Also distribute the nurses and non- nurse personnel into the different shift. (Follow
the steps in the Staffing Formula)

Staffing Formula:

1. Categorize the pt. according to level of care needed.

300 x 0.30 = 90 pts. Needing minimal care

300 x 0.45 =135 pts. Needing moderate care
300 x 0.15 = 45 pts. Needing intensive care
300 x 0.1 = 30 pts. Needing highly specialized nursing care
Total: 300 pts. NCH/ day

2. Find the number of Nursing Care Hours (NCH) needed by pt. at each level of
care / day

90 x 1.5 = 135 NCH/ day

135 x 3 = 405 NCH/day
45 x 4.5 = 202. 5 NCH/ day
30 x 6 = 180 NCH/ day
Total: 922.5 NCH/ day

3. Find the total NCH needed by 300 pt./year

 922.5 x 365 (days/year) = 336, 712. 5 NCH / year

4. Find the actual working hours rendered by nursing personnel/ year.

 8 (hours/day) x 213 (working days) = 1, 704 working hour/year

5. Find the total # of nursing personnel needed.

A.Total NCH per year : 336,712.5 NCH/ year = 197.60 or 198

B. Relief x total Nursing Personnel 198 x 0. 15 = 29.7 or 30

C.Total nursing personnel needed 198 + 30 = 228

6. Categorize to professional and non-professional personnel ratio of non-

professional in a tertiary hospital is 65: 35.

228 X.35 = 80 Nursing Assistant

7. Distribution by shifts.

148 x .45 = 67 nurses on morning shift

148 x. 37= 54. 76 or 55 nurses on evening shift
148 x .18 = 26.64 or 25 nurses on night shift
