times more males than
females, implying that males also take more than twice
as many tests per person.
As we know, early tests were not so culture-free.
One needed to be very skilled in mathematics or
logic to even solve a single question from tests
like the Mega or Titan of Mr. Hoeflin. Do you
think that high range tests need to be completely
culture-free? Are we gaining or losing anything by
making them culture-free?
What is needed are high-range tests of diverse
nature and contents. Some culture-free, some not. It
is the diversity in tests that enables the study of “g”
and its possible presence in the high range. You can
not extract “g” when all tests are the same! When
tests of different nature intercorrelate positively, you

know they share a common factor. When similar tests
intercorrelate positively, this may simply be a result
of the similarity between the tests and you still know
nothing about “g”.
A disadvantage of culture-free tests is that they lack
the verbal aspect and therefore are biased against
individuals and groups whose strongest side is verbal
ability, while overstating the I.Q.’s of individuals and
groups whose strongest side is in non-verbal areas. For
instance, they underestimate the general intelligence
level of Blacks while overestimating that of East Asians.
So they are actually not culture-free after all. Do notice
the irony: in order to understand that culture-free test
are racially biased, you need to know of the highly
politically incorrect racial differences in mental ability
profiles! A classical “catch 22” situation for deniers of
hereditary racial differences in intelligence.
Another disadvantage of culture-free tests is lack of
robustness. The many current high-range culture-free
tests seem to have overlap in the structure of their
problems so that the same solving strategy can be
applied to problems in more than one test, causing a
learning effect between tests and thus an inflation of
scores and loss of “g” loading. If you solve a task with
a learnt strategy, that task has no “g” loading for you.
Only tasks that are novel to you carry “g” loading. This
fact is not well understood, and some think that you
actually become more intelligent by learning to solve
I.Q. test problems!
It is like in the world of humour: Top comedians say
there exist only ten basic jokes, and all they do is think
of variations on those. Well, in abstract reasoning tests
too, there are limits to what test designers can think
of, hence the overlap between tests. Someone with
an I.Q. in the high 130s is smart enough to figure out
some recurring problem types and thus score in the
160s on a following test that contains those. But no,
that person has not become any cleverer!

Hans Jurgen Eisenck was the first who created a
book of tests for self-assessment. He was criticized
at the time for revealing some of the tools the
psychologists of his time kept secret. Now we
have many online tests that imitate world famous
standardized tests, such as RAPM or some parts
of WAIS, some even being available through the
internet etc. Do you believe that the world of
standardized testing is more or less robust against
cheating and the ‘practice effect’ than it was when
you began?
I assume that with “standardized testing” you mean
the tests used in mainstream psychometrics; high-
range tests are standardized just as much though, since
the word “standardized” means nothing more than
that the scores are expressed in terms of distance
to the mean in standard deviations. I would say that
regular psychological I.Q. tests are less robust against
cheating and practice effects now than in the 1990s.
It is not so hard any more to become acquainted
with the contents and intended solutions of some
of the mainstream tests. With the needed fraudulent
preparation, someone with an I.Q. around 115 will
score near the ceilings of those tests. Notorious
targets of manipulation are the WAIS, Cattell Culture
Fair, and Raven’s Advanced Progressive Matrices. It is
bizarre that some societies still accept tests like that
for admission. I know someone who calls himself a
“professional test taker”; has a perfect score on the
WAIS, but in communication with him you clearly
notice he is some 30 to 40 I.Q. points lower than his
score suggests.
One of the means authors use when trying
to make their tests better is improving the
correlation between their tests and standard
psychological tests. They try to improve internal
consistency of the test by calculating Cronbach`s
Alpha. Are those two the main parameters one
should look for when constructing high range
tests? Do you have advice for young test creators?
What should they pay attention to when trying
to make a serious I.Q. test out of set of puzzles

they’ve created? Is the pool of test takers they
are speaking to (or that is available to them)
important in any way?
Trying to improve the correlation between one’s high-
range tests and standard psychological tests betrays a
deep misunderstanding of this topic. Mainstream tests
measure around the average, high-range tests measure
in the high range. If both do their job well, there can
logically not be a high correlation between them due
to the limited overlap, and due to the loss of validity
of tests at the extremes of their respective measured
ranges, which is where that overlap occurs. If one
does not understand this offhand, one had better not
occupy oneself with this field altogether.
For illustration, early high-range tests like Mega and
Titan were normed mainly by anchoring them to
scores on college tests like the Scholastic Aptitude
Test and Graduate Record Examination, which
did have high ceilings at the time (later they were
dumbed down). With regular psychological tests,
one typically finds correlations in the order of 0 to
.5, sometimes even negative. That makes them less
suitable for norming purposes.
What one should primarily do when creating a high-
range test is to create diverse problems that require
mental ability to be solved, and that do not become
much easier with a brief Internet search or use of
existing software. One should not strive for certain
statistics like reliability, but focus on letting test takers
use their intelligence. Incoming answers and comments
can help to find possible bad items or other flaws.
Statistics are computed when a few dozen of test
submissions have come in, and may further help to
diagnose the test. However, statistics are not selling-
points! It is not so that a test with a high reliability,
or a high correlation with a particular other test, is
therefore a good test! It is sheer idiocy to recommend
a test because it correlates .99 with the WAIS or has a
Cronbach’s alpha of .96. It should also be understood

that statistics are not fixed properties of a test. They
are just as much properties of the sample, of the
group of candidates on which they were computed.
A test may have a reliability of .99 in one sample, and
.78 in another. Conscientious candidates yield higher
values than lax candidates. It is a mistake to take a test
with certain statistics in a given sample and administer
it to an entirely different group, expecting the same
statistical behaviour of that test. The statistics you see in
any given report are not tied to that test forever after.
This false notion of test statistics as fixed to a test
has caused damage in the past, when tests with good
statistics in their initial norming sample were used
for society admission, resulting in one unqualified
idiot after another pouring in. The group of people
doing their best to enter a society was different from
the group of volunteers taking the test for norming
purposes, so the norms were too high for the former.
You have to norm a test on the actual group for which
it is meant!
The most important statistic for a high-range or
admission test is its robustness. That is, its resistance
to score inflation over time. Obviously, you can
not do proper high-range I.Q. research with tests
whereon the scores are unstable, do not have the
same meaning at different times, let alone that you
could use such for society admission (liberal people
are fond of inflationary tests though, as they really
want anyone to be able to join I.Q. societies and are
terrified of the differences that show up on proper
tests). I have quantified robustness by computing the
correlation between raw scores and a time indicator.
Numbering the months works best. Chronological
ranks may do too, but probably not when many test
submissions occur in a short period. Conditions that
improve a test’s robustness include having a mixture
of item types in it, allowing one attempt only (retests
are a way for people to figure out the intended
answers), not publishing the test but sending it directly
to the candidate on request (published tests are

often discussed publicly), and requiring registration,
identification, and/or a fee.
Another very important statistic is hardness; the
proportion of a test that is on average missed. There
needs to be headroom for people to score as high as
they can. If scores pile up near the ceiling of the test,
the test is not distinguishing between those people,
and it is not a high-range test.
Other statistics are those regarding the quality of the
norms (reflected in the quality and amount of data
used for norming), resolution (reflected in the spread
of raw scores; a greater spread means finer resolution),
validity (reflected in the test’s correlations with other
tests and real-world variables), and reliability (the
correlation of a test with itself).
Single sided tests are the most popular form
of IQ tests today, especially verbal tests in the
form of analogies and associations and numerical
sequences. Some people are very good at single
sided tests, but when confronted with mixed
item tests their scores go down. You decided that
your tests need to be in a mixed format. Why do
you think it is important to filter out ‘fach-idiots’
(single-sided test specialists) if all these tests are
trying to measure the same thing (do they?)?
I have never said that single-sided test specialists
should be filtered out! I just want my tests to give a
reasonable indication of general intelligence, and have
come to the conclusion that homogeneous (one-
sided) tests do not suffice for that. People’s scores
on homogeneous tests may deviate too much from
their true levels in “g”. Such tests do not catch in a
wide enough set of factors, apparently. In addition
(and that is a separate problem) I have noticed that
homogeneous tests are a preferred target for frauds,
which makes then non-robust. For these reasons I have
stopped administrating homogeneous tests, and do not
use the term “I.Q.” for a score on such a test.

What is the importance of beta testers and
how do you filter out careless submissions? Are
serious test takers something positive and are
they important in establishing test norms? On
the other hand, what effect do undisciplined and
careless test takers have on the norms when
they don’t give their best? Is taking a high range
tests on a regular basis, test by test, year by year,
something that is good or bad? As we know,
high range tests are very addictive, you even
placed a warning on your web page saying as
much. Is extreme test taking as bad for health as
professional sports are?
I do not know the concept of “beta testers”, but if
meant is the first people who try a test, the following
can be said: It is best to start out with an actual test
that gives scores and may be used for society admission,
rather than an experimental set of problems from
which a test my be formed later. This way, people have
a motivation to do their best. Careless submissions are
not good as they give a false impression of the statistical
behaviour of the problems, especially the difficulty.
Careless submissions would cause norms to become
too high, obviously. The reward of a score and possible
admission reduce careless submissions, as does the
requirement to pay a fee (or to show proof of identity).
I do not filter out existing test submissions afterwards,
except when they turn out fraudulent. Recently it
happened that two friends of a candidate informed me
that the candidate had taken a certain test of mine twice
under different names, and they gave those names too. I
had already noticed some similarity between those sets
of answers, and could thus clean it up. I made a note to
be able to recognize that candidate if he tries to order a
test again.
It has also happened that another test author informed
me of fraud by a certain person on one of this author’s
tests, and I made a note of that. Later, that person tried
to order one of my tests, and I refused to send it. I
always consult a database with names before sending
someone a test.

A test should initially be long enough to retain
sufficient reliability and validity in case some of its
problems turn out bad and unusable. In this respect
it is good to know that reliability and validity increase
in proportion with the square root of test length, all
other circumstances remaining the same.
Extreme or very frequent test taking is not bad for
the health of healthy persons, but can be dangerous
for people who are disposed to develop psychosis. It
may trigger a psychotic episode. Another example of
unhealthy test-taking behaviour concerns young people
with psychosocial problems who think that a very high
I.Q. score will solve their problems by “proving” that
there is nothing wrong with them other than having
a high I.Q. This is misdirected effort in my opinion;
the true cause of psychosocial problems tends to lie
elsewhere, like in psychiatric or neurological conditions
separate from intelligence. My observation is that a
high I.Q. in itself causes no psychosocial problems; I
know that many like to believe otherwise.
What is the average career length of a test taker
in the harsh world of IQ testing? Do you have
some kind of data? In some sports it is expected
that sportsman will compete, on the highest level,
no more than 3 Olympic cycles. Do we have that
kind of limit in the world of high range tests with
some people coming, spending a few years and
never coming back again? It’s very rare to stay on
top for a decade.
I do not have data on that, but would point out that
the limited number of available tests determines partly
how long a candidate can stay active. If you have taken
all of my tests that appeal to you, you will have to wait
some years until a new test becomes available. There
are numerous candidates who keep taking tests for
well over a decade, but eventually there is much time
between their submissions because they have taken
about all of the tests already.

What we are witnessing today is that certain
members of the high range testing community are
trying to improve their scores by use of forbidden
means, to name just a few: teamwork, fishing
for answers in forums, using multiple aliases and
accounts on online tests, sharing answers, use
of buddy-buddy relations between test takers
and test makers, making a test under a different
name and then “scoring high” on that same test
etc . In your novel Field of Eternal Integrity you
are dealing with question of morality and moral
standards in the high range community in an
allegorical way. Can you tell us your opinion about
the need of establishing a penal system in the
high range world with the base of offenders? Do
you believe in giving a second chance to someone
who broke the rules of conduct in HR tests? Is
corruption in HR world something widespread
and something that will always be present?
The reasons why this kind of behaviour is harmful are
explained in my article “Reasons not to spread test
answers”. Individual test creators and societies should
maintain a list of offenders known to them so that they
can take measures when needed. Whether a collective
penal system should or can be developed is less certain;
for reasons explained in my other article, “Individualism:
the plague of the high-I.Q. community”, such is unlikely
to succeed. High-I.Q. people tend never to agree on
anything. Some offenders are actually hailed as geniuses
in high-I.Q. circles. The most visible part of the high-I.Q.
community is infested with swindlers.
A second chance should be given only to young
first offenders, like under twenty-one. Sense of
responsibility develops late, and more intelligent people
need more time to reach maturity.
Corruption is as widespread as are bad people. I do
not believe it will always be present; if you remove the
bad people, which I recommend, you are rid of almost
all corruption, crime, and evil.

Nothing and no one can control what test makers
do, with their norms and with the scores they give
to people who take their tests. Theoretically, test
authors can give any score they find fit to anyone.
They can lower the score of someone they don’t
like, or they can give the highest possible score to
someone they do like. Today, almost anybody can
create a high range test. What control mechanism
do we need to establish in order to prevent
possible manipulations of norms and to prevent
false test scores given by the authors themselves?
. We are not only seeing a boom in the number of
high range tests, we’re also seeing a boom in the
number of high IQ societies. What do you think is
the purpose of membership in multiple High I.Q.
Societies? What do you think should be the role
of a high I.Q. society?
I am not in favour of such a control mechanism. Test
authors are free to do their job badly, and candidates
with bad experiences are free to stop taking that
author’s tests, and to share their bad experiences. I
think that natural mechanism suffices.
Regarding the purpose of membership in multiple
I.Q. societies, I suspect that people are hoping to
find a place where they belong, a place that enables
them to develop or improve themselves in either
material or immaterial fields. I am afraid I.Q. societies
are often disappointing in that respect, for reasons as
explained in my aforementioned article “Individualism:
the plague of the high-I.Q. community”. What I.Q.
societies do quite well, in my experience, is to offer (1)
opportunities for communication with other intelligent
individuals, and (2) fora for verbatim, unedited,
uncensored publication of one’s work. I believe those
functions should be kept up, despite the fact that
Internet and social media provide the same nowadays,
and often better. Especially (2) is vital, in the light of
the increasing censorship on the social media, which
are slowly turning into mainstream media in terms of
political bias.

Over the decades, I have been thinking a lot about
how I.Q. societies could offer ways of self-improvement
or learning, other than by the two points mention
above, but have not succeeded. Any road to personal
development entails some kind of choice, of preferring
one direction over another, of losing your neutrality,
and the high-I.Q. world is so diverse that any choice
you make will always be objected to by a significant
proportion of the members.
What do you think is the reason so many highly
intelligent people cannot find motivation for
something other than solving IQ tests and joining
multiple societies? Michael W. Feregusson in
his article Inappropriately Excluded claims: “[a]
significant percentage of people with IQs over
140 are being systematically and, most likely,
inappropriately excluded from the population that
addresses the biggest problems of our time.” Are
highly intelligent people their own worst enemies?
Is their passivity and being uninterested in the
word around them their own mistake? Is there
anything we can do to activate their potential?
How can you motivate someone in general?
I do not share the observation that many highly
intelligent people do nothing but take tests and join
societies. I have seen many highly intelligent people
who do well and are successful in real life, regardless
of whether or not they are also active in the high-I.Q.
world. There are indeed individuals in the high-I.Q.
scene who seem to do little in the outer world, but
(1) not all of those are truly intelligent and (2) some of
them have problems or impairments that prevent their
functioning in the outer world so that they have to find
a niche that allows them to express themselves. Case
(2) has nothing to do with lack of motivation, and case
(1) is a result of the inflated admission policies of some
I.Q. societies.
So no, highly intelligent people are not their own worst
enemies, they are not passive and uninterested, and
we do not need to activate their potential or motivate
them. What is the case is that the highly intelligent tend

to function best when working on their own; in groups,
in cooperation, intelligence is recessive, and the output
is determined by the least intelligent member of the
group. Another problem is that the academic world
today suffers from a species of confirmation bias and
excludes those who disagree with the ruling paradigms.
But they are excluded for dissenting, not for being
intelligent. Over the course of the twentieth century,
hostile intellectual movements of a crypto-political,
pseudoscientific nature have occupied part of the
scientific world, so that much of what is now presented
to us as established science is in fact political doctrine
and propaganda. Kevin MacDonald’s book “The culture
of critique” deals with this development, which is part
of the broader phenomenon of cultural Marxism.
Many intelligent people suffer from disorders in
the autism spectrum, Asperger’s Syndrome being
first among them. Is Asperger’s a hallmark of
genius? Or is being a genius simply an anomaly
that nature takes care of by itself?
I strongly contradict the statement that many intelligent
people have disorders in the autism spectrum. Some
have mild features of it, a dash of autism perhaps, and
could be said to have Asperger syndrome or schizoid
personality. Actual autism is a serious disorder that
one does not want to suffer from, and that mostly
goes with being mentally handicapped in addition. I
find it regrettable that the Asperger diagnosis has been
abolished and it is now all called “autism spectrum”.
I believe there is a sort of activism behind that
development, a desire to regard autism as an identity
rather than a disorder, similar to what has been done
with homosexuality in the past. I have observed this in
the early 2000s on a forum for persons with autism
spectrum disorders. A certain faction on the forum
stubbornly denied the existence of any gradations in
autism and was thus violently opposed to the Asperger
diagnosis as a differentiation from classical autism.
This lobby appears to have succeeded in getting the
diagnostic manual changed according to their view. It
is correct that some of the Asperger/schizoid features

are hallmarks of genius; this concerns traits in the
realms of conscientiousness and associative horizon.
Combined with intelligence, these engage in an synergy,
resulting in genius. An important observation of mine,
which has held up for a few decades, is the negative
correlation of Aspergoid traits with intelligence. Either
they reduce one’s intelligence, primarily in the spatial,
temporal, and performance aspects, or intelligence
suppresses their expression (but probably the former is
true). This is so important because it explains the rarity
of genius: if things correlate negatively, it will be rare
to find them combined to a high degree in one and
the same individual! I use the word “Aspergoid” as a
contraction of “Asperger/schizoid” by the way, and that
latter term, in turn, is from Sula Wolf ’s book “Loners”.
Wolf has studied schizoid children, and believed those
to be same group diagnosed by others with Asperger
syndrome. Her book, together with Hans Asperger’s
article “Die ‘Autistischen Psychopathen’ im Kindesalter”,
forms the most interesting literature I know regarding
Asperger syndrome.
For a long time, we were hearing people in the
media say that the most intelligent people are
not spiritual at all; that they’re atheists. However,
when interviewed, some of the most intelligent
people in the world have proven to the opposite
to be true. Werner Heisenberg once said, “The
first gulp from the glass of natural sciences will
turn you into an atheist, but at the bottom
of the glass God is waiting for you”. What is
your experience with test takers who openly
admit they believe in God? do you believe that
Heisenberg was correct?
I have never noticed test takers “admitting” they
believed in God, and that is probably so because belief
in God is so common and socially accepted that there
is no need to “admit” it. Atheism, on the other hand,
is taboo in many circles, where it is associated with
immorality, so that takes some courage to openly
admit to. Highly intelligent people may just not be too
keen to publicly state they are atheists. They may say
otherwise for reasons of social desirability or national/

ethnic identification. I can not think of any who belong
to the most intelligent in the world and have stated
they believe in God. Of course, in my position I am,
more than others, able to identify the megalomanic
narcissists who claim the highest I.Q.’s in the world
based on fraudulent scores.
I would interpret a quotation like that of Heisenberg
in the sense that science has not answered all of our
questions yet, and that some mysteries remain. But to
replace “mystery” by “God” is just a manner of speech
and not helpful.
Also, “spiritual” is not the same as “religious”. An atheist
may be deeply spiritual.
In one of your interviews you mentioned that you
have a Christian, Catholic family background. Can
you tell us a little bit more about your view on
religion in general and the development of your
personal spiritual life?
What I find offensive about religion is its inherent claim
that the belief in God is needed to be ethical, to know
what is right and wrong. In reality, ethics is about logic,
and someone capable of logic tends to have inner
ethics as a result and will not need to be told what
is right. Now it is so that the majority of people are
not capable of logic and therefore lack inner ethics;
those require external guidance to know what is good
and bad, and I will confess that religion can play a role
there, together with education, peer group, and the
judicial system.
Another aspect of religion is its relation to nation
and ethnicity. National pride and ethnocentrism
make people identify with with their native religion,
regardless of whether they personally believe in God.
This is quite obvious in most non-Western cultures,
and can also be observed today in “alt right” or “White
pride” circles, where Christianity is popular and there is
a notion that the Christian religion is needed as an ally
against the contemporary attacks on Western culture
and the White race.

Regarding my personal spiritual life, it depends on how
you interpret the word “spiritual”. If it is purely about
religious or supernatural matters like the soul or God,
there has not been much development. Whenever
religious or esoteric movements or cults came on
my path, I quickly recognized them as hollow, empty,
disappointing. I have been fascinated for some time by
the numerological symbolism that, according to some,
can be found in J.S. Bach’s music (predicting the date of
his death decades beforehand) but it did not convince
me in the end. What did have a thorough influence on
me was Douglas R. Hofstadter’s book “Gödel, Escher,
Bach”, and the views on the nature of awareness
expressed in it. That is the closest thing to “spiritual” I
have seen and greatly outmatches anything religious
or esoteric.
When “spiritual” is taken in a broader sense as dealing
with immaterial matters and values, I am fully spiritual
in that I am dedicated to truth and righteousness. But
that has no relation to God or the supernatural for me,
and it is also not a development, as I have always been
that way. It comes from within.
Finally I want to add that when I hear people speak of
spiritual or religious experiences they have had, I get
a distinct impression they really mean a type of deep
relaxation or meditative state that overcomes many at
times, including myself, but that not everyone interprets
in the same way. Some connect it to religion, others
call it relaxation, meditation, or enlightenment.
Beside I.Q. tests, you are also interested in
other topics, one of them being the effects of
moral degradation on the future, and society in
general. Today we are witnessing the promotion
of unhealthy liberal ideologies and lifestyles,
homosexualism, pederasty, transgenderism,
prostitution, euthanasia, suicide, abortion,
extreme feminism, and atheism. These ideologies
are promoted from the highest places of power
where extreme amounts of money is being
invested. What do you think is the ultimate goal of
the cultural and ideological colonization that we
are witnessing today? What can be done about it?

The goal of this colonization is to acquire full domination
of the world, after which a small and infinitely wealthy
elite will parasitize on the remaining human population,
which they regard as a slave labour force consisting of a
lower species. In order to achieve this, all nation states
except their own will have to be destroyed and replaced
by multicultural, multiracial zoos deprived of any national
or ethnic identity. This multiple genocide is at risk of
succeeding since they own and control most of the vital
institutions and industries, rendering it dangerous to
criticize or resist them, or even to mention them other
than in abundant praise.
What can be done about it is the ham question, as we
say here after a radio quiz from the 1950s wherein
the prize for the winner was a smoked ham, to be
collected from the top of a high mast. It is crucial to
retain free, uncensored communication channels and
publication fora so that people can be informed of
what is going on. The invader is doing all he can to
prevent that. The peaceful solution - reclaiming one’s
country through democratic procedures - is failing.
Anti-immigration parties are almost systematically
excluded from government participation, have
problems getting qualified politicians because no
one likes to be dragged to court for “racism” and
“discrimination”, and can not be explicit about their
goals as it is punishable in many places to speak
about these things. This is undemocratic and provokes
violence, currently in the form of terrorist attacks from
so-called “far right” individuals, later as all-out civil wars.
The critical stage will be when Whites are approaching
minority positions in their own countries. When that
point passes, democratic solutions are out of the
question and only violence remains. Up to that point,
there will be increasing opposition. Some say that
certain countries are already lost. I would not go as far
as that, but it does seem that some countries are too
far gone to be reclaimed democratically and peacefully.

Interview with Patrick O'Shea

You are a Knight of The Equestrian Order of the
Holy Sepulcher. Can you tell us a little about that
order? How did you earn your title and what was
the admission procedure? Can anyone become a
a Knight?
The EOHSJ has its origins in the First Crusade,
initially as a knighthood organized among those
who protected the site of the Holy Sepulcher
in Jerusalem, and later conferred on noblemen
making a pilgrimage to Jerusalem by the custodian
of the Church of the Holy Sepulcher. This practice
continued throughout the Middle Ages and down
to modern times, but was regularized with the re-
establishment of the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem
in the mid-19th century, when new statutes were
promulgated for the Order. At that time, the Pope
himself was Grand Master of the Order, but that
dignity is now entrusted to a Cardinal of the Roman
Catholic Church. The modern mission of the Order
is to suppor t the Church in the Holy Land, funding
a university, many schools, and medical facilities,
par ticularly for the Christian community.
I became a knight in 2009, after a process of
candidacy. The Order is open to men and women
of the Roman Catholic faith, both lay and religious,
who are sponsored by a member, approved by their
bishop, and who wish to support the work of the
Order in the Holy Land.
You are also a Marquis and Count of The Holy
Roman Empire (1679). That’s a very interesting
title. Can you tell us something more that title,
your family background and lineage?
My ancestor, Dominick White (mayor of Limerick,
Ireland, in 1636) was ennobled, along with (and at the
behest of) his more famous son, Ignatius White, by
the Holy Roman Emperor Leopold I in 1679. Ignatius
White, who bore the title Marquis of Albeville (or
Albyville) and Count of Alby per these letters patent
was Secretary of State to James II of England, and
ultimately went into exile with him to France, where
he died in 1694. His grandson (and thus my 2nd cousin

8x removed), Antoine de Sartine, was Minister of the
Marine for Louis XVI, and used the title Count of Alby
inherited from his mother, but had no successors,
as his only son was arrested and executed during
the Reign of Terror. Through somewhat unusual and
idiosyncratic language in the letters patent (which
survive in a Spanish translation of 1724 in the Archivo
Historico Nacional in Madrid), the titles Marquis
of Albyville, Count of Alby, along with Marquis and
Count of the Holy Roman Empire, are made to
descend to all descendants, male and female, and all
of their descendants of either sex, of both Dominick
and Ignatius White. The line passes through Simon
White of Knocksentry, brother to Ignatius (and also
ancestor of the Earls of Bantry), down to my 5th great
grandmother, Rebecca White of Mantle Hill and then
through the Smithwick and Wayland families to my
O’Shea line. Given the origin of the titles and the fact
that they are meant to honor the recipients’ protection
of the Catholic faith, it is my opinion that they are
really only appropriately applicable to practicing Roman
Catholic descendants of the grantees.
For all that, most of my ancestry consists of rather
humble immigrants to America from Ireland and
Quebec,with a few old New England lines thrown
in, including two Mayflower passenger families. It’s an
interesting mix. And, of course, there is a limited value
in claiming titles arising from a political entity that
ceased to exist in 1806!
You are a professor at Saint Mary’s University in
Minnesota. What are your duties as a professor,
and do you find your job fulfilling? Have you ever
dreamt about doing something entirely different
with your career?
I am a professor in the Music Department, where I
direct two academic choirs, teach voice, and teach
classes in music history, vocal literature, and vocal
pedagogy. I have always had a very deep love of choral
music, and from the time I was about 16, I have been
focused on precisely this sort of career. I have many
diverse interests, but music has always risen to the top
as the one thing I cannot live without.

You are a composer. Can you tell us where you
find inspiration for your music and where we can
find your work, such as a web address or iTunes?
Inspiration does come, but more often one simply
has to sit down and force one’s self to write. I would
say that the best motivation is having a commission
to write a particular piece for a specific occasion and/
or ensemble. I am very much drawn to the rhythm,
inflection, and meaning of texts, and I suppose this is
why most of my works are choral or vocal, and my
instrumental music has a “singing” quality as well. Many

You run your own webpage/blog, www.poshea.
com. The webpage looks very nice, with lots of
information about your choir and music. Can
you tell us something about your other projects
involving music?
About half of my instructional time at the university
is taken up with conducting - about six hours per
week in rehearsals. In addition, I’ve just launched a new
community choir here in the city of Winona, Minnesota,
which is another 90-minute evening rehearsal weekly.
I truly enjoy history, and thus teaching the two-
semester music history sequence for music majors at
the university is very rewarding.
You are a member of ISPE, the oldest 99.9% high
IQ society in the world and the third oldest high
IQ society after Mensa. Can you tell us something
about your duties in this organization, former
and present, and how you came to be a member
in the first place?
I was President of ISPE for two terms (2008-2014),
and before that served as editor of TELICOM, the
society’s journal. I first learned of ISPE through a friend
who shared my interest in heraldry, and he suggested
I apply. At that time, I had never taken an IQ test with
sufficient selectivity to demonstrate a 99.9th percentile
result, but encouraged by this invitation, I took the
WAIS-III, and was able to qualify. Through ISPE, I have

met quite a few truly fascinating individuals and made
lasting friendships. At the moment, other than the
title of Past President, I have no specific duties, but do
confer with the current President as he wishes, and of
course, enjoy the journal TELICOM, which is excellent
and engaging.
You are father of five children. Can you tell us
something about your daily routine? I would
imagine one needs to be well organized when
juggling between a large family and a career.
I could tell you that this is always delightful, but that
would not be entirely honest. Raising five children is
challenging, and my wife Lindsy has a far better grasp
of their constantly changing needs and activities. She is
also a musician (a soprano, who teaches voice part-
time at the university), but is the one primarily at
home for them. As academics, we are very fortunate
to be able to alternate somewhat with our schedules,
avoiding the need for daycare and relying on a modest
amount of in-home child care - mostly provided by
university students. It is Lindsy who quite literally makes
my ongoing career possible while making sure our
children have what they need. For my part, I try always
to be around in the evenings to assist with bed time,
and in the mornings, I am the “lunch chef,” making and
packing lunches for the ones of school age before they
get on the bus. Four of our five are now in school all
day (my daughters in grades 5, 4, 2, and kindergarten).
My son is 3, and attends an early childhood program
one day per week with Lindsy.
I suppose we are as organized as we need to be to
accomplish this on a daily basis, but there are certainly
times where it feels like utter chaos. All of my children
are energetic extroverts. I am not an extrovert.
Sometimes they can be overwhelming, but they can
also be incredibly kind and good, and being a father is
without a doubt the best thing I have done in my life.
You scored very highly on WAIS, one of the
most famous professionally administered
standardized I.Q. tests. Have you ever tried
a high-range I.Q. test? What is your opinion
of the world of high-range testing and the
organizations within that world?

I think Wechsler himself made a very valid point when
he capped the original WAIS at IQ 150, and in later
editions capped the full IQ at 155+. Beyond this,
there are concerns he had about correlating general
intelligence (g) with the small sample size of those
having such extreme results. I am not a psychometrist, so
I cannot offer a professional or especially authoritative
opinion on the validity of the so-called “high ceiling”
IQ tests that have been developed, but I do think
that Wechsler’s point was salient, particularly in the
context of his test, which was intended to be a clinical
instrument for testing throughout the cognitive range.
You are one of the founders and Vice Presidents
of Catholiq High Society, as well as the
webmaster and admin of the Catholiq webpage
and Facebook group. Do you think this Society
has a purpose? Are we on the right track? What
can we do to make this little organization bigger,
more serious, more attractive and more visible?
Well, as an introvert, I suppose that public relations
is not my strength, but I would think that a journal
presenting topics of interest on the convergence of the
Catholic and Hi-IQ worlds is important. This helps to
raise both the visibility of the society and underlines
the quality and seriousness of thought of its members.
The Catholic Church has had a long and important
intellectual tradition. Certainly, a Catholic High-IQ
society can help to illustrate this fact, and can serve
as an active extension of it. I think there is also much
value in demonstrating that Catholics are not backward
or anti-science, as so much stereotyping suggests.
You are a Christian, a Catholic. Can you tell
us something more about your religious and
spiritual life? What do you think about the
importance of faith in our lives?
I think faith, and in particular the capacity for reverence,
is very important to our overall well-being. In an
increasingly cynical world, we lose the ability to regard
things with awe, whether that be the beauty of nature,
of art, or the elegance of a mathematical proof or the
genius of a scientific discovery. For me, I feel centered
and connected through he practice of my faith. To use
a musical term, the liturgical calendar and the Mass

are important cadences that lend form and structure
to my life and that of my family. And I also find that
the Catholic faith is of great value in transmitting the
importance of ethical behavior to my children. One
can be ethical without religion, but I believe that there
is more than just acting ethically. Perhaps it is the
ineffable and inexplicable way that music moves me
that leads to the knowledge that there is more to us
than a limited biological existence.
You are an American and a patriot. Your family
fought in wars and weapons aren’t unknown
to you. Can you tell us something about your
military education and training? People seem
to see you in two different lights: the peaceful
family-man and the military macho-man. Do you
find these perceptions to be accurate? Are they
mutually exclusive?
I accepted a state (not federal) military commission
in a unit in South Carolina not long after the 9/11
attacks here in the US. I have never been a “macho
military man,” and, indeed, the unit I served was
effectively a “think tank” for the Adjutant General of
South Carolina. We worked on disaster preparedness,
terrorism scenarios, and research having to do with
readying service members in the National Guard to
serve in Afghanistan and Iraq from the perspective
of understanding the culture context into which they
would be deployed. I think most Americans were
looking for a way to serve meaningfully after 9/11,
and I was very fortunate to have been recruited by
a friend who was being put in command of this unit,
the Special Operations and Advisory Group. I think
we did some useful work. It was also a means of
appreciating the culture of service and honor of the
US military, and it was an opportunity to tell some
decision makers a number of things that they didn’t
necessarily want to hear.

Besides music, you seem to be interested
in other topics. I see you regularly follow
information about hurricanes. When did your
interest in meteorology begin? What is your
opinion about climate change and global warming
in general? Do you think global warming is a
reality or just a political hoax?
I believe the scientific consensus on climate change is
nearing unanimity. We must work to mitigate it, but we
must also admit that it is too late to avert it, and plan
for a world that will go through relatively rapid change
in the next century. It is frustrating to me that there
are so-called leaders who lack the political will to face
this reality, and to do the important work of educating
those they purport to lead about what must be done.
My interest in hurricanes seems to have arisen from
the fact that my mother lived in Florida from the early
1990s until she passed away in 2015. I began to track
tropical storms during that time, and have continued
to monitor them - both because the phenomenon is
complex and interesting (especially computer modeling
of storm tracks), and because I think the change in
tropical weather tendencies is symptomatic of wider
climate change.
One of your passions is also politics. This last
question will be somewhat different from the
previous questions and I invite you to answer
sincerely. The world’s perception of America
(USA) has changed during the last several
decades. I would say it started to change during
the presidency of George H. W. Bush. The years
after the fall of the Berlin Wall were years of
absolute American domination in the world.
America became the only superpower. But
something happened - they say absolute power
corrupts. Instead of a proliferation of prosperity
and freedom, America became culpable for:
1. Endless wars (Afghanistan, Libya, Iraq...)
2. Economic crises (1998 global financial crisis,
the 2001 and 2007 recessions, the tariff wars
of 2019 and a potential economic crisis in
2020)

3. Extreme, naturalistic and liberal ideological
colonization through the promotion of:
homosexualism, pederasty, transgenderism,
prostitution, euthanasia, suicide, senicide,

4. Support of terrible regimes that violate
human rights (I won’t mention them here).
Quo Vadis America? Is there a hope for America
and the world? What needs to be done? What can
an ordinary man do?
I would like to respond to each of the above four
points individually:
The “endless wars” referenced are a result of military
action without a clear understanding of context and
lacking a defined end state. One cannot achieve
“success” when success has not been defined.
The history is long and complex, but a few key
observations sum up my overall view: The strike on
Al Qaeda and the Taliban that protected them in
Afghanistan was justified. The war in Iraq was, however,
predicated on faulty intelligence and a rush to dislodge
Saddam Hussein without adequate consideration of
linkage to terrorism (which was dubious) and the
reality of ethnic divisions within Iraq and regional
implications. And, to mobilize for Iraq, assets were
withdrawn or diverted from Afghanistan, leading to a
lingering stalemate that yet continues. I am less familiar
with the situation in Libya, but that situation also
strikes me as more a pursuit of political goals driven by
ideology rather than any pragmatic understanding of
how best to help the Libyan people. America can be a
significant force for stability in the world, but to do so
it must return to the ideals that governed its behavior
before the 9/11 attacks. In a cruel irony, the terrorists
who attacked us on 9/11 are succeeding in the most
devastating of ways: they are changing in a fundamental
way who we are and how we see ourselves in the
world. We cannot afford to hand them that victory.
Since the last recession, there has been a very long
period of economic expansion. This is now imperiled
by capricious trade policies and a transactional
approach to nearly all aspects of American foreign

policy. This is a grave error, in my opinion. American
policy must be guided by ideals, not by financial gain for
a small percentage of its citizens. I believe capitalism has
improved the lives of people generally, but it does so
unevenly, and if not restrained, it is also has a significant
potential to devastate peoples and nations who are,
for whatever reason, at an economic disadvantage.
In addition, capitalism is a mechanism for generating
profit for business entities and for individuals. It is thus
inherently incongruent with operating for the good
of society, because often the pursuit of a societal
good limits short-term profit potential. And there are
national and international challenges that governments
must empowered and encouraged to address without
the fear of disappointing stock holders. My ancestor,
the legal scholar and social theorist François Hotman,
held as a guiding principle a saying by Cicero: Salus
populi lex suprema esto. (Let the welfare of the people
be the supreme law.) I believe that this must be the
touchstone that we return to when devising social and
economic policy.
That seems a rather long list of things to hang around
the neck of the United States alone, so I initially reject
the notion that this list is somehow emblematic of
American culture. America is a pluralistic society, and
as such one’s individual faith, however deeply held, may
not be imposed on others. If one sees behavior that is
deemed damaging to the social fabric, one has the right
to say as much. The issues you list are varied and, in
my opinion, not really related, and I will not be drawn
into assembling them as a list of “symptoms” of some
pervasive moral decay. To do so would equate them
and brand them all as equally “evil” or unacceptable.
This is, at best, an oversimplification that does a
disservice to serious consideration of those issues. At
worst, it gives license to stereotyping, bigotry, and fear
mongering. For example, genetic research increasingly
correlates homosexuality with particular genotypes
affecting multiple chromosomes. This is hardly
surprising, since many traits are affected by not one
but a constellation of genetic markers. (Eye color alone
has been linked to some 40 genetic markers with
significant correlation.) Simply lumping homosexuality
in with other issues and labeling all of them evil ignores
the developing understanding of that particular state -

and I use the word “state” intentionally, as increasingly
it seems clear that homosexuality is at least partially
a genetic fact or a predisposition and not a mere
choice. This, of course, means that homosexuality
as a phenomenon predates the United States - on
a evolutionary rather than historical time scale. As
intelligent people, we are more able than most to
consider complex ideas and to tolerate disparate and
sometimes conflicting information. Some issues are
clear, because the harm they do is readily evident.
Some are not. And some require reevaluation in the
light of new information. There are those who will
accuse me of moral relativism or a lack of resolve to
uphold moral principles. So be it, but I consider the
unwillingness to engage intellectually and in good faith
with difficult topics to be the greater failing.
The history of the United States with respect to
supporting authoritarian and even brutal regimes is
certainly not one of consistent ethical grounding. We
have gone through periods where principles were
adhered to with relative fidelity, and periods where
transactional politics and turning a blind eye toward
the trampling of human rights was considered a
“necessary evil.” I think the United States is at its best
when it insists that nations respect human rights - and
when it holds firmly to this in its own conduct. I fear
that we are experiencing a time when our leaders have
failed in both these external and internal tests, and I
pray that we shall return to those principles before the
wider world loses faith in the fundamental goodness
of the United States. I still believe that this is the core
of America’s identity. I believe that it will be restored in
the eyes of the world.

Christianity, Then and Now

Introduction:
In this essay, I want to explore the very essence of
the Christian religion. Let us discover, perhaps for the
first time, what Christ intended for His Church when
He came in the form of man, to change the course of
human history, forever.
First, it’s necessary to establish some premises, or the
basic building blocks of our discussion. This essay is not
going to try to ‘prove’ the existence of God, or even
try to convince the reader that the Christian God is
the one true God. We can’t boil an ocean. For the
purposes of this essay, I’m taking the following as fact:
There is one, triune God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
God the Father sent His only begotten Son in the form
of a man, to Earth, to save mankind from sin1. Jesus is
that son. The Holy Scripture (Old Testament and New
Testament) was written by men who were inspired by
the Holy Spirit; therefore, the true author of Scripture
is God. God is the source of all Truth, therefore the
Scriptures are true.
So really this essay begins with a question: why did
Jesus take the form of man, call to himself the Apostles,
and suffer death only to resurrect three days later
and ascend into Heaven until his second coming? I
imagine this all sounds rather meta-religious, but these
are the derivatives that propel much of the Christian
theology and make up salvific history. I think the
world has sequestered itself into two bodies, those
who reject Christianity and those who have already
accepted it. The former are necessarily out of scope
of this essay and the latter come in various degrees

of conviction. One thing is generally true, that people
who have accepted Christianity tend to think of
themselves as having already arrived at a destination.
There seems to be a predisposition to become
satiated in our beliefs, to be too sure of oneself to
listen to opposing viewpoints. But it is only through this
constant interrogation of truth that we arrive at Truth.
A principle that I adopted when I was in high school
has proven to be the most beneficial epistemological
principle in my life: if you want to know if something
is true, try to break it. I was able to break a lot of
adolescent, preconceived notions of the world, but
Catholicism remained unscathed. There hasn’t been a
single question or challenge that I have had, or heard,
that wasn’t able to be completely answered by the
established Teachings of the Church. Together, let’s
challenge our beliefs, as Christ challenged His apostles,
and let us have the courage to face what comes of it!
I.
Why did God the Father send his only begotten Son
to suffer death as man? The Sunday-school reflex is
‘to save mankind from sin’. And that’s true, but not
the whole truth. The notion of Christ’s death being
necessary to save all of mankind throughout all of
eternity simply isn’t supported in the Scriptures and
isn’t logical. What mechanism would God need to
forgive all of mankind? What does God need? Nothing.
He is entirely self-sufficient and self-sustaining. So why
not just forgive mankind by virtue of His Divine Will?
He who created the Universe and man can surly
forgive them just as easily.
If you find yourself resisting this line of inquiry
but aren’t sure why, it’s because it goes against a
commonly accepted precept of a majority of Christian
denominations; one that people have been taught

with the same confidence as Jesus being a Nazarian.
Regardless if you hold this to be true or not, let’s
challenge it and see if it holds water: why did Jesus
have to become man and suffer the Passion to save
mankind? Is it because God was unable to do it by His
will alone? The most basic understanding of Christian
theology answers with a resounding ‘no’. By asserting
that as true, we would necessarily be placing constraints
on God’s omnipotence. Was it because man needed
Christ to be saved? Men aren’t omnipotent, we certainly
have limitations, needing God’s assistance in our
salvation doesn’t pose any immediately obvious logical
contradictions.Yet, as I write this, I can feel some readers
fortifying their defenses. Is it enough for God to have
died for us to have been saved? How does the death
of Christ help us? Any answer that doesn’t involve man
is erroneous for reasons preestablished. To say Jesus’
Passion had eternal consequences is true, but to say that
it was all that’s necessary is the lie that is leading many
to destruction.
I’ll quit playing the role of Socrates and put on the
inevitable hat of didacticism. God sent His only
begotten Son to redeem mankind from sin and to
establish His Church. His Church is Christ’s body on
Earth, it is the vehicle by which we come to Him. To
say we don’t need it is to say Christ needn’t have
died. This is a truth that is understandably hard to
accept, because the logical conclusions are impossible
to ignore. The difficulty isn’t because it doesn’t make
sense, it’s because it necessitates our conformity to
the truth.2

II.
Why was it necessary for Christ to establish a Church
to save mankind from sin? Man is subject to change.
Our wills are malleable and impermanent, so long as
we live on this Earth. One of the greatest gifts given to
man is our free will. It is the mode in which we love,
for all love is choice, and true love is God. Christs’ life
not only taught us what it means to love, how to live
that love, it established a way for us to continue to
participate in his love and grace, well after His ‘time’ on
Earth. The Church is His body on Earth, establishing for
us a path through the tortuous and treacherous terrain
of the fallen world.
There is a lot there, and I didn’t pad it with clauses, so
I understand any incredulity. But stay with me as I try
to unpack it. First, we need to dissect free will. There
are few Christians who still believe in determinism
and predestination, the notion that we have no free
will and everything that happens in our life is already
set in stone. Their reasoning is that God knows
everything, including the future. If something is known
to God, it exists. If it already exists, what can be done
about it? There are several problems with this line of
reasoning. First, just because God knows something
will happen doesn’t necessitate a lack of participation
on our part. Second, the message of the Gospel
becomes meaningless without free will. If everything
we will do is already decided, how would it be just
to punish us for our actions3? Why would Jesus waste
his time teaching us His way if we couldn’t choose
it? How could the following verses of the bible make
sense without free will?

be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their
cross and follow me.” Mt 16:24
“Whoever chooses to do his will shall know whether
my teaching is from God or whether I speak on my
own.” John 7:17
“Who is the one who fears the Lord? God shows him
the way he should choose.” Ps 25:12
Saint Augustine wrote eloquently on this subject in
On the Free Choice of the Will4. In an excerpt from
his work seen below, Augustine is in dialogue with
his friend, Evodius, who is challenging Augustine on
whether men truly have free will,
Augustine: So tell me this: Do we have a will?
Evodius: I don’t know.
Augustine: Do you want to know?
Evodius: I don’t know that either.
Augustine: Then don’t ask me any
more questions.
Here, Saint Augustine rightly demonstrates that free
will is so self-evident, that trying to prove it is absurd. I
think the above should be enough reason to convince
a dubious reader of free will, but if you find yourself
unconvinced, I urge you to read On the Free Choice of
the Will. It is extensive and at a much higher level of
philosophical proof than this essay is intended to be.

Given that we have free will, what are the
consequences, and what does it have to do with the
Church? For as long as we live, we have free will. Once
we die, we do not. A change in choice is limited to time,
we must be able to exist in a sequence for us to change
from one decision to another, and once we die, we
are outside of time. This is why the angels were able to
make a single choice, follow God or revolt. Some chose
God, others did not, and they are forever cemented
in their decision. This is also why, when Jesus spoke to
demons, He didn’t appeal to them- He commanded
them. There was nothing to be done for them.
Viewing human history through this lens, we see a
dichotomy of enteral significance. Everything comes
down to what someone has chosen at the time of
their death. God has given you the ability to love Him
and grow in love for Him, to persevere in perfection.
But that choice necessitates an alternative, choosing
ourselves over God. Free will is an instrument, and
whether it is used for our destruction or salvation is up
to us.
But how are we to know what God wants for us?
What does it mean to choose God? How are we
supposed to take the words of Scripture, written two
thousand years ago and apply it to our lives today?
And how are we supposed to do that when we are
so obviously prone to selfishness? God, in His infinite
wisdom, knew that mankind needed more than the
ability to choose Him, we needed a guide to show us
how. For this reason, God gave us the Church.

III.
How does the Church provide a means of salvation
for man? To answer this question, one must first
understand what the Church is and how it came to be.
In Matthew 16:18, Jesus says “And I tell you that you
are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my Church…”.
Think about this imperative. Jesus renames Simon to
Peter and by renaming him, Christ is changing Simon’s
calling, his purpose5. He is designating him to be the
foundation of the Church, which Christ will build upon.
In this statement we are told two truths: that Christ is
the founder of the Church and that He chose to build
it upon the foundation of a man. What Jesus doesn’t
say here is as important as what He does say. He
doesn’t address his disciples in a public way, he doesn’t
even address every apostle, he addresses a single
man and charges him with sustaining His Church. This
eradicates the interpretation that the ‘Church’ is simply
a collection of Christians, and that every Christian has
egalitarian authority within it.6
Jesus then goes on to say in Mt 16:19, “I will give you
the keys of the Kingdom of Heaven; whatever you bind
on Earth will be bound in Heaven and whatever you
loose on Earth will be loosed in Heaven”. Keys signify
authority. The one who holds the keys to something
has control over it. What’s more, Jesus doesn’t simply
say “watch over these keys until I return”, He tells Peter
that he has the authority to use them. This is a very
unambiguous link between the kingdom of Heaven
and the Church on Earth, with a very unambiguous
designation of patrimony.7
Until the Protestant Reformation, the governing structure
of the Church went unchallenged. Apostolic succession
has been unbroken for two millennia8. If this structure
wasn’t the intention of Christ when He founded His
Church, how were the men, who knew Christ personally,
and suffered martyrdom for Him, so mistaken? Aren’t
these the same men who’s written account of Christ’s
life we take to be the Word of God in Scripture? There
comes this issue of authority when we divorce the
Apostles from the Church, because in doing so, we are
treating them as both right and wrong. It cannot be that
the Scriptures carry with them the authority of God’s
Word but the Church does not, because it was the same
men who actualized both. Does it make sense that as
history progressed thousands of years away from the
epicenter of chronological Christianity, that we would
develop a greater understanding of what Christ intended
for His Church?
This will be the most challenging part of this essay,
because if the above is true, it logically follows that the
Catholic Church is the same Church established by

Christ when He gave Peter the keys of the Kingdom
of Heaven9. That authority, like a monarchy, has an
unbroken line from Peter to Pope Francis. One must
either disregard scripture or disregard logic to disregard
the authority of the Catholic Church.You may be saying
to yourself, “now Phillip, there is a third option, one
in which I interpret Jesus’ words to mean something
different than you.” There are parts of the Gospels
where Jesus speaks in parables, this is not one of them.
To decide to ignore this decision of Jesus, or any of his
teachings, is to reject Jesus Himself, for He is Truth.
IV.
How does the Church provide man a means of
salvation? With the authority of the Church comes the
power to minister the sacraments.10 The grace of the
sacraments is God’s life in us; it’s a spiritual nourishment
and fortification for our life on Earth. The authority also
allows the Church to maintain a Tradition, a source of
teaching outside of Scripture. There are centuries of
brilliant theologians and saints who’s writing provide
a rich well from which we can drink the waters of
wisdom and understanding. It also provides the ability
to shepherd people throughout different times in
history. The bible was written over the course of
thousands of years, and even over the course of its
pages, the cultures and attitudes of people changed.
The world continued changing after the Scriptures
were written, and the Scriptures needed to be written
in a universal way which can be applied to all people in
all times. It is then left to the Church to interpret and
apply the teachings of Scriptures and Tradition to the
contemporaneous world11. This is evident today with
issues such as contraceptives, medical ethics, genetic
engineering, abortion, transgenderism and pornography,
which aren’t delineated within the pages of the bible,
but can nevertheless be understood using general
moral principles derived from Scripture and Tradition.
In this way, God has given man a railing on our journey
to Him, acting both as a guide and support. The need
for such an aid is evident both from human experience
and from the Gospel, which is abundant with
references of the arduous path to Heaven. In Matthew
7:13-14, Jesus says to “enter through the narrow gate;
for the gate is wide and the road broad that leads to
destruction, and those who enter through it are many.
How narrow the gate and constricted the road that
leads to life. And those who find it are few”.
Again, Jesus is explaining clearly what so many now
ignore. That eternity with God isn’t a right and it
isn’t something that you achieve simply by accepting
the reality of Jesus. Why is He telling us this? Is it to
discourage us from following Him? Or is it to admonish
us against false paths? Jesus is prescribing a path to Him,
and His life is that prescription: to love. But what does
it mean to love? What does it mean to follow Christ?
Here, He tells us that it is not open for interpretation.
If it were, the road wouldn’t constricted, and the gate

wouldn’t be narrow. What are we to do? Does Jesus
leave us here without guidance- sheep without a
shepherd? No. He gives us His Mystical Body, lead by His
bishops, the shepherds of His Church on Earth.
Something worth pondering as I end my appeal: why
does Jesus describe both the road and the gate? To get
to Heaven we must first live our lives and those lives
must be found acceptable. Even those who get to the
gate may not be allowed entry. Is it a coincidence that
Jesus gave Peter the keys to the narrow gate of Heaven?
That Jesus intentionally bound these two concepts, entry
into eternity and the foundation of His Church?

Why did God the Father send His Son to die for
us when the Father could have forgiven our sins by
His will alone? Because Man needed God to show
us the Truth, to lead us from sin, and to give us the
gift of choosing Him. Jesus’ life and death on Earth
was because God wants us to love Him as He loves
us. To do that, we must be able to choose. Without
choice, there is no love. Jesus came to Earth to teach
us what it means to love, and to provide a means for
man to continue to grow in love after His ascension
into Heaven. The Catholic Church is the means that
God provided for man to come to know Christ, and
by knowing Him, choose Him, and by choosing Him,
reigning with Him in Eternity. The Church achieves this
by administering the sacraments, instructing its people,
and maintaining a Tradition, passed down from Jesus
to Peter, and from Peter throughout the apostolic
succession, shepherding man throughout history
towards the narrow gate.

My dear friends, I assure you that the scolding is
primarily for me, lest you think this is to be a lecture.
Everyone who has gone through massive and repeated
pain and loss has looked at their own life and wondered
what it is all for, and if there is any value in continuing
when pain seems so inevitable and endless. Some of us
have considered suicide as a way out of pain. Where it
is easy to condemn suicide, let us not so easily condemn
those of us who are metaphorically seeking to chew
our own legs off to escape a trap. Since human beings
have such a tremendous ability to forget past pain, it is
possible to overlook the overwhelming nature of the
pain which can drive us to consider an irrevocable act.
It is easy to regard a suicidal person as mentally ill or
even lacking in intelligence. Yet who among us has not
suffered a shattering loss that caused us to question
our own lives? There are factors which go into suicidal
thoughts and actions which may not be easy to
understand; that go beyond the loss.
First, when someone has suffered a catastrophic loss,
there are ways in which our brains do not function
normally. One of the commonest symptoms of PTSD,
which is inevitably the result of a severe shock or a heavy
loss, is that our prefrontal cortexes shut down for the
period immediately following the loss, and worse, every
time we are reminded of it to the degree that we are
upset. When our prefrontal cortexes shut down, as they
do during a fight-or-flight response, our decision making
is impaired, as is our judgment. In PTSD, instead of the
fight-or-flight response lasting a few seconds, as it does
in normal people, the “off switch” is broken, and our
fight-or-flight response continues far longer than is healthy,
often for minutes or even hours. The result is that we are
going around bathed in norepinephrine (adrenaline) and
cortisol, and it gradually breaks down our health.

In single-trauma or simple PTSD, this will heal over
time, even though it is very disruptive. In persons with
complex or multi-trauma PTSD, it does not heal easily,
if at all, and it must be managed. The challenge becomes
learning to shut down the fight-or-flight response. Some
people can do this through prayer and meditation;
others can use tapping on acupressure points, also
known as EFT.
PTSD people can act very strangely when triggered, and
this can alter or destroy relationships. A war veteran
who is trained in combat can become extremely
dangerous when triggered, and this can severely damage
his or her relationships with family and friends. A victim
of childhood abuse can regress (freeze, panic, switch
into the mindset of a younger self) when triggered, and
that can be disruptive in other ways. In both cases, the
person ends up alienating the very people they need to
count on the most.
If PTSD has no intervention, our despair at our own
behavior and the inevitable alterations to relationships can
lead us to believe that literally anything is better than living
in pain.Veterans kill themselves in staggering numbers, as
do chronically depressed victims of child abuse.
One thing that is poorly understood is that typical
antidepressants are useless for PTSD patients because
it is the dopamine system which is affected, not the
serotonin system. If you need help, and you suspect
PTSD, seek a trauma specialist, and don’t settle for SSRIs,
which might not do anything for you at all. you.
Believe it or not, PTSD is routinely treated with
stimulants, not SSRI antidepressants. You might find that
a cup of strong coffee does more for you than four or
five psychiatric meds. But by all means, discuss this with
your trauma specialist, since I am not a doctor. No
warranties expressed or implied. My only goal is to
keep you alive, since many PTSD people have no idea
that there are more ways to deal with our suffering than
ever before.

Now to the real reason I am talking with you today.
Although I have been profoundly suicidal many times,
through the grace of God, I am still alive. But my
brother and my father are not. Both of them passively
took their own lives.
My brother Mark had type 2 diabetes. Twice at my
home, he went into diabetic ketoacidosis. The first time,
he had stopped taking insulin, and I saw that he did not
look well as he was reclining on my couch. At that time,
I was texting with my then-husband to be, my beloved
Michael. Praise God, he had some medical training, and
when I described Mark’s condition, he instructed me to
drive him to the hospital immediately.
The doctors were able to save him, even though his
blood sugar was a whopping six hundred. Some time
later, my brother disappeared into his room for a day
and a half, and again my beloved Michael told me we
had to check on him. Mark was barely able to sit up,
and although he knew his name, he knew nothing else.
When the paramedics got there, they interpreted his
blood glucose not appearing on their meter as meaning
he had low blood sugar. Once more, Michael saved
Mark’s life by yelling at the paramedics not to give him
the packet of Glucagon they were about to administer.
He told them to look on the floor, which was littered
with empty containers of soda and chocolate milk.
They transported my brother to the hospital, where
the doctor was able to give him a real blood sugar test,
although sadly, by then he was comatose. I put my huge
black coat over my brother, and asked the doctor if he
would make it. The doctor was so cheerful, telling me
he would be fine, and I was not to worry. When we
were allowed to visit him in the ICU, the doctor told us
his blood sugar was seventeen hundred fifty, the highest
number he had ever seen on a living patient. He and I
suspected a suicide attempt, because it does not take a
rocket scientist to figure a diabetic with knowledge of
his condition doesn’t expect to live after stopping insulin
and drinking gallons of sugary liquids.

In my brother’s defense, he had begun telling me he
was having flashbacks about our father. He had had no
psychological help, and had been living with his vicious
wife and two children who needed him to be stable,
and like so many other kind husbands and fathers, he
had put them ahead of himself until he was nearly dead
from despair.
Flash forward a few years. I had asked my brother to
live with our aunt and cousin, both since he was very
close to my cousin, and because his health needed more
supervision than I could provide with my performance
schedule, and I knew that at my aunt’s house there was
no chance he would be left alone long enough to do
what he had done at my house.
Back in April of this year, my brother quit taking insulin
and, naturally, he became very sick. But this time, he
flatly refused to be hospitalized, despite many requests
from family members. He died in his room on April
27th, a few days after the anniversary of our father’s
death. I regard his death as a suicide, because it was
entirely preventable. The consequences of his actions
were known by him to be lethal, and he refused any
intervention to save his life.
I turned my father in to the police in 1989. His
prosecution over his sexual abuse of an eleven year old
boy resulted in three years of probation, since he was
deemed to be a first offender. When another victim
came forward, they essentially threw away the key.
My father had long anticipated his arrest, and even
believed since I was ten years old that I was going to
put him in prison, and that he would die there. As a
result, when he was first informed by a masseuse that
the grapefruit-sized mass in his abdomen needed to be
checked out by a doctor, he refused, many times. He
knew, as would anyone, that a swiftly growing abdominal
mass was not going to just go away, and that the most
likely cause was cancer.
When he was imprisoned, he was given no choice

about having the mass checked out, and a laparoscopic
examination showed inoperable metastatic cancer. It
took a long time for the cancer to kill him, and a lot of
determination on his part to refuse treatment- for as
long as he had a choice. That’s why I regard his death as
a suicide. He could have sought medical treatment when
the lump was first discovered, instead of refusing to treat
what would undoubtedly be a very serious diagnosis.
It might seem baffling that I would have wanted my
father to live, when he had destroyed so many young
people with his actions. But I am a daughter, and I loved
my father very much.
Many people who commit suicide believe that no one
cares about them, and that nobody would believe them
if they talked about what was wrong. The inevitable
wacky brain chemistry of an untreated or improperly
treated trauma patient makes this worse. Trauma can
make us think we are alone and unloved even if we are
not! That is why it is so essential to learn the difference
between reality and trauma-brain; to not confuse the
things we think while triggered with reality.
But I digress.
What matters is that my brother left his twin nineteen
year old sons bereft, as well as me, and my sons, who
he was very close to, our aunt and our cousin, who was
his best friend. All of these people have a Mark-shaped
hole in their hearts which can never be fixed. Some
people think that they will be better off dead, and even
that their loved ones will be better off without them
around, but this is a lie out of the depths of Hell
I have been around bereaved family members and
friends, and never once did any of us ever think we
were better off having lost someone. The reason I bring
my father up so specifically in this context is that even
though he was a serial rapist with dozens, possibly
hundreds of victims, including me, he was still my father
and I loved him. Always, we hold out the hope of
forgiveness and redemption and a return to love.

his death, and not feel relieved for a moment that he is ending and everyone was leaving. I could not believe

am not in trauma-brain, and I know that even at my
worst, my children love me, my friends love me, and my
silly little dog loves me. If I went, I would injure them.
Not because I am a worthy person, I am just as flawed
and craven as anyone else on Earth. But having lived
through the suicides and deaths of others, and observing
my own grief first hand, I would not want to put anyone
through this kind of pain.

Suicide is a supremely selfish act, even if it is

understandable to want to escape intolerable pain. We
are choosing to cause pain in others to alleviate our
own pain, and that is not right by any stretch of the
imagination. Even if we feel alone, we are not. Even if
we feel worthless, we are not. God loves us, and He has
a purpose for me and for you, and He will show you if
you ask him. He might not write it down, or give you
a vision of angels. He might show you in a completely
unexpected way.

I will close by sharing the way I began my faith as a

Catholic. Some years ago, I began to understand during
prayer that I was supposed to become a Catholic. I
was resistant, and argued with Him for a long time. Of
course, I was the only one arguing. He merely repeated
His request. Eventually I surrendered, and He told me
exactly which church at exactly which hour. Imagine my

Parzival's Meek Horse

The sombre mood continues in the Tavern as we await
better news of the Southern Gal. I keep busy serving
the customers with a heart being weighed down and
weighed in the scales. Eyes are downcast and sad,
but there is little sign of anyone breaking down. After
all this is a Tavern fit for Knights and Heroes, Saints
and those trying to be lesser sinners than they were
yesterday. For we do not break: we are meek, here.
But meek people are weak people, surely? I see far
too many christians who think that way. These days
everyone admires the 'kick-arse' hero. The Bruce Willis,
the Steven Seagal, the Vin Diesel. I rather like Vin, he
would have made a good knight. The firebrand 'pastor'?
Not so much.
Even the women in films are made out to be tough.
Amazingly so, considering their frame, weight, tendons
and almost total lack of real muscle. Lara Croft and
Xena the Warrior Princess may 'appeal' to some, but
meek they ain't. None have the qualities of a fine horse.
I am reminded of my young friend Parzival; he who
rode alone with just his horse for company. And what
he put that steed to. It did not let him down and had
not since the day he 'broke'. The horse that is. And the
young Christian Knight himself, too. He was broken-
in, a tad too quickly as it happened. He gained his
Knighthood too early. He failed in his quest, snatching
defeat from the open hand of victory. He failed to ask
the Fundamental Questions. For a while, until he had
taken a few sound whacks, and even sounder advice
from old men, his horse was the better man. Meek.
People get the wrong idea about warriors and horses.
One has been fitted for battle, war, and violence. The
other has to be made fit.

Do you know what meek and humble of heart
really means?
A friend of mine once told me her agnostic sister-
in-law had opened the Bible for the first time and
happened to land on Matthew 5:5, “Blessed are
the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.” Irritated,
she shut the book, convinced that her suspicions
about Christianity ultimately favouring weak, blindly
submissive individuals had been confirmed.
There once was a time when I couldn’t have agreed
more. My notion of the ideal Christian – presumably a
person fitting the description of meek – was someone
who meagrely followed a set of rules they didn’t really
understand and consistently maintained a monotonous
disposition. I assumed that qualities like passion, self-
confidence, and playfulness were in direct opposition
to meekness and other such characteristics that
Christians were called to emulate.
It wasn’t until I heard a talk by Fr. John Riccardo that
I realized how misled I had been. In explaining the
original meaning of the word meek, Fr. Riccardo
explained that the word as people tend to recognize
it today is not at all how it was intended when used
by Jesus in Matthew 5:5 and 11:29, or by St. Paul in 2
Corinthians 10:1.
“Meek” was translated from the Greek word praus
(pronounced prah-oos), which is a military term
referring to a horse. As writer Sam Whatley explains
in a River Region’s Journey article, “Wild stallions were
brought down from the mountains and [trained.]”
Depending on their temperament, some were used for
tasks like pulling carts and others were used for racing.
The finest stallions, however, would be trained for war.
“They retained their fierce spirit, courage, and power,
but were disciplined to respond to the slightest nudge

or pressure of the rider’s leg,” Whatley writes. “They

could gallop into battle … and come to a sliding stop

at a word. They were not frightened by arrows, spears,

or torches. Then they were said to be meeked.”

As Fr. Riccardo explained, meek, in the sense that

biblical writers meant it, refers to strength that is under
control. It’s strength that knows when to assert itself
and when to be passive, as opposed to reacting purely
out of emotion. It is strength that can effectively defend
itself and what it values, all the while knowing that it,
in itself, is not in control but is instead a capable and
crucial instrument of the one who is.

When I heard this description of meek, clearly

portraying neither a blind follower, nor a passionless
coward, it became clear why we are instructed to strive
for it. Anything else is either taking matters wholly into
our own hands, inevitably leading to disaster, or washing
our hands completely of any responsibility, thus deeming
ourselves powerless. In reality, like the warrior upon his
warhorse, our relationship with God is meant to be
a cooperation in which He holds the power. It is His
far-surpassing intellect and prescience that guides us on
the path, we have only to listen to his gentle nudges to
know the way.

How is sin quantified, so that the value of one sin
against another is better or worse in contrast?
Sins are distinguished mainly by the severity: Mortal sin
(heavy sin).
There are sins that lead to death (death’s sins) and sins
that do not lead to death. 1 Jh 5: 16-17: “Who sees
that his brother is committing a sin that does not lead
to death? And God will give him life, for there is sin
that leads to death, and I will not speak of it when I say
that he should pray, every wrong is sin, but there is sin
that does not lead to death. “
Not all sins are the same: manslaughter and theft are
visible actions, envy and greed take place in thought,
but are likewise sinful. Obeying sins (Jak 4:17) are also
not obvious, but still sins.
Obviously, sins, including deadly sins, are more or less
difficult: murder is heavier than theft. The characteristic
of the person to whom one is wrong is also to be taken
into account: a violent act against the parents weighs
heavier than a violence against a stranger (CCC 1858).
The subjective side also has an influence on the
severity of the guilt of the sinner: sins that someone
with great knowledge is doing are heavier than sins
that someone with little knowledge does (Lk 12: 47-
48). Unencumbered unawareness can diminish guilt,
but not cancel the responsibility for a serious offense.
Driving impulses, passions as well as externally exerted
pressure or morbid disturbances can reduce the
voluntary and thus the guilt.

The sin of wickedness, from a deliberate decision for
evil, weighs most heavily (CCC 1860).
In essence, sin is concerned with whether one is just or
not, whether one is justified in God and whether one
is just towards others as the image of God. The image
of God does not mean an external likeness or likeness
in the sense of the same capacities but in the sense of
the God’s righteousness.
Jesus reveals that he who is without sin should be the
one to throw the stone; or one should not condemn
anyone so that you will not be condemned yourself.
According to Luther, man, the Christian, is justified by
faith alone.
But this presupposes good works and good deeds. The
good works and good deeds alone, without faith, bring
no justification before God.
We are all sinners by nature and require the Holy
Spirit so that we may seek forgiveness for our
weakness, provided that we do not behave weaker
than necessary.
Do you agree that Paul has shared the Christ´s
message? Or did he share his own considerations
about what he had refused as Saul? Shouldn’t one
should accept uniquely Christ’s original words,
and/or what one believes Christ’s words to be?
Paul’s theology is Paul’s theology. He does not
represent Jesus’ theology in its origin. He is rather
glorifying Jesus and modifying his proclamations. For
example, Jesus never said that you are justified by faith
alone, but Paul did in his letter to the Romans. Paul
didn’t even encounter Jesus personally. But without
Paul, Christianity would not have spread. Paul’s

theology is a special category for itself and can be
considered epistemologically relevant.
What are Evangelical and Catholic agreements
and differences?
I. Where do they agree?
The Protestant and the Catholic Roman
Church are approximately the same size and
take over some of the state’s tasks in health
care and education: In many areas, the two
great churches are now working together well,
especially at the level of local communities.
What do they have in common?They believe
in God the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
• They believe that the Bible is the Word of God.
• They believe that baptism establishes
both membership in the Church and the
connection to all other Christians.
• They celebrate the Last Supper and believe
that Christ is present.
• They pray the apostolic creed.
• They celebrate worship on Sundays and many
festivals in the church year.
• They sing some common church songs.
• They advocate social justice, peace and the
preservation of creation.
II. What really (still) separates them?
Some relevant aspects:
1. Who directs the church?
Evangelical Christians have no pope. In the
Catholic understanding of the Church, the
Pope is the “successor of St. Peter, “and as
such by Christ, to the supreme keyholder
and pastor of the Church (Mt 16, 18f, Jh
21, 15-17). According to the dogma of
infallibility, a decision of the Pope ex cathedra
was binding for all Catholic Christians.
Meanwhile Franciscus says the pope is not

a perfect human either. For Protestants it is
inconceivable that bishops, or even the pope,
are qualitatively or morally better men. All
men are equal before God. All people make
mistakes and are dependent on forgiveness.
In the meantime Pope Francis has abolished
the Pope’s infallibility dogma. The leadership
structures in the Evangelical Church are more
democratic - from bottom to top.
2. Difference in the Eucharist
The most important difference between
Catholic and Protestant faith can be found at
the Eucharistic celebration. Catholics believe
that bread and wine become the body and
blood of Christ, and Jesus is physically present
in every mass. For the Protestant, Jesus is
also present in the celebration of the Holy
Supper as he promised, “Where two or three
are gathered together in my name, I am
among them.” (Mt 18, 20) but according to
the Protestant understanding of the Lord’s
Supper, bread and wine is more like a symbol
of Jesus’ love for us: just as grains are crushed
and wonderful bread is made, and as grapes
are pressed, and the juice flows out of the
grapes, Jesus’ body was broken for us on
the cross, and gave his blood to forgive our
guilt. This means that Jesus loved us so much
that he died for us on the cross. According
to evangelical understanding, every baptized
Christian may come to the Lord’s table.
According to Catholic understanding, only
Catholics can participate in the Eucharist.
3. Different number of Sacraments
The Catholic (and Orthodox) Church knows
seven sacraments. The Evangelical Church
recognizes only baptism and the Eucharist as
a sacrament (marriage, confirmation, transfer

of the spiritual office, etc., they are blessings,
but not sacraments). According to the
evangelical view, the criteria for a sacrament
are as follows: It must be used by Jesus Christ
through an explicit foundation or promise
word that must be connected with a visible
sign. The first criterion is not fulfilled according
to the evangelical understanding of marriage,
anointing, confirmation and consecration.
4. Veneration:
Protestants reject the worship of Mary and
the saints because they fear that this will
diminish God’s glory. According to evangelical
understanding, however, “saints” are examples
of the faith which is emulated. However,
believers do not need them as “advocates of
God”, but rather directly address God with
their prayer.
And - “saints” can ultimately be called all men
who believe in Jesus Christ and follow him.
Saints are those who seek salvation in Christ.
Therefore the Apostle Paul also addressed his
letters “to the saints” in the church. Romans,
Chapter 1: “Among whom are you, Jesus
Christ, who are called, ... the beloved saints
who are in Rome: grace and peace from God
our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ!”

5. Understanding of the Church
The community of churches plays a much
more important role for Catholics than for
Protestants. For Catholic Christians, it is the
sacrament of salvation being holy signs and
tools of God in the world.
6. Facilities of the church:

church, the interior of Catholic churches is
often very splendidly furnished. There are
almost 12 crosses of apostles everywhere.
Protestant churches are mostly simpler in
the interior and dispense with pompous
furnishings. Focusing on prayer and listening to
the Word of God is at the forefront.
7. Conclusion
As both agree with most of the faith questions,
many Catholics and Protestants try to live their
religion together. When Christians of different
confessions believe in one another, they call it
“ecumenism”. This is Greek and means “the
whole inhabited earth”. Christians want to
show this: actually we all belong together.
Who or what is God?
I can’t answer the question who God is. If you were
capable of answering this question you would not need
to believe in God, you would know God. That would
not be an expression of faith.
Therefore, I would follow Rudolf Otto’s point of view
in his philosophy, a former German Professor for
religious studies (1869-1937), who understands God
as The Numinous, The Sacred and Secret Mystique.

to an unknowable reality underlying all things.]
The numinous is considered a mystery, a mysterium
tremendum (Latin), i.e. an eerie mystery that is both
fascinating and terrifying at the same time. Also,
according to Otto the numinous experience reminds
us of concepts and principles such as love, supremacy,
and goodness, so that the numinous is not described,
but is connected with thought and action.

What are differences between

Christianity and Islam?

In Christianity, one follows the New Testament. Jesus

was a reformer. Basics are the charity and the golden
rule to treat someone as you would like to be treated.
In the New Testament, that is, in Christian dogmatics,
according to Paul, law and gospel are separated.
That’s not the case in Islam. According to Sharia, Islam
is the law. Thus, in contrast to Christianity, Islam is a
political religion. This does not mean that Christianity
was not abused as a political religion. But this abuse
is not the essence of the Christian religion. In Islam,
on the other hand, there was and is no abuse with
regard to this aspect, because the core aspect is the
lawfulness of religion and thus - unlike in Christianity
- corresponds to its (the Islamic) nature. Therefore,
secularism is alien to Islam. However, critics point out
the “inglorious” crusades. But the Christian Crusades
were a response to the caliph’s much larger and more
brutal campaigns of conquest. These extended beyond
the Mediterranean.

Because of the Sharia law, every Muslim will value the

law of Islam higher than every other law, e.g. in the
Western Occident, because, according to Islam, no law
can stand above the law of Allah. Therefore, as long
as Muslims are a minority in a country, they conform
to the law. But that changes, as history shows, when
they gain the upper hand. Therefore, the true Muslim
can not be integrated into Western democracy in
the long term, no matter how dedicated and friendly
he is, unless he distances himself or separates himself
from his ideology. But then he would not be a real
Muslim anymore. In Islam there is neither an age
of enlightenment nor an emancipation of women
comparable to Western standards.

The Error About Feuerbach

Feuerbach: “He who says and knows nothing
more about me, than that I am an atheist, says
and knows so much about me as nothing.”
(Collected Works 10, p. 189)
Feuerbach is widely regarded as a great motivator of
the Enlightenment, as an atheist who represents man’s
faith in God as a “projection” of human desires and
needs. Feuerbach is misunderstood, however.
Feuerbach can only be understood correctly, taking
into account all of his writings. According to his
own statement, he reaches from God on reason to
humanism, but Christological ideas are firmly anchored
in his metaphysical mind.
Not at least as a Hegelian, he devotes himself to
rationalism. He says “goodbye” to creationism, the
literal understanding of the Bible. He rejects this as a
bible scholar just like the theologian Darwin, without
denying God.
His understanding of God, however, has remained. His
focus is on the Christian meaning of the immanence
of Jesus Christ, in God’s traditional perspective for us,
he exposes his critically reflected human alienation by
mirroring the human ego, not by the “projection”, to
the God in the hereafter.
The definition of “projection” in relation to Feuerbach’s
critique of religion is an artificial term that Feuerbach
himself never used. Feuerbach brings to light the
worldliness of Christ and places the “Triune God” in
the reality of this world, not as a God believed to be
Triune by Feuerbach, but as God in himself and Jesus
not believed as the Son of God, but as a personified

sacred message which hides itself as a symbol behind the

Through his criticism of the nature of Christianity,
he does not criticize the religiosity per se (for itself),
but rather the Christian bigotry of his time, in which
the pious creatively mirrored their ideas on what
they perceived as God (in the distance). This bigotry
was exploited by the industrialists and the clergy in
order to protect their interests due to Christianity, for
example by reference to the God-set authority.
Marx’s joy over the “atheism” of Ludwig Feuerbach
is linked to the criticism of Feuerbach’s lack of social
criticism. But Feuerbach’s understanding of God is
not atheistic, even though he distinguishes between
“true” and “non-true” atheists, but he does so only in
the context of the rejection of the Christian bigoted
creationist image of God in his time, where a true
atheist rejects not only the predicates, that is, the divine
qualities are hypostasized human qualities, but also the
subject - God Himself. In the beginning, “in infinitum”,
this thought pattern would not correlate with God.
Rather, man would be the beginning of the God whom
he had in mind.
In fact, Feuerbach was not a true a-theist in himself,
but as a naturalist and christologist an anti-theist: for
him, God is not theistic, that is, from the point of view
of the senses, the supersensible, but the sensuous in
itself and thus concretely, sensually in us. (See also
Feuerbach, Complete Works II, p. 273).
God, according to Feuerbach, is not a God as a
predicate, thus not a God of reason or of human
creation (so it must not be a reflection of noble
human attributes), such as in the divine world of
antiquity. (See Feuerbach, Complete Works I, p. 286
f.). God is an ontological substratum of being. In this
consciousness, Feuerbach demands the abolition

of abstraction and thus of human reflection; on the
contrary, Feuerbach demands the path from alienation
to anthropology, humanization. God is thus invested
in us and the world; is there and therefore immanent.
This immanence stands for human alienation, resulting
from the transmission of human desires into the
distance, opposite. In it, the immanence of God, is the
humanization, the attention of the people to each
other in this world. This is mankind for itself, self-
responsible, if one follows Feuerbach’s theory.
God, according to Feuerbach, can not necessarily be
not, since the term nothing exists by definition. God
cannot be not, God then would be nothing. But there
is no nothing. According to Feuerbach, nothing cannot
be thought of, because “non entis sunt nulla praedicata.
Non entis nulla est scientia. “ (There are no attributes of
the non-being. There is no knowledge of the non-being.)
(Feuerbach, Gesammelte Werke 9, 1967 ff., P. 54).
This idea probably goes back to Aristotelian
metaphysics. Aristotle justified the notion of the
divine “nous” (meaning) by saying that nothing cannot
be, rather that nothing is something, otherwise the
concept or the idea of nothingness would not be. Since
Feuerbach clearly thinks so, he cannot be an a-theist.
Feuerbach has thus developed from the pious tradition
of theology to a metaphysics of the immanence of
God. The transcendental character is Feuerbach’s
critique, the reflection of positive qualities from human
empiricism on the one hand, imagined highest to which
the superlative of human experience is transferred, and
ultimately, the eschatological idea of a life after
death, according to Feuerbach - in his criticism of
the immortality of the soul - again a reflection upon
egocentrical human wishful thinking. This aspect also
emerges from his late work, the Theogony, as well as
the emphasis on his philosophy as a new religion:

“... It (philosophy) takes the place of religion, it has the
essence of religion in it, it is in truth even religion.”1
In comparison with his considerations, Feuerbach
raises from two of Hegel’s components of existing
reservations. First, he expresses himself to Hegel’s
unchristianity, as shown in the first volume of all his
works with the chapter heading On Philosophy and
Christianity in Relation to the Hegelian Philosophy Made
Accusation of Unchristianity (Feuerbach, Alle Werke I,
1846-66, pp. 42-107.) Feuerbach accuses Hegel of his
view of the divine relationship of man resulting from
God, not because Feuerbach rejects God, but because
Hegel, by the lack of differentiation of immanence and
transcendence, defines the relationship between man-
God - God-man inadequately.
Therefore, Hegel also lacks (second component)
the understanding of the sensuality of Christology,
which cannot be put into words respective to man’s
fundamental need for religion, and - in relation to
Christology - becoming the logos in sarx (flesh). God
becomes concrete through Jesus.
Turning to the abstraction of God, Feuerbach
writes: “God ... is not a thing you can find with the
telescope in the sky of astronomy or with the search
glass in a botanical garden ... you will only find it in
faith.” Feuerbach, Complete Works I, p. 480 ff.). Man,
however, of the believing people, in Feuerbach’s time,
moves away from the nearness towards the so-
called incarnation of God in Christ and hypostatizes,
according to Feuerbach, instead a wishful thinking
towards a distant God. (See Feuerbach, Das Wesen des
Christentums, p. 238). According to Feuerbach, Jesus is
“in fact an incarnation of God” (Feuerbach, Das Wesen
des Christentums, p. 109). From the extrasensory being

Although frightened by the rationalistic exegesis Ludwig Feuerbachs, Münster 1998.
of Gottlieb Paul (eg, miracle theology, rationality of
miracles) and his view that many Christian dogmas
are one-dimensional theological consolidations,
Feuerbach did not see that many dogmas - albeit
theoretically - belong to the real Wanted to express
faith. Nevertheless, Feuerbach’s religion is an integrable
corrective of Christian theology.

Even if Feuerbach’s religion cannot replace Christology,

it still has to overcome its demonization and recognize
the positive effect of stimulating reflection on Christian
theology. (See Udo Kern, Der andere Feuerbach,
p. 164 f.). Feuerbach was not an atheist, but rather,
in appreciation of the Christian religion, he tried to
explain it in accordance with his view.

However, Feuerbach cannot be considered the

standard. Take him to the level of a protagonist of the
absolute truth regarding the “right” understanding of
God would be just as wrong as ignoring the Zeitgeist
of his time, which he meets critically.

Feuerbach, moreover, transformed himself from the

pious creationist - in his early years - to an anti-
creationist, which means from the literal understanding
to the symbolical, but does not question the
immanence of God and the place of Jesus in this world.
This is precisely why Feuerbach, the young supporter

Cold Logic and Sociology

Artificial intelligence is the ability to  solve  problems,
using experience, by analyzing information from the
environment, demonstrated by a machine. With its advent,
artificial intelligence (AI) has attracted the attention
of experts from all fields of science and industry. Some
of them look with approval and enthusiasm at its
applicative use while some experts look at it with a
great deal of skepticism- even fear. The very definition of
AI implies that it could at some point, in a certain place,
under certain conditions, replace a human, and assume
his duties, obligations, and risks; without  requiring
the  retention of his  benefits  and rights. That’s a very
strong and desirable moment that many natural and
technical experts welcome with the great investment
of their resources in the direction of developing AI as
an applicable tool. Of course, the penetration of the AI
into the sphere of human activity in all areas is not, and
cannot, be completely known because AI, by its very
nature, can take almost all forms that a human needs
when performing a certain task. With this in mind, it is
clear that the opportunities provided by applicable AI
are almost unlimited and very promising. This is seen in
the development of information technology, which is a

any compensation for its work, doesn’t get tired, has no
vacation and never sleeps, it’s clear why “robots” are the
desirable workforce of every employer. By doing this
type of work,  AI makes it technologically  flexible and
applicable to higher-ranking and higher-demand jobs.
Another group of scientists who approach the topic of
using AI with skepticism and caution warn of the possible
dangers that go along with the penetration of AI into
the realms of human life. One of the dangers you face is
from an agent (an AI entity that has the ability to think
intelligently and make decisions independently) that has
a specific task imposed on it by a person and aims to
perform that task as efficiently as possible.  Where is
the danger hiding? The problem could be centralized to
the notion of the “cold logic” of the agent performing
the task. The term cold logic agent is considered a
decision-making system based on logical reasonings of
the input information, made in order to maximize the
effectiveness of performing tasks free of ethical
preferences. Generally, free from any consideration
of human factors such as culture, language, social and
political dynamics, personal identity and emotions. Cold
logic only deals with performing its intended function as
efficiently as possible. Of course, such an agent does not
necessarily result in a negative and tragic outcomes, but
it does lead to thinking about possible events that do not
escalate very quickly. An example of an event escalation
may be the example given above. An event that could be
a link in the chain is the situation of a human driver who
brings the goods to the warehouse being late. In this
case, the agent is prevented from performing his task
of warehouse keeper in a timely and successful manner.
In order to solve this problem, the agent also deals with
the problem of delayed delivery of goods in addition to
his daily work. Based on the information, the agent
learns that the driver got out of bed late. However, this
is happening more and more often and the agent has
to come up with a solution to the problem. The agent

vlasništvo te hranjenjem vozača unijeti u njegovo tijelo
mikro prekidač. Pri zdravstvenom pregledu vozača
robot u vakcini ubrizgava mikročip (Nano tehnologija)
u tijelo vozača uz njegovu suglasnost o vakciniranju
bez njegovog znanja o sadržaju vakcine. Sada je vozač
u djelomičnoj kontroli agenta bez svog znanja. Agent
nije narušio nijedno ograničenje koje mu je vlasnik
dao, nije uradio bez pristanka ljudske osobe da se nad
njom vrši neka radnja te je istovremeno maksimizirao
efikasnost svog rada. Sada vozač neće kasniti nikako
ali je postao subjekt agenta. Navedeni slijed događaj
može biti mnogo ozbiljniji u smjeru kontrole UI nad

I have been asked to describe my algorithm for
generating my Mandelbrot Set images. I will also show
some examples of my output.
Each of my images shows a square portion of the
complex number plane. The positive X direction is left
to right, and the positive Y direction is top to bottom.
Each solid black pixel marks a complex number that is
a member of the Mandelbrot Set. Each colored pixel
marks a complex number that is not a member of the
Set. So, all of the fascinating structures occur outside
the Mandelbrot Set boundaries.
For each pixel, I determine whether the
corresponding complex number Z is a member
of the Mandelbrot Set. The logical steps in that
determination are the following.
A) Define a sequence of complex numbers
C(N) for all integers N > 0, such that C(1) =
Z and C(N+1) = C(N)*C(N) + Z.
B) If the sequence {C(N)} diverges off to
infinity, then the original complex number Z is
not in the Mandelbrot Set.
C) If the sequence {C(N)} remains bounded,
then Z is in the Mandelbrot Set.
In my actual computer implementation, I have to
set a maximum N, because of course no iterative
computation can be carried all the way to infinity. I use
N = 300,000 as my maximum N.
Also, somebody has proven a theorem that if |C(N)|
> 2 for any N then the sequence {C(N)} diverges off
to infinity.

So, my computational steps are the following.
A) For each pixel, start computing the
numbers C(N) in order, using the formula
given above.
B) If I reach an N for which |C(N)| > 2, I stop,
knowing that Z for the current pixel is not in
the Mandelbrot Set. In such a case, I record the
N value at which |C(N)| > 2 was detected. This
value will eventually be used to color the pixel.
C) If I reach N = 300,000 without detecting
|C(N)| > 2, I color the pixel black.
At this stage, each pixel in the image either has been
colored black, or has had one N value recorded for
it. Since my images are 1000x1000 pixels, I have up
to one million of these N values recorded. I need to
assign a color to each N value, and I want to do so in
such a way that the total occurrences of each color are
reasonably balanced.
A) Sort the N values into monotonically
increasing order. (But don't forget which pixel
each N value came from!)
B) Separate the set of sorted values into bins.
The number of bins is equal to the number of
colors in my color set.
C) Assign one color from my color set to
each bin.
D) As nearly as possible, choose the bin
boundaries so that the populations of all the
bins are equal. This action assures that all
of my colors will be approximately equally
represented in my final product.

Finally, go back to the incomplete image and color

each non-black pixel according to which bin its
recorded N value falls into. To achieve a smoother
appearance, use bin-to-bin interpolation of the color
values, because some N values fall near the center of
a bin, but others fall near a boundary of a bin. I don't
remember the exact details of my interpolation off
the top of my head.

The result of all of this work is an image such as the

ones accompanying this note!

Once I have completed the image, I have the abilities

to save it, and to zoom in for closer examination
of interesting regions. If I save the image I also save
its complex plane corner coordinates, so that I can
return to that exact same location in future program
executions. To zoom in, I just point and click. My default
zoom in factor is 10, but I can adjust it.
