The habits of Smoking can increase blood cholesterol levels in addition
to various other diseases that can be inflicted. One of the main ingredients of cigarettes is nicotine which is a major component of cigarettes that can increase the secretion of catecholamine thus increasing lipolysis. This causes triglyceride, cholesterol and VLDL levels, as well as lowering HDL levels. This research is an observational analytic method with a cross sectional study approach, with the aim to find out whether there is a relationship between electric smokers and non- smokers with total cholesterol levels in male students of the Faculty of Medicine, Islamic University of North Sumatra. The sample in this study amounted to 64 people, with the sample of this study were 32 people who smoked electrically and 32 people were not smokers. Taken with a purposive sampling technique and meet the inclusion criteria. Then a blood sample is taken from capillary blood to see the level of total cholesterol. The unpaired T test results obtained value obtained sig 0.00 (p> 0.05) which indicates that there is a statistically significant relationship between electric smokers and increased cholesterol levels.
