About this Manual; Contents of the Package; The Aquila Vet Introduction

INTRODUCTION
ABOUT THIS MANUAL
This user manual provides information on the Aquila Vet and its probes. The
manual describes the set up of the scanner, instructions for use, technical
specifications, handling, storage and the different probes.
At the front of this manual you will find a sheet with the names of all
chapters (A - E).
The scanner employs an extensive 'pull-down' menu structure. Since a menu
may contain a next menu and/or previous menu they are constructed as a
hierarchical tree. Therefore, at the beginning of chapter B you will find a sheet
describing the hierarchical tree step by step.
Throughout the manual the keys are printed in capitals, whereas each menu
word and/or line is visualized in bold characters.

CONTENTS OF THE PACKAGE

The package of the Aquila Vet consists of the following:
■ One Aquila Vet basic unit
■ One manual set
■ One bottle of coupling gel
■ One or more probes; depending on what was ordered.

THE AQUILA VET

Intended Use
The scanner and its range of probes are intended to perform diagnostic
ultrasound examinations in order to evaluate soft tissue. The indications for
use are probe dependent and are specified in section D.

Version: 58B11EN04-200607 A- 1
Introduction The Aquila Vet

Two technologies
It is generally accepted that different types of study may need different probe
technology. For this reason the Aquila Vet offers two technologies in one
system. Curved Array: often the probe of choice for abdominal scanning and
Linear Array; for high resolution small parts studies.

Linear Array
A Linear Array probe is made up of, typically 80 or more, small rectangular
crystal elements mounted side by side to form a single strip. By triggering the
elements sequentially in groups, a rectangular ultrasound image is built up of
which the width approximates the length of the array.
The ultrasound beam can be focused by using delay-lines to shape the wave
front transmitted by the crystal groups. Furthermore, by changing the beam
shape in sequential frames it is possible to work with multiple focal points.
The advantage of the Linear Array is its wide near field, which can be of
particular importance in Small Parts scanning.

Curved Array
Curved Array technology is the same as Linear Array in every respect, except
that the crystal elements are formed into a curve, rather than into a straight
line, which gives a diverging ultrasound image.
The advantages of the curved array are its wide far field, coupled to a small
"footprint", or narrow near field, which is often of advantage in abdominal
scanning.

The Operation of the Scanner Introduction

THE OPERATION OF THE SCANNER

The menu tree starts with the main menu. The main menu is displayed on the
left side of the screen, overlapping the ultrasound image. When one of the
items is activated, the menus overlap the main menu in a cascading way.
The menu tree is mostly limited to four levels.
In general, the Aquila Vet consists of a keyboard and a screen. Both will be
explained below:

The Keyboard
The keyboard of the Aquila Vet can be divided into four sections:

1. The trackball and the five surrounding keys.

2. The direct operating keys.
3. The alphanumeric keyboard.
4. The gain knobs.

The on and off key is located at the right top corner.

Introduction The Operation of the Scanner

1. The trackball and the five surrounding keys.

SELECT
Pressing the SELECT key, when only the ultrasound image is on the screen,
will display the main menu. By scrolling through this menu using the
trackball, any item can be highlighted and then activated by pressing the
SELECT key again. This will display a second menu from which any item can
be chosen by using the trackball as before.
Pressing SELECT again will result in one of the following:
■ another menu.
■ an action, for example the appearance of a measurement caliper cross.
■ programming of the selected item.

ESCAPE
With the ESCAPE key you can go back through the menus. Activating this key
will make the chosen menu disappear from the screen without activating an
item from that menu.
Pressing the ESCAPE key will, in a frozen image, erase measurements one at
a time.

AGAIN
The AGAIN key immediately reselects the menu item that was active before.
E.g., select OBSTETRICS from the main menu, then GSD, then DISTANCE 1.
Now you can perform the measurement and press AGAIN to jump
immediately to the menu where DISTANCE 2 can be selected.

SET
In some menus (gamma curve editor, formula editor) the SET key is used to
edit operations. When no menus are displayed, the SET key is used to activate
and control the caliper.

FREEZE
The FREEZE key freezes or unfreezes the image. Upon unfreezing the image
annotations are automatically cleared, unless programmed otherwise
(menu: program/text settings/). After freezing, the Cine Memory is
automatically activated, as indicated by the Cine Memory bar in the bottom
right of the frozen image. The leftmost number indicates the actual image on
display. The bar graph indicates its relative position in the Cine Memory. Use
the trackball to scroll forward or backward through the Cine Memory. Quickly
move the trackball either to left or right, to start auto replay. Touch the
trackball again to stop. The total number of images stored in Cine Memory
depends on several factors, such as: current display mode, frame-rate, image-
depth, number of transmit focal points and time elapsed since last unfreeze
command. Cine memory is available in all image modes; B, B+B, B-M and
M-mode, as well as for both image memories independently.

4. The gain knobs.

Time gain compensation

Time gain compensation in normal situations is defined so that the entire
ultrasound image has a uniform echo density. This normal situation is
achieved when the TOTAL GAIN knob, and the DEPTH GAIN knobs are in
their center position.
For certain applications this normal position may not be suitable. Adjust the
overall brightness level of the ultrasound image to a convenient level with the
total gain knob.
To correct the brightness level at a certain depth, adjust with the near or far
gain knob. The cross-over point depth between near and far gain can be
adjusted as described on page C-15, chapter “Instructions for use”,
“TGC Near-Far”.

The Operation of the Scanner Introduction

The Image
Optimal image resolution
The focus setting and the number of echolines per image influence the
resolution.

Focus
The focus of an ultrasound image is defined in three planes:
1. Axial resolution
The resolution in line with the ultrasound beam.
The axial resolution is determined by the frequency of the probe. The higher
the frequency the better the axial resolution. However, the maximum
penetration decreases.

2. Lateral resolution
The resolution perpendicular to the direction of the ultrasound beam, is
the lateral resolution and is defined by the focussing of the probe. More
transmit focal points increase the lateral resolution. However, the frame rate
mostly decreases. With ‘Total Image Focus’ activated, the Aquila Vet adjusts
receive focus in an optimal way. Good lateral focussing can be obtained over
full depth of view, with only one transmit focal point selected.

3. Transverse resolution
The resolution perpendicular to the plane of the ultrasound image, is
the transverse resolution and is also defined by the focussing of the probe. For
Linear and Curved Array probes the transversal focus is determined by means
of the acoustic lens and is optimized at one depth.
With Linear and Curved Array probes up to four focal points can be activated.
You can select a focal point and its position by pressing and or .

The position of the focal points are indicated in the depth scale as triangle
arrows.
The number and position of the focal points can be selected with the focus keys
in the focus section.
If you want to erase a focal point you must press the corresponding focus key.
However one focal point will always remain visible.

☞ NOTE: More focal points decreases the frame rate.

The monitor has to be adjusted in a dim (darkened) room.
To adjust brightness and contrast of the monitor, a grayscale is available. The
grayscale is displayed at the left hand top corner of the image field.
Beneath the monitor are the “pop out” Brightness and Contrast knobs. Turn
the BRIGHTNESS and CONTRAST knobs fully counterclockwise.
Turn the near-, far- and total gain knobs to the mid position.
Turn BRIGHTNESS clockwise until the darkest square of the grayscale can just
be distinguished from the black background.
Turn the CONTRAST until the two brightest squares can be distinguished
from each other.
Now the optimal adjustment of the monitor is established. The adjustment is
dependent on the ambient light. Readjustment is necessary when the ambient
light changes.
Always try to optimize the image with the gain controls of the scanner and
keep the adjustment of the monitor fixed.

Video manipulation
The scanner enables digital grayscale conversion.
Grayscale conversion can be useful in certain applications to enhance the
visibility of tissues.
The scanner has 8 preprogrammed and 2 user programmable gray maps. The
gray maps influence the video grayscale, just before the video is output to the
monitor.
It is possible to program two gray maps. How to program the gray maps is
described in the Application manual.

Image orientation
Linear and Curved Array probes
The green light on the probe indicates whether the probe is selected for use
(illumination). The green light also indicates the orientation of the scan plane.
In normal operation the green light corresponds to the left side of the image on
the monitor.

System Set Up System, User and Application settings

Preparing the examination environment

When the scanner is in position the castors should be locked.
The scanner is best used in a darkened room.
The scanner is connected to the mains supply as described on pages B-1 and
B-2. If the scanner fails to start up, the cable connections should be checked. If
a subsystem such as a video printer is not working, its power connection,
power switch and signal connecting lead should be checked.
A general reset of the system, which acts like a power-off/power-on sequence
is performed when the keys FUNCTION and then NEW PATIENT on the
keyboard are pressed subsequently.
Should you still have problems starting up the system, please contact your
local dealer.

SYSTEM, USER AND APPLICATION SETTINGS

Most configuration settings can be saved in non-volatile memory in the

scanner. After the mains power has been switched off, the settings will be
retained. At start-up, the scanner will be set according to the settings stored in
the non-volatile memory.

The Aquila Vet non-volatile settings are organized into three different levels.
These levels are:

1. System settings

2. User settings

3. Application settings

Programming “user settings” and “application settings” is not different from

normal use of the system. The only specific action required is to save the
settings before switching off the system. This concept is also referred to as
“programming by example”.

System settings
System settings comprise all configurable items in the scanner, including user
and application settings. System settings can be saved to, and loaded from
memory card. Loading system settings from memory card will overwrite all
user and application settings in the system.

☞ NOTE: System settings are software version dependent, and are not
guaranteed to be portable between software versions.

User settings
A total of five users can be distinguished by the Aquila Vet. Upon initial
configuration the Aquila Vet contains one user, named “Manufacturer”. Up to
four additional users can be programmed into the scanner, for a total of five
independent users. The initial user “Manufacturer” can be deleted and
replaced by any other user name. Users are identified by a 19 character
alfanumeric string. Each user stores an independent set of user settings.
Switching between users is instantaneously, and does not require a full reboot
of the system.
Upon initial creation of a new user, this user is automatically saved to the non-
volatile memory.
The initial new user’s configuration will be a copy of the current active user at
the time the new user was created.

General Information Accessory Information

Endorectal Use (6.0/8.0 MHz LA DF Vet probe)

The 6.0/8.0 MHz Linear Array DF Vet probe is a special designed Veterinary
probe and can be used endorectally with or without a hose (sterile or non
sterile) for the probe.

☞ NOTE: Despite that short contact with coupling gel and body fluids cause in
no way decrease in flexibility of the cable. The manufacturer, strongly
recommends to use a condom which covers the veterinary probe and cable
during examination.
Clean the rectum off all faeces. Cover your arm with a hose. Place the
veterinary probe with enough gel in your hand and enter the rectum. Be sure
that the crystal side of the probe is facing downwards when you enter the
rectum. Place the crystal side of the veterinary probe against the rectumwall in
order to get a good image. The scanplane is longitudinal. Rotating your arm to
the left or the right results in changing the scanview more to the left or to the
right.

☞ NOTE: The manufacturer strongly recommends for the 6.0/8.0 MHz Linear
Array DF VET probe to clean the veterinary probe and cable to the remote
control in cold water right after every examination.
The image on the screen can be frozen or memorized by pressing the
corresponding key on the remote control or the keyboard. Also the depth of
the image can be changed by pressing the DEPTH key on the remote control
or the keyboard.
The frequency of the veterinary probe can be changed from 6.0 MHz to
8.0 MHz and vice versa by pressing the PROBE key on the keyboard.

Abdominal Use
The linear and curved array probes can be used for abdominal examinations
with small animals like for instance sheep, dogs and cats. If necessary the
abdominal wall of the animal must be shaved in order to obtain good contact
between the veterinary probe and the skin. When the hair is removed rinse the
shaven part of the abdominal wall with water and apply enough gel on the
abdominal wall and the crystalside of the probe to get a good contact.
Depending on the organ or structure to be visualized you can use a probe with
a frequency of 3.5 MHz, 5.0 MHz, 6.0 MHz, 7.5 MHz or 8.0 MHz.
Sheep and dogs can be examined standing up or lying on their side or back.
Cats and small dogs have to be examined lying on their back.
The 3.5 MHz LA AS probe is special designed for backfat applications in cattle,
swine and sheep.

☞ NOTE: A sign will appear in the image when this probe is activated
indicating to use this probe on animals only! (See also beginning of this
manual).

D - 10 Version: 58B11EN04-200607
Accessory Information General Information

Cardiac
Use the 5.0/7.5 MHz R17 Curved Array probe, whenever structures of the
heart are to be visualized. The probe ought to be positioned parasternal or
apical, depending upon the structures to be visualized and the measurements
to be made. Make sure sufficient coupling gel is used. Adjust the gain control
levers to obtain a good clinical image (See also the chapter “Cardiology” of the
Application manual).

Intraoperative
For structures in the range of 0 - 6 cm a 8.0 MHz or 6.0/8.0 MHz Linear Array
probe may be used.
When using this technique the probe has to be covered with a sterile hose.
Position the probe over the organ of interest. Adjust the gain control to obtain
a good clinical image.

Preparing the intraoperative probe:

Use a sterile hose with a length of 1.5 meters, which is open on both sides. Put
sterile coupling gel in one end of the hose and enter the probe from the other
side. Fold the hose lightly as around the element side backwards and secure
with a sterile wrap. Make sure the gel is between elements and plastic hose.
The other end is secured with a strap.

Handling, Care, and Storage

General probe cleaning
Cleaning the probe is done by first removing the ultrasound coupling gel with
a soft tissue and then gently wipe the probe dry using a new tissue or dry
cloth.
When more cleaning is required only a mild detergent or hand-soap may be
used together with some water and a soft tissue cloth.
Maintenance linear and curved array probes:
No special maintenance is needed for correct functioning of the Linear and
Curved Array probes.
Inspect the probe carefully after a fall. A dangerous situation may arise due to
damaged insulation of probe cable and probe lens.

☞ NOTE: The temperature of cleaning material may not exceed the

temperature range of 5 - 34 °C.

Version: 58B11EN04-200607 D - 11
General Information Accessory Information

Maintenance of the intraoperative probes:

■ After each exam, regard the probe hose and any other wastes as
potentially infectious and dispose immediately.
■ Wipe the probe clean with a towel.
■ Scrub the probe with water and a mild detergent. Use a soft cloth or
towel. Never use an abrasive sponge.
■ Disinfect the probe using Cidex™ Activated Dialdehyde Solution
according to the manufacturer's directions.
After it has been cleaned and disinfected, the probes can be stored, either in the
probe holder on the scanner, or in their original case.

☞ NOTE: Always follow these basic precautions for cleaning and high level
disinfecting:

■ DO NOT soak the probe in alcohol. Alcohol is nearly inactive against

certain organisms.
■ DO NOT rub the probe with an abrasive sponge when washing with
soap and water. Use a soft cloth or towel.

Others
For a proper use of the probes the following additional items are necessary:
■ Protective probe covers (for invasive probes).
