Abstract
Introduction: Osteoarthritis is a worldwide burden which
demands prompt treatment. Both intra-articular injection with platelet rich plasma (PRP) and hyaluronic acid (HA) seem to give promising result. Our study intended to seek the efficacy of both agents in managing knee osteoarthritis patients. Methods: This retrospective cohort study was done during the period from January 1st, 2017 to December 31st, 2018. Registered patients in Surabaya Orthopedic and Traumatology Hospital with grade I-III knee osteoarthritis receiving intra- articular PRP and Hyalone® as HA injection were evaluated by using the Western Ontario and McMaster University’s Arthritis Index (WOMAC) and pain score. Results: Analytical result from 18 and 20 patients receiving Hyalone® and PRP respectively revealed that mean improvement of total WOMAC was 12.94 ± 13.83 (P = 0.001) in Hyalone® group, and 7.10 ± 9.49 (P = 0.003) in PRP group. Meanwhile, mean of total pain score decreased 2.06 ± 2.46 (P=0.002) and 1.25 ± 1.71 (P=0.004) consecutively in Hyalone® and PRP group. Conclusion: Both agents resulted in improvement of knee osteoarthritis. Albeit, further studies are recommended to compare the effectiveness of both agents.
