The Museum has been presented with the opportunity to acquire an amazing artifact: the San Diego Electric Railway PCC
502. While visitors may not currently be able to visit, the museum has set up a GoFundMe to raise the needed funds to
acquire the 502.
The San Diego Electric Railway (SDERy) ordered 28 PCC cars in 1937 to replace aging equipment, modernize its system,
and bring back passengers that were moving to the automobile. SDERy was among the first streetcar systems in the United
States to purchase the streamlined PCC car, and the 502 was the first PCC to arrive and see service in California.
During World War II, the 502 was one of two cars painted red and blue for the American Red Cross's blood donation
campaign. In 1948, National City Lines purchased the San Diego Electric Railway, and by 1949 the SDERy abandoned its
streetcar lines in favor of buses. In 1950, 502 and 16 of its sister PCC cars were sold to El Paso City Lines for service on the
international loop between El Paso, Texas, and the Mexican border city of Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua, where it was numbered
1500.
Marty Bernard photo
The cross seats were replaced with longitudinal seating, so customs officials could check passengers quickly as they cross the
border. This line was closed in 1973, and El Paso City Lines shut down a year later. Instead of scrapping the cars, the City of
El Paso decided to store them long-term at a closed airfield. The San Diego Electric Railway Association in 1984 purchased
the 502 in hopes to restore it for use on the new San Diego Metropolitan light rail line in San Diego. The 502 was stored in
the San Diego Trolley yard for some time until MTS staff ordered them to move out. Sometime after moving out, the 502
suffered from an arson fire. After this, SDERA was unable to raise sufficient funds for a full restoration. It was then sold to a
private owner in 1998 for a proposed streetcar line in the South Lake Tahoe Area.
Current
condition of car 502!
With such an amazing story the Western Railway Museum is now raising funds to bring car 502 to the museum. These funds
will help to pay for and ship the car, securing its place in the Museum's collection of artifacts where its amazing story can be
told. This car is a great candidate for the museum’s expert shop crew to restore back to its original 1937 glory.

Delta Air Lines provided MARTA with 50 electrostatic sprayers that disperse disinfectant in a fine mist that clings to and
sanitizes surfaces without leaving a residue. “Delta’s willingness to share best practices allowed us to bypass a lengthy
procurement process and gain access to this innovative cleaning technology immediately,” said MARTA General Manager
and Chief Executive Officer Jeffrey Parker in a press release.
The 30 hand-held and 20 backpack sprayers are being used by trained MARTA maintenance crews to disinfect vehicles and
facilities in a fraction of the time needed for a typical wipe down cleaning, MARTA officials said. The backpack sprayers are
especially useful in cleaning MARTA’s rail cars every evening since the wearable two-and-a-half gallon tanks eliminate the
need for constant disinfectant refills. The equipment can sanitize a 450 foot, 6-car train in under 20 minutes. MARTA
operates over 200 heavy rail cars and four streetcars.
Currently rail cars are lightly cleaned while in-service. Now, the goal is to incorporate mid-day sanitizing with the
electrostatic sprayers. Meanwhile, MARTA .\has already begun distributing 2 million free disposable masks to riders at rail
stations and bus bays.
NEW ORLEANS, LA - The New Orleans Regional Transit Authority (NORTA) in mid-July announced that all frontline
employees will receive up to $2,000 in COVID-19 hazard payments. The hazard pay will be funded by anticipated cost
savings resulting from the termination of the Transdev operations and maintenance contract and CARES Act funding,
NORTA officials said in a press release.
PHILADELPHIA, PA - Tramways & Urban Transit (T&UT) magazine reported that the PATCO line from Philadelphia to
south New Jersey closed four of the thirteen stations, (namely 12th/13th St, City Hall, Ashland and Westmont) the due to the
reduction in patronage due o the COVID-19 issue and increased headways from 15 to 20 minutes. Also SEPTA , suffering
from a 70% patronage reduction, had instituted Saturday level service on Mondays through Fridays on March 28th.
The Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) earlier this week launched a fund to help the families of
SEPTA employees who have died or suffered health issues as a result of COVID-19.The SEPTA Disaster Relief Memorial
Fund was started in large part due to feedback from employees who wanted a way to help the families of coworkers severely
impacted by the pandemic, SEPTA officials said in a press release. An independent committee of agency employees will
advise on the distribution of funds held at the Philadelphia Foundation. The Delaware Valley Regional Economic Fund
donated $10,000 to the fund.SEPTA families affected by COVID-19 are eligible to apply for funding. Donations can be made
by members of the public as well as employees.
PITTSBURGH, PA - On July 6th, the Port Authority of Allegheny County began nightly closures of the Mount Washington
Transit Tunnel in Pittsburgh for repairs.
Wellington Power Corp. will be replacing lighting and cable inside the tunnel as part of the project. The project is expected
to take two years to complete, and will require light rail and bus detours through Allentown between 8 pm. and 4:30 am.
SAN FRANCISCO, CA - The Market Street Railway reported that there is still no date set for return of the historic
streetcars and cable cars to the streets of San Francisco. Muni announced it will restart its light rail lines in August with big
changes and is very slowly restoring some bus lines. However, Transportation Director Jeff Tumlin told his board at the end
of June that many Muni lines may never return to service without new sources of revenue. Market Street Railway is building
a coalition of groups to advocate for the streetcars' return as soon as they are safe for operators and passengers. That said,
they also recognize the bigger challenges the city and Muni face in getting people to ride transit while the virus continues
unchecked. We also recognize that unlike the streetcars, where protective Plexiglas barriers for operators can be fitted on the
cars that don't already have them, cable cars pose a unique challenge for operation in this environment.
Track crews are taking the opportunity to tackle some needed track work as well, as was done last month on Market. Below,
the track crew is replacing ties in the crosswalk at Third and Market. And the streetcars are still making appearances,
without passengers, for training and maintenance purposes. Veteran 1929 Melbourne W2 class Tram 496 is also shown on
the M-line and at the Portal during one of those runs.
WASHINGTON, DC - Tramways & Urban Transit (T&UT) magazine reported that after suffering a 90% drop in Metrorail
riders due to the pandemic, 19 stations were closed on March 26th.
MODELING HINTS.....
MTS Imports - The Legacy!
(A review of the great models they made!!)
***
by George Huckaby, Custom Traxx
From the late 1980s until they announced retirement in 2003, Joel Lovitch and his MTS Imports, Inc were the leading
manufacturer of accurate traction models. MTS Imports, Inc had a large following among Philadelphia Trolley modelers as
they made quality brass models of most Philadelphia 1912-1967 era streetcars except for the 4000 and 5000 series "Hog
Island" cars. MTS Imports' models compare favorably when placed next to current 3D printed models.
Beginning in 1996 with the air-electric PCC models, Custom Traxx provided decals for many of the MTS models issued
thereafter. We were the benefits of his deep traction knowledge.
We were saddened to report the passing of Joel Lovitch, MTS Imports on March 26, 2020. His surviving wife, Carol,
forwarded a photo taken of Joel (left) and I (center) and Jack La Russa (N. J. International) at one of the NMRA-sponsored
National Train Shows.
This photo prompted us to take a look at all the traction and other models imported and released by MTS during their "time
in the sun". Data and photographs were provided to Trolleyville by Joel Lovitch for this article. We have listed all the items
in both HO and O scale produced by MTS Imports, Inc. The models are listed in order of release and arranged in six groups
and photos of some of the models are displayed after each group. Although primarily a model traction importer, MTS also
imported steam engines, and unique passenger and freight cars.
