LO-3 Demonstrate the understandings of cooperating effectively with others in the context of
the Holiday Inn Express.

P3- Explaining the fundamental factors that make an effective team as

opposed to an ineffective team.
Team means a group or gathering of people with various skills and experience who are working
together to achieve a common goal that is preset by them (Taylor, 2014). When a team can
achieve its goal effectively then it is regarded as an effective team. To build an effective team the
combination of the following four fundamental factors are must. These factors are discussing
below:

1. Context or situation: At first the context or situation of creating a team or group must be
selected. To build an effective team, the context of the team should set carefully before the work
has started. Team's context should be based on the followings,

 In a team, the team members are the major component. A team should have some other
resources which will help the team members to achieve their goals. So adequate quantity
of resources must be available.
 The structure of the team makes the more effective. All the roles and responsibility of the
team members, their reporting process and most importantly the role of the leader must
be recognized through the team context (Montana and Charnov, 2011).
 The performance of the team members needs to be evaluated and should brought under a
reward system under the context of the team structure to make it an effective one.

2. Composition: It is the most fundamental factor in the formation of an effective team. Better
composition of different elements of a team ensure good performance and result in achieving the
team's goal. It must be based on the followings,

 The size of the team. It should not be much small or very big.
 Each and every roles of the team members should be clearly identified.
 In the time of selecting members for the team, members ability should analyze most
careful.
 Personality is very important thing because in a team there are different types of people
and all of them should possess such kind of personality which will help the company in
achieving the goal.

3. Work design: It means designing the team's work in the most efficient way that helps the
team members to achieve its goal (Brooks, 2012). Work design should be composed of the
followings,

 Every member must have definite autonomy in the team.

 Members must have different skills to perform different types of works.
 It should base on task variety means composition of various works.

4. Process: It is the final component of building an effective team. Process means the way by
which a team achieve its goal. It is composed of the following facts,

 The team must perform based on a preset common and specific goal.
 Each member must be efficient to do any kinds of job.
 Conflict level in the team should be limited
 Team members should avoid social loafing.

Identifying the characteristics of ineffective team in comparison to the

effective one.
Some of the characteristics of ineffective team are identified below:

 In an ineffective team, there are remaining lack of unity among the team members.
 They can not do their task in an organized way
 They may not share their knowledge among themselves, so there remain knowledge gap
 Team members do not do any kind of self- analysis to evaluate their own performance.
 In an ineffective team works are not distributed equally.
M3- Analyzing relevant team and group theories to support the development
of dynamic Corporation
Working in a team or group has more advantages than working the same task alone. There are a
lot of theories based on the team and group works which are using to make the team work more
efficient and also support the dynamic development of the Corporation. Some of the most widely
used theories are analyzed below:

Model of team stages by Bruce Tuckman

Bruce Tuckman's team stages model generally discussed the development stages of a group. In
this theory, Tuckman describe the way which should be used by every group to make high
performance and achieve the team's goal (Rao, 2010). There are 5 stages of group development
which are discussed below:

1. Forming

2. Storming

3. Norming

4. Performing

5. Adjourning

Forming: It is the first stage of team development in which team leader and other members
introduced themselves with each other. In this stage members are discussing about project goal,
individual roles etc.

Storming: It is a complex stage because the team members want to establish their own thought
in the group works.

Norming: In this stage team members are starting to co-operate each other and working like a
team (Mullins, 2010). Team members appreciate each other’s thought and support them in
achieving the team’s goal.
Performing: In this stage all the members are confident about themselves that they can do
anything complex. Each and every member are motivated to their work and they can do their
task with the direct supervision of the team leader.

Adjourning: It is the last step in where the team members evaluate their own performance. They
also evaluate their relationship with their leader whether it is good or bad during the project.

Belbin’s team roles theory

Dr. Meredith Belbin is famous for his team roles theory in which he suggests 9 roles of the team
members which are very necessary to establish an effective team. All 9 roles are discussed
below:

Figure: Belbin’s team roles theory. Source: (ResearchGate, 2019)

Shaper: It is the role of shaping the group. The shaper needs to possess strong characteristics to
face challenges.

Implementer: He is the person who is responsible to make the plan into action.
Completer finisher: A person in team whose responsibility is to complete the task thoroughly
and timely.
Co-Ordinator: He is the person who co- ordinate the whole working process of the group. He is
acting like the chairperson of the team.
Team worker: A person who is liable to ensure that all the members are doing their job with
satisfaction.
Resource investigator: He is person who is responsible to find out resources for the team
mainly from the outside of the organization.
Plant: He is regarded as the idea creator of the team who offers new ideas.
Monitor evaluator: He is the person who evaluates various opportunities for the team.
Specialist: A person in the team who provide his specialized knowledge for different jobs.
To form effective teams and negotiating those teams in the best possible way, the Holiday Inn
Express should follow the above-mentioned theories. As it is a service provider organization
and it is the largest in the world, so a lots of small and medium team works must be needed for
achieving their goals. So, to build effective team, all of those relevant theories will play a grate
role.
LO4-Applying concepts and philosophies of organizational behavior
in the context of Holiday Inn Express
P4- Applying concepts and philosophies of organizational behavior under a
given business condition in the context of the Holiday Inn Express
Organization behavior is study of behaving and co-operating with peoples individually and
within the group. Here some of the core concepts and philosophies of organizational behavior are
discussed below in the context of the Holiday Inn Express
Individual differences: There are 1145 hotels of the Holiday Inn hotel chain business where
there are more than 1,50,000 employees are working (Anon, 2019). Individuals are different
from one other. But all of them are working as a team by maintaining the hotels own behavioral
criteria.

Perception: Perception is the way of interpreting something in the way of people’s own idea and
thought. Under the organizational context of a hotel chain business like Holiday Inn, employees
should have high level of personal precepting ability.
Conflict and negotiation process: As the Holiday Inn are a large hotel chain business where
there are a lot of peoples are working conflict can be a frequent issue. The authority of the hotel
chain has the ability to negotiate these conflicts at the early stage before it is too late.
Personalities: As it is business which is operating its business by serving people, so all the
employees must maintain good personality.
Power and politics: It are the ability to make decision which should have placed in all stages in
the organization. in Holiday Inn, most crucial decisions are made by the upper level of the
organization and the less important decisions are made by the lower level management.
M4: Exploring and evaluating the concept and philosophies of OB that
influences behavior in both positive and negative way.
Organization behavior is the concept of behaving with the people both in the internal and
external environment of an organization (Robbins and Judge, 2012). Holiday Inn is a hotel chain
business which have to deal with its customers and there are a lot of employees who are working
in the organization must have maintain a well-established behaving process which is good for the
organization. They have to maintain several concepts that may have positive and negative effect
on the organization. Some of those are discussed below;
Organizational policy: Organizational policy can be affected by organizational behavior. In an
organization where all the members are co-operating with each other in the decision-making
process, that organization has great opportunity to be successful in the long run. In the Holiday
Inn, the management set the organizational policy in a way that all the employees can play their
role in the decision-making process.
Structure of leadership: In an organization where the top-level management are friendlier and
their leadership method is very co-operative, that organization’s employees will have great
perception about their organization and they can think the organization as their own. Employees
of Holiday Inn’s are directly supervised by their immediate senior employees. So there remain
no room for doing error.
Conflict management: Different organization have maintained different policies for negotiating
conflict. Some management want that the conflicts should be negotiated by the employees
themselves and some others want that only the top-level management do that task. When the
employees think that they are valued in the organization they will be more motivated otherwise
not.
Conclusion
In summary, working in a team has several advantages than working alone. In a team each and
everybody has their own roles which should be maintained properly to be successful in achieving
the preset common goal of the team. All the members need to co-operate in the organization to
make their organization a successful one. Team’s goal should not create any conflict with the
goal of the organization.
