4. What were the “March laws” of 1848 in Hungary

March laws were also called the April laws. The measures published by the Hungarian Diet at
Pozsony, during the Revolution of 1848, created a modern national Magyar state. After
revolutions started in Paris and Vienna, the liberal Hungarians, who dominated the lower house of the
Diet, tried to avoid radical social revolution by emphasizing reform and national liberation.

5. Why did the revolutions fail in the Austrian empire?

The Revolutions began to fail since June because the middle class was underdeveloped due to the non-
industrialized country, even though the revolution was led by students and intellectuals, they were not
as supported as the bourgeoisie in Western Europe were. A constitution was issued in April providing for
an elected legislature, but the revolutionaries rejected this constitution in promised to be more
democratic. The revolutions began to take on more nationalist aspects and the Austrians began to use
more drastic measures to control the revolutions.
