Quotes from The Book Thief

-We are gradually succeeding,” the nurse was informing the teacher, “in creating a new future. It will be a new class of
physically and mentally advanced Germans. An officer class.” p.279

Wonder is a story about a boy with craniofacial difference which gave him distorted facial
features . The Nazis wouldn't like that he does not appear as the ideal big strong German.

-“Son, you can’t go around painting yourself black, you hear?” Rudy was interested, and confused. The moon was
undone now, free to move and rise and fall and drip on the boy’s face, making him nice and murky, like his thoughts.
“Why not, Papa?” “Because they’ll take you away.” “Why?” “Because you shouldn’t want to be like black people or
Jewish people or anyone who is . . . not us.” p.41

Auggie is not like everyone else and is quite different. The Nazis don't like anyone who doesn't
resemble their attitude or they are specific appearance.
Why Wonder is “burnable”
Wonder is burnable because;

-It’s a story about someone who has fairly obvious

physical differences which was disliked by Nazis

-The characters are not Nazis nor do they practice

Nazism

-Acceptance of someone who looks different

-Includes people of color which Nazis did not like

-Intense sadness and love that may be considered

weak
Why Wonder is important
This novel is very important because it follows the
journey of a young boy learning to accept himself and
society learning to accept him. The novel teaches its
readers that everyone is beautiful and the world and
society needs to change not you. The novel is
especially important because its a young child that
overcomes the pressure of society therefore it gives
other people confidence in knowing that anyone can
who they really are. I chose this novel because it
goes against almost everything the Nazis believed in.
The novel’s ending proves the Nazis and their beliefs
to be wrong and puts their ideologies down.
