Richard goes on his first hunting trip with his father and brother. When a young deer comes to drink from a creek, Richard purposely misses shooting it, even though his brother insults him for doing so. Richard tells his father he did not feel it was right to kill the animal. This event motivates the author to be a better person, as Richard stuck to his principles and spared the deer's life, influenced neither by his brother's insults nor society's expectations.

The novel that I read was ‘Dear Mr Kilmer’ by Anne Schraff.
an event that motivates me to become a better person is the hunting scene.
At the beginning, Richard Knight, his elder brother, Gus
and their father, Pa went hunting in the winter. It was Richard’s first time going hunting. They waited at a creek and a young deer came to drink. Richard aimed his rifle at the deer, but purposely missed the shot. Gus was angry and insults Richard for purposely misfiring the dear. In addition, Richard’s father was disappointed with Richard but did not scold him. Pa asked why he purposely missed shooting the buck. Richard told Pa that he had no rights to kill the animal and Richard felt painful and sad to kill an animal. This event motivates me to become a better person because Richard teaches me to stick to our principles to do what is right. Even though he was scolded and reprimanded by Gus, Richard did not decide to shoot the deer but purposely misfired it. The deer escaped and Richard was happy. This clearly motivates me to be a better person as I have my own principles to follow and not being influenced by others. In our society today, many teenagers are influenced by others and they follow blindly without knowing what is right or wrong.
