Plumeria
A plumeria is a tree commonly found in Hawaii where the
flowers of are used to make leis.
A plumeria’s flowers have a very sweet smell, almost like that
of honey. Its flowers can be red, yellow, red and yellow, yellow
and white, pink, red and white, pink and white, or red, yellow, and
white. Plumerias can bloom up to 2 times per year, having
maximum flowers in the spring and fewer flowers in the fall.
A plumeria has 2 growing seasons. One in Spring and one in
Fall. When a plumeria grows, each of it’s limbs can put on up to
3 more limbs. So, if you start with 3 limbs, within 3 growing
seasons, you could have up to 27 limbs!!
Plumerias can grow practically anywhere. They can thrive in
sand or rich soil. They love direct sunlight or shade. However, a
plumeria is in its element when it can have plenty of sun and
appropriate water, so as to maintain soil moistness just above a
state of dryness. On the other hand, if the plant receives a lesser
amount of sun, then a lesser amount of watering is necessary -
again, to ensure that soil moistness stays just above the dry state.
The more sun, the more water. The less sun, the less water. A
common mistake of novice plumeria growers is to overwater the
plant when it is not able to be exposed to enough sun, thereby
resulting in a rotted root system. Conversely, if a plumeria plant is
able to receive maximum exposure to the sun, but they aren't
watered enough, the plant will die.
To plant your plumeria, simply place the bottom in the ground.
