ON BECOMING A TRANSFORMATIONAL LEADER:
WHAT IS AND WHAT NOT?
OBJECTIVES:
 At the end of the lesson, you should be able to:
 compare transformational and transactional leadership
 explain the three goals of transformational leadership;
 describethe different components of transformational
leadership;
 discuss transactional leadership; and
 Discusspractical ways on how to be an effective
transformative leader.
Activity:

Search at Google at least ten great leaders in


our country who have characteristics that are
inspiring to most millennials. Classify them as
to what specific sector in the society they
become leaders; whether in the education,
business, broadcasting and journalism,
religious, etc.

most young people and to the
whole country as well?
Discussion :
James McGregor Burns was the first to
develop transformative leadership. For him,
transformational leadership can be seen
when leaders and followers make each other
to advance to a higher level of moral and
motivation. They are able to inspire followers
to change expectations , perceptions and
motivations to work towards common
goals.
 Bernard M. Bass expanded the idea of Burns , he
defined transformational leadership as based on
the impact that it has on its followers in three
important ways: (a) increasing the followers
awareness of the importance of their work and
importance of performing them well, (b) making
followers aware of their needs and for personal
growth, development and accomplishment, and
(c) inspiring followers to transcend their own self-
interest for the good of the organization.
Bass exemplifies the four components of transformational leadership:

COMPONENTS DESCRIPTION

Transformational leaders not only challenge the status quo, they also encourage
Intellectual Stimulation creativity among followers. The leader encourages followers to explore new ways
of doing things and new opportunities to learn.

Involves offering support and encouragement to individual followers.


Individualized Consideration
Have a clear vision that they are able to articulate to followers. These leaders are
Inspirational Motivation also able to help followers experience the same passion and motivation to fulfill
these goals.

Serves as a role model for flowers. Because followers trust and respect the leader,
Idealized Influence they emulate the leader and internalize his/her ideals.
THE THREE GOALS OF TRANSFORMATIONAL LEADERSHIP
1.Helping staff develop and maintain a collaborative professional
school culture. Staff members often talk observe, talk and plan
together .Norms of collective responsibility and continuous
improvement encourage them to teach other how to teach
better.
2.Fostering teacher development. When leaders give a staff a
role, in solving non routine school improvement problems, they
should make sure goals are explicit and ambitious, not unrealistic.
3.Helping teachers solve problem more effectively. According
to Leadwood, that transformational leaders use practices
primarily to help staff members work smarter, mot harder. These
leaders shared a genuine belief members as a group could
develop a better solution than the principal could alone.
Some specific ideas culled from several sources on transformational
leadership ( Sagor, Leithwood and Jantzi, Poplin)

 Visit each classroom everyday, assist in classroom; encourage


teachers to visit one another’s classes.
 Involve the whole staff in deliberating on school goals, beliefs and
visions at the beginning of the year.
 Find the good things that are happening and publicly recognize
the work of the staff and students who have helped in the
improvement of the school.
 Help teachers work smarter by actively seeking different
interpretations and checking out assumptions place individual
problems in the larger perspective of the whole school.
