What exactly is the meaning of identity? There is a deeper meaning behind it.

Identity is who you are, how you think or see yourself, how you are viewed by the
world, and the characteristics that define you. In the two texts “Old Man” by
Ricardo Sanchez and ”Cloudy day” by Jimmy Santiago Baca both authors use
word choices such as imagery, descriptive details, and tone to explore the idea of
identity.

In the first text “Old Man” by Ricardo Sanchez the old man is the author's
grandfather. In the poem he appreciates the stories, history, and memories of his
grandfather Talking about his past is encouraging his readers to always stay true to
themselves and know where they came from. In the text the old man is very
confident and the author goes into detail of the conversations that him and his
grandfather had about their heritage. In the third stanza the author states “ you are
indio among other things”.This means “indegenous people of The United States or
of Eastern Asia”. This quote shows the old man is know where he comes from and
his heritage.

The author goes into detail about his grandfather and uses very descriptive details
about where he came from. In the second stanza it states “old man, loved and
respected, he would speak sometimes of pueblos, san juan, santa clara, and even
santo domingo, and his family, he would say, came from there”. The author is
telling us what his grandfather told him about where he came from and going
deeper into his heritage. In the last stanza of the poem the author states “gone into
dust is your body with its stoic look and resolution, but your reality, old man, lives
on in a mindsoul touched by you.”The author explains that even though his
grandfather is not physically here anymore his legacy lives on. In this poem the
author uses very descriptive details and word choice that allow the audience to
deeper understand his grandfather and his heritage and culture.

In the second text “Cloudy Day” by Jimmy Santiago Baca the author is telling a
story of a man in prison who wants people to know that life is whatever you make
it . This means that however you choose to live your life becomes a reflection of
you. The author goes into details on his experience in prison and what he faced and
endured while serving his time. The author encourages his audience that they

should always love themselves. One of the author's main points he is trying to get
across is that people shouldn’t let the situation they are in affect their character as
a person, but use those situations to make them stronger.

The author gives a very detailed description in “Cloudy Days” by using figurative
language, descriptive details, and imagery. In the sixth stanza the author uses
imagery by stating “My eyelids flick a little bit, while I stare in disbelief”. This
quote shows the author's feelings of shock and sadness. The author also uses
figurative language by stating how “ the wind plays like the wind”. This compares
the sound of the flute to the wind which is a simile. The author uses this to convey
his message on how he is feeling so the audience can visualize how he sees and
feels.

In conclusion, the two texts “Old Man” by Ricardo Sanchez and “Cloudy Day” by
Jimmy Santiago Baca both have similar messages that they wanted to get across.
Both texts deal with identity and recognizing things such as who you are and where
you come from. Both authors use figurative language, descriptive details, and
imagery to allow the readers to deeper understand their themes. In both texts there
are two different topics but both use identity to make a strong point. They wanted
the readers to take away always wanting to stay true to yourself and value
everything in life from experiences, people, and culture. Never forgetting where
you come from and never feeling bad about the situation you're in but use it to
better yourself.
