Chapter 1

A. Introduction

The internet is filled with million of individuals who are looking to meet other people, to
gather and share first hand information and experiences to some sort of things. When it comes to
online social networking, some websites are commonly used, known as social networking sites.
Social networking is a current invention in the internet that connects people from different parts
of the world. It is defined as a structure made up of individuals who are connected by one or more
specific types of dependency, such as friendship, kinship, common interest, financial exchange,
dislike, sexual relationships, or relationships of beliefs, knowledge or prestige.

A social network became popular during the past few years that have an illustration of
each user’s profile information, links and other social activities. The social networking websites
are more like the virtual meeting places where people can just chill and hang out with friends.
They can discuss on different topics, share information, and exchange files and pictures. There
are some people who use these sites as a way to meet long lost friend and batch mates, whereas
there are others for whom it becomes a bridge to meet their future love one. You can either
reconnect with your friends and family members or search for a dating partner. Some people also
use these websites to promote their blogs and services. The professional people uses this as a
medium to raise their visibility, get noticed, tell about their company, service, and get more
clients.

These days the social networking sites have been become extremely popular among the
youth especially among students. Keeping in mind, the growing popularity of these sites and the
effect it has and the benefits that it brings along. Does social networking have a big impact to the
students’ performance in school? Do students who spend more time being online and chatting
with friends through the social networks today has a difficulty to concentrate in their class?

Sitting in front of a computer for hours on end chatting with friends while playing
Farmville, posting pictures and videos of yours through social networks such as Twitter or
Facebook, instead of doing assignments? Do Social networking sites help students to get high
grades or just harm grades? Do the Social Networking sites affect the social stability of students
and their concentration to their studies? This research will open your eyes from the reality how
social networks like Facebook affect the students in their academic performance.
