Dear Sir, As you may be aware, there exists large gap between projected demand and supply of indigenous coal to keep pace with the large generation capacity addition programme in the 12" Plan and beyond. Imported coal is being used by several utilities and may continue, so as to bridge the shortfall in indigenous coal supplies to the coal based power stations. Coal quality is a major input parameter for design of a power plant boiler. Large coal quality variations may not be readily accommodated in a plant and may also lead to loss of efficiency. It is thus considered prudent that all future coal fired thermal. power stations to be set up in the country shall be so designed as to enable use of higher percentage of imported/high GCV coal as may be required.
