Making your own picture books

Now that you know how picture books work, it’s time for you to
write, design and create your own!

You will need to develop:

 A concept or message (i.e., the idea you want to convey in
the picture book)
 A storyline
 A main character
 The narrative (i.e. the words you use to tell the story)
 The illustration (i.e. the visual features you use to tell the
story)
 The format (i.e. the layout of the book)

Requirements:
 Your book must be no longer than fourteen pages, including the front and back covers
 You may do it on your laptop or on paper; if it’s hardcopy you must scan/photograph each
page to submit in softcopy in addition to your physical product
 You must submit a softcopy with the file name following this structure:
Surname_Firstname_PictureBook.* Any files that do not follow this convention will require
resubmission.

Some things to remember:

 Make it meaningful, but don’t be preachy or earnest. It’s a story!
 Show, don’t tell. This will be developed with drafting, which you must do.
 Be creative. Choose any form or style that will suit your story and your skills.
 Keep it short! You don’t have a huge amount of time to work on this task, and you need to
keep it manageable. Ensure that every page adds something to the story, so that you can do
it justice.
 Make choices for a purpose. Your illustrations, word choices must be meaningful.
 I am not your art teacher. If you are not a drawer/visual artist, don’t worry. Consider the
visual techniques you have studied and find a way to incorporate them into your
illustrations. Remember, it’s fundamentally about the story, and the illustrations help to
represent it and make meaning.

Due: Friday 2nd July

(Week 11)

NB: If you are sick or travelling and are not / will not be at school on the last day, you MUST submit it
in advance of that lesson.

At the beginning of next term, I will select the most effective picture books and read them aloud to
you as part of our lesson I like to call, “Play (High) School”. 
