RESUME OF SKIMMING, SCANNING, PREVIEWING AND PREDICTING IN


READING

1. SKIMMING
- Skimming is fast technique of reading
- The goals of skimming is get an overview of the text or main idea of the text.
- The steps of skimming are :
a. Read the title
b. Read the first paragraph very quickly
c. Read and underline the 1st two lines of each paragraph
d. Sub-heading and subtitles
e. Read very quickly and underline the last two lines of each paragraph
f. Read very quickly the last paragraph of the text
g. Underline key-words
- Also : underline  number, dates, percents, the most, the best, the minority,
places, nationalities, repetitions of words and anything like that.

2. SCANNING
The technique of scanning should be use after we read the questions in the task.
We use scanning when we alredy know what to search for. We search for
something specific.
If we don’t know how to find the teks?
a. Always keep in mind what you search for
b. What kind of information are you searching for.
So we previous skimming will help us, will guide us true the whole teks.
True scanning and we will be able the location of answer
“Read carefully in order to justify the answer”
3. READING STRATEGIES : PREVIEWING
- You examine important parts of the text or the book before reading.
 You examine
 You analyse
 You observe
Example : Book  Front cover, title, pictures, index
- Objective of previewing :
 To get in contact with the text for the first time
 To get familiar with the concept you are going to read about

4. READING STRATEGIES : PREDICTING


- After we preview, what do we do with that information? We make predeiction
about what the text is about
- Objective of predicting :
 To get ready to start reading
 To imagine the content of the text
- Previewing and predicting are done before reading
- They are done almost simultaneously
- They active prior knowledge
- They make you ask your self questions
- They should not take more than 2 or 3 minutes
