this week taught us about the difference between internal and external recruitment and how different companies use different hiring techniques. This week taught me that I need to pay attention to a company’s hiring techniques in order to maximise my chance of getting hire. Week1 also taught me about how advanced our world is starting to get. Hence, it is important that we all are able to adapt and grow with the moving technology.
Professional bodies and ethics
This week was very challenging in terms of trying to understand what a professional body really was and the significance of it. This week I learnt how to really identify what is ethical and what is not in the workplace. I terms of my career profession; this week has taught me about my chosen professions (Property) professional body and how I can eventually become a member. In addition, this week I learnt about the five fundamental principles and have made sure to always use them in the workplace and in my everyday life. Week 2 has also taught me about how to buy ethical products and what to look for when doing that.
Communication and workplace (part 1)
I have learnt many communication skills in this week’s topic that will help me confidently get my points across when I communicate. I learnt about how to use the right tone, facial expressions and formal letters. Etc. I. believe that this will help me attend interviews in the future. In addition, I have also learnt about how important it is to keep a great social presence and to think before you post anything as it could be viewed by potential employers.
Communication and workplace (part 2)
Week 4 has taught me about types of communication such as face-to-face and on the phone. This is because sometimes the things you can say with your facial expressions can’t be said over the phone because people may misunderstand it. In addition, I have learnt the steps it will take to write a professional memo. The lecture pods have taught me the writing process. After learning about the writing process, I am more confident that my writing won’t have as much mistakes in it anymore as there are 3 steps that need to be followed before publishing any piece of writing (planning, drafting, revising).
Employability skills and culture diversity (Part 1)
Week 5 has really taught me about the importance of first impressions; online and in person. This was really important for me because it now allows me to really think before I speak, especially when I have never met the person. In addition, I have learnt that women are becoming more likely to be employed and the discrimination against women is changing. Hence, because I am a woman, I was very happy to hear this news as it gave me more confidence to apply for jobs. Reading 5 in week 5 learning has taught me that recruiters are starting to use blind recruitments to hire. This is when they receive blind CVs. So that more people get a chance to reach the interview stage when applying for jobs. Blind recruitment eliminates the unconscious bias that may be in the recruitment process.
Employability skills and culture diversity (Part 2)
The continuation of employability skills and culture diversity was an extremely helpful topic. I learned about the importance of power words. Power words grab the attention of the reader in a phycological sense so that they remember you. Before this week’s learning, I did not think. That resumes needed so much character, however, week 5 really made me start to look at resumes different. In addition, I have also learnt about the different types of resumes and how to choose the right one for the job you are applying for. Furthermore, I have also learnt about the significance of diversity and how much success can come from a diverse environment.
Employability skills and culture diversity (Part 3)
Week 7 was very informative for me. One the important things I learnt this week is to address the recruiter in cover letters even if it means going out of your way to email/call the company to attain that information. This is because it personalises your cover letter and lets you stand out. In terms of cover letter, I have always been taught to start it with ‘to whom this may concern’ so to find out that was not correct was really surprising. Furthermore, I have learnt how to answer the challenging interview question asking about your weakness. I have learnt that recruiters know that no one is perfect, and people do have flaws so it’s okay to state your weaknesses however it is important to have a plan to fix them rather than just accepting you have a weakness. Technology and professional practice Week 7 has focused on online forums and how companies can use them to achieve their goals. I have learnt that blogs are used to get the opinions of their employees on certain topics. In difference, I learnt about Wikis and how it is like a shared document that everyone can edit and add their opinions. I believe that these forums are extremely important in terms of making employees feel like they are contributing to the success of the company. Online forums also give employees the confidence to state their opinions. The lecture videos also explained the difference between industrial age, information age and social age. I really did learn a lot from this because they are so different from one another. It is extremely important to be able to recognise the different types of ages and which you identify the most before choosing to for certain companies.
