Vaccine manufacturer Merck has abandoned development of two

coronavirus vaccines, saying that after extensive research it was
concluded that the shots offered less protection than just contracting the
virus itself and developing antibodies.

The company announced (https://www.merck.com/news/merck-discontinues-

development-of-sars-cov-2-covid-19-vaccine-candidates-continues-
development-of-two-investigational-therapeutic-candidates/) that the shots
V590 and V591 were ‘well tolerated’ by test patients, however they generated
an ‘inferior’ immune system response in comparison with natural infection.
The company stated that instead it will focus on research into therapeutic drugs
labeled as MK-7110 and MK-4482.

The drugs aim to protect patients from the damage of an overactive immune
response to the virus.

“Interim results from a Phase 3 study showed a greater than 50 percent

reduction in the risk of death or respiratory failure in patients hospitalized with
moderate to severe COVID-19,” the company’s statement noted of the MK-
7110 drug.

Merck is to receive around $356 million from the US government to fast-track

production of the potential treatments under Operation Warp Speed.

Chief Marketing Officer Michael Nally recently told Bloomberg

(https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-01-25/merck-shuts-down-
covid-vaccine-program-after-lackluster-data)that Merck is aiming to produce
some 20 million courses of the MK-4482 drug, an oral antiviral which patients
will take twice a day for five days.

Meanwhile, in related news, German scientists have claimed

(https://www.politico.com/) that the UK Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine is less
than 8% effective in over 65s, prompting the vaccine developers to hit back,
rubbishing the claims.

The German media published the claims, alleging it had been ‘confirmed’ by
‘multiple’ unnamed senior German government sources.

UK government ministers have suggested that the claim could be related to the
ongoing dispute over delivery of the vaccine between the European Union and
AstraZeneca.
The EU, which is yet to approve the vaccine, has threatened to block exports

threatens-BLOCK-Pfizer-jabs-going-UK.html) of shots to Britain, in a move that
has been branded ‘spiteful’ by British government sources.

In an effort to make sure its member states get their ‘fair share’ of vaccines, the
EU has also threatened to block the delivery of Pfizer vaccines to the UK,
demanding that drug companies provide detailed information on when they plan
to export Covid jabs to countries outside the bloc.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has followed Michigan, Chicago

and California in announcing plans to ease COVID restrictions,
prompting many conservatives to allege that the timing is political.

The Governor said in a press conference that the situation in relation to new
cases and hospitalizations was improving, meaning lockdown measures could be
relaxed soon.

“Cuomo didn’t give further details on what type of restrictions he might loosen
or what cluster zones might be eliminated or changed,” reports Syracuse.com

some-covid-restrictions-cluster-zones.html). “The state Health Department is
reviewing data on the zones now and Cuomo said expects to have
announcements in the coming days.”

Respondents to the story said the move was politically timed to help Joe Biden
ultimately claim victory over COVID.

“Now they will reduce the unreported replication factor for the COVID test, and
presto – no more COVID,” said another.

“Amazing how it all disappeared a week after Trump’s gone,” added another.

California Governor Gavin Newsom is set to lift the stay-at-home order

across all regions tomorrow based on data that’s not publicly available,
leading some to accuse him of playing politics.

“Multiple sources tell me Governor Newsom will lift the stay at home order on
all regions in California tomorrow,” tweeted journalist Ashley Zavala. “All
counties will go back to the tier system, sources say. Most will return to the
purple tier— allowing the reopening of outdoor dining, indoor salons.”

She added that the decision to open up was “based off ICU projections for the
next four weeks statewide,” but that the data is “not publicly accessible.”

Although COVID-19 cases in California have been falling in recent days, on

January 21st the state recorded its highest daily death toll ever, registering 740
fatalities.

Given the timing of the decision, coming less than a week after Joe Biden’s
inauguration, many respondents argued that Newsom had deliberately delayed
opening up so as not to help Donald Trump, who was an opponent of lockdowns
throughout the final months of his presidency.

“So obvious that the left used all of this as a ploy to win the election.
Miraculously everything is fine 5 days after the inauguration. Don’t want old Joe
looking bad do they?” commented one Twitter user.

“Covid is suddenly going away,” remarked another.

“So, everything is now just fine, not because of the numbers (they had their
highest death count EVER just 3 days ago), but clearly because of a change in
national administration makes making everybody scared and economically
destroyed is no longer desired,” added another.

Others said that ICU capacity in many areas was still dangerously low and that
Newsom had jumped the gun in making the call.

British MPs within his own party are demanding that Prime Minister
Boris Johnson outline some sort of exit strategy for the nationwide
lockdown in the country, with one senior minister warning that if he
doesn’t people will begin to “rise up and bring it down”.

Speaking to Talk Radio, Sir Desmond Swayne, the MP for New Forest West,
warned that the “goalposts keep moving” on the lockdown timeframe, and “We
have to focus on hospital admissions and keep that focus rigorous…[or] at some
stage people have got to rise up and bring it down.”

Tory MP Sir Desmond Swayne says the idea people will accept endless
lockdown restrictions and "go on living like troglodytes is absurd."

Swayne’s comments echo those of West Midlands Police commissioner David

Jamieson, who warned back in October (https://summit.news/2020/10/30/uk-
police-chief-warns-lockdown-could-spark-riots-civil-unrest/) at the start of the
second lockdown that “We’re sitting on a time bomb here.”

“We’re getting very near the stage where you could see a considerable explosion
of frustration and energy,” Jamieson noted, adding “Things are very on the edge
in a lot of communities and it wouldn’t take very much to spark off unrest, riots,
damage.”

Boris Johnson has repeatedly said that it is ‘too early’ to say when restrictions
will be lifted, while suggestions for easing the lockdown by other government
figures keep moving to later and later in the year, with the Summer or beyond
now being touted (https://www.reuters.com/article/uk-health-coronavirus-
britain-summer/too-soon-to-think-about-summer-holidays-says-uk-interior-
minister-idUSKBN29Q2KT) as a possible timeframe.
Seventy Conservative MPs have formed a coalition

No10-press-conference-Tories-demand-lockdown-exit-plan.html) urging the
government to start lifting the lockdown no later than early March .

MP Mark Harper, who is leading the coalition dubbed the ‘Covid Recovery
Group’ said “People must see light at the end of the tunnel and feel hope for the
future and businesses need to be able to plan our recovery.”

Meanwhile, Environment Secretary George Eustice has warned that even more
‘draconian’ restrictions may be introduced (https://www.rt.com/uk/513298-
britain-covid19-police-variant-heath/) if people don’t obey the current ‘rules’.

“Generally, with this whole pandemic, we’ve had to take some quite
extraordinary steps, very draconian steps, that are a big infringement on people’s
liberty,” Eustice said.

“And yes, that does mean that we have to intervene in quite a draconian way and
issue penalties, and we make no apology for doing that,” he continued, adding
the further measures are “under review.”

hardline measures to enforce the lockdown, including demanding powers to

found flouting restrictions.

While all of this is going on, medical experts, scientists and researchers all over
