Give examples of each of the four-primary management activities in the context of a
national fast-food chain
such as Burger King.
DECISION MAKING: Burger King restaurants feature flame-broiled hamburgers,
chicken, and other specialty sandwiches. Overall, the menu consists of hamburgers,
cheeseburgers, and chicken and fish sandwiches. The menu also includes French fries,
onion rings, salads, and desserts.
Burger King and other fast-food companies are facing new competition from unlikely
rivals. Specifically, “quick casual” restaurants, including Subway Sandwiches, Chipotle
Mexican Grill, Cosi, and Panera Bread, are offering healthier food at higher prices.
Eventually, Burger King decided to add its own healthier food offerings. The Chicken
Whopper and a new Veggie Burger are examples of healthier alternatives.
PLANNING: Burger King restaurant decided to reduce its expenses by decreasing the
restaurant expenses such as paper costs and occupancy costs.
DIRECTING OPERATIONAL ACTIVITIES: Now that there is a pandemic, people are
just staying in their homes and rarely going to the physical store. How many cashier/s
and staff should be on duty? How much food and other supplies should be ordered
from the supplier each day, weekly, or by month? What is the average or target sales?
How much profit should be earned to pay the employees and pay for restaurant
expenses such as utilities and occupancy cost.
CONTROLLING: Are the company’s goals being accomplished or achieved? By
conducting daily, weekly, monthly, or annually reports, forecasting sales, tracking what
stock comes into the restaurant can be measured if the company's goals are being
accomplished.
