Task 1
Alma Haser
A lot of her projects are based upon her own interests and
intrigues of the world. She likes to distort things to the point
where you’re unsure of where it started and using this to
challenge herself. One of her project is called ‘Save the
Children’ where she worked on a campaign which aims to
capture the pain the children were feeling and the horrors
they had endured. Haser wants to ensure that her images
have a meaningful approach and uses this to make an image
which conveys the feelings of the subject. Her work is very much
thought out to be more than is just shown, for example in her
‘Eureka effect’ series the use of flowers represented the growth
of an idea.
The images themselves are very well composed and so simple yet
they hold a lot of depth and purpose, her use of many different
experimental techniques such as crumpling, weaving and tearing the photos accentuates the
feelings she is trying to portray.
She uses paper folding techniques along with collaging to create effects which sparks interest around
her images. Alma Haser has a very distinct way of photographing and ‘designing’ that you would be
able to always tell it is her work.
Stephen Gill
The fact that you can see all kinds of shape and interpret what you want from the photographs. His
work is more about letting the subject guide you rather than using the existing ideas you’ve already
thought of – you can definitely tell from this series of images that let the objects direct your mind as
there is not a preconceived message being portrayed.
It’s a type of photography which I haven’t seen done before, so it is completely unique. I think for
Gill his style comes under the wing of letting the subject control your mind and not the other way
round.
