Prepare and Request Electrical

1
Materials and Tools

Module
This lesson contains information and suggested learning activities in Electrical
Installation and Maintenance. It covers the fundamental knowledge in Preparing and
Requesting Electrical Materials and Tools according to job specifications.

What’s In

Welcome to the world of Electrical Installation and Maintenance! In this lesson, you are
guided to understand the different electrical materials and tools according to job
specifications and the common forms used in electrical works.

You are then required to read, understand and internalize the different types and uses
of electrical materials and tools so that at the end of the lesson, you may be able to
grasp the importance of these electrical materials and tools and be able to safely perform
basic tasks according to job specifications.

3
What’s New
Almost all of our household appliances and gadgets uses electricity as its power source.
To make this available in every place where it is needed, electrical wiring connections
must be installed by qualified or licensed electricians. Working with electricity or any
electrical installation requires a basic understanding of common tools and materials as
well as safety precautions to observe while at work.

Electrical tools are hand implements that serve as an extension of the hand and
powered by manual labor which adds speed, power, and accuracy in any electrical
works. On the other hand, electrical materials are developed and constructed for a
special purpose or function.

What is It

Lesson 1 Prepare Electrical Materials and Tools

This lesson covers the common electrical tools and materials along with their purpose
or function, illustrations are provided to help you familiarize yourself with them. Always
observe safety in handling or manipulating any tools to ensure a safe workplace and
avoid accidents.

The following are the most common electrical tools and devices that you may encounter
in the electrical installation and maintenance exploratory courses.

After acquiring the necessary knowledge on electrical tools, the next step is to know how
to manipulate them properly, some activities that you may try are the following;
skinning/stripping a wire and making wire splices and joints.

Supplemental Resources: You may watch in this link web addresses for
additional information / discussion about the following topics:

Common Wire Splices and Joints

As a student in Electrical Installation and Maintenance, you should acquire the
important knowledge and skills in wire splices and joints and should be familiar with
the actual application of every splice and joint. This will serve as your tool in performing
actual wiring installation. Provided below are some of the common electrical wire splices
and joints.

Lesson 2 Request Electrical Supplies, Materials and Tools

Different Forms Used in Electrical Installation and Maintenance

Proper documentation is an important part in any profession, to do so, different forms
are used depending on the task to be performed, the correctness of the entry of different
forms is necessary to monitor, acquire, or borrow right, complete and accurate number
of materials and tools needed in a specific electrical job or provide job specifications.
Provided below are the common forms used in EIM for you to be familiarized with them.

1. Purchase Requisition Form – is a document generated by a user, department,

or storeroom-personnel to notify the purchasing
department items needed to order which also indicates
the quantity, unit of measure, description, cost, and
may also include other specifications as needed. Also
known as purchase request or requisition.

2. Inventory Form – are proper and systematic recording of the tools, materials,
supplies, and equipment in an enterprise which may also include their condition,
location, and/or status. Inventories consist of raw materials, work-in-progress
goods, and finished goods that are considered to be the portion of a business’s
assets that are ready or ready for sale or are disposed of.

9
3. Job Order Form / Work Order Form – is a written instruction to perform
a work according to specified requirements, within specified timeframe and
cost estimates.

4. Borrower’s Form – a form used to request for tools

and equipment needed for a particular job. It
indicates the department that the borrower is
connected to, the date borrowed, the job needed to
be done, the person who approved the request, the
date returned, and the condition of the tools and
equipment borrowed.

Based on the discussions provided, match column A with column B. Write your answer
on a separate sheet of paper.
A. B.

Enrichment Activity 1.2.

Directions: Based on the word cloud provided, classify where the item belongs to;
electrical tools, electrical materials, or electrical splices and joints. Write your answer
on a separate piece of paper.

What I Have Learned

Directions: On a separate paper, put a checkmark on the number of the concepts that
you have fully understand. For numbers that you do not fully understand, you may read
again the topics in this module.

1. Electrical tools are hand implements powered by manual labor which adds
speed, power, and accuracy in electrical work.
2. Electrical materials are supplies and devices developed and constructed for a
special purpose or function.

11
3. Electrical forms are documents for monitoring, acquiring, borrowing, and
providing job specifications in electrical work.
4. Electrical Splices and Joints are used to connect two or more wires in an
electrical installation work.
5. An extension cord is a temporary source of electrical energy which is used when
the number of convenience outlets in one room is insufficient to the number of
appliances or gadgets to be used.
6. Familiarization of electrical tools, materials, and forms is important to
adequately perform electrical tasks according to job specifications.

Time to Think: Have you ever imagined a world without tools and materials?
What might be the advantages and the disadvantages? After considering both,
do you think that tools and materials are important?

What I Can Do
