Due: Wednesday, September 25, at 11:30 AM

CHEM 260 (Lecture 1) September 18, 2019 1/6

Problem 1

Compare energies, wavelengths and frequencies of infrared, visible, and

ultraviolet photons to the energies, wavelengths and frequencies of X-rays
and γ-rays.

CHEM 260 (Lecture 1) September 18, 2019 2/6

Problem 2

In a photoelectric effect what is the change in the number and kinetic

energy of ejected electrons if

intensity of light increases by a factor of two,

frequency of light increases by a factor of two.

Assume ultra violet photons of λ = 300 nm wavelength and gold foil with
the work function of 5.1 eV.

CHEM 260 (Lecture 1) September 18, 2019 3/6

Problem 3

Why does the transmission electron microscope resolve smaller objects

than an optical microscope? How do you control the resolution and what
are the smallest size objects which can be resolved?

CHEM 260 (Lecture 1) September 18, 2019 4/6

Problem 4

Show that wave function

ψ(x, t) = Ae i(kx−ωt) (1)

is an eigen function of the quantum mechanical energy operator.

Determine the eigen value for this eigen function. Then show the same for
the

ψ(x, t) = Ae −i(kx+ωt) (2)

wave function and compare the eigen values.

CHEM 260 (Lecture 1) September 18, 2019 5/6

Problem 5

Show that wave function

ψ(x, t) = Ae i(kx−ωt) (3)

is an eigen function of the quantum mechanical one dimensional

momentum operator. Determine the eigen value for this eigen function.
Then show the same for the

ψ(x, t) = Ae −i(kx+ωt) (4)

wave function and compare the eigen values.
