Sects for Sted Ele AMB 3073 Foreword ‘The success of the first volume of “Easy Fingerstyle” confirmed my experience that there is considerable demand for simple, melodious solo guitar pieces in the finger style scene. Players are looking for shorter pieces with song character. This seemed a good reason for me to write a sequel. ‘The resulting 14 new pieces range from easy to quite advanced, whereby I decided to set the overall degree of difficulty slightly higher than in the first volume. I felt that it made sense to present players who had already worked their way through the previous pieces with a bit of a challenge. One of the compositions from the first volume, "Percussive Groove", has in the meantime doveloped into a fully-fledged concert piece, which I have incorporated into my live programme, The new parts are not particularly simple, but I believe that those players who have leamed it from the previous volume will find the develop- ment to concert level especially interesting. ‘This time I have added short explanations pertaining to the character of the pieces, their form and harmonic structure or to specific playing techniques involved. During the recordings I once again placed particular value on “listenability” and believe that this has resulted in @ CD which is worth hearing and enjoying just for its own sake. | recommend all students to start practising these pieces at a considerably slower tempo than on the CD. They still sound good when played like that. However, if you manage to reach the tempo of the recordings, you have titles in your repertoire ‘which are certainly worth performing. T hope you all enjoy listening, practising and playing! Ulli Bégershausen (Translation: Steve Baker) Notes on the Pieces* The first piece Ouvertiire (Ouverture} (*) is a little unusual, as the melody is played in the bass. The accompaniment is a staccato figure on the treble strings. During the refrain, however, which is in A-minor, the melody switches to the upper strings. The piece is in the A-mixolydian mode, giving a key signature with two sharps. It modu- lates to A-minor in bars 20-28, Fiir Claudia (Dedicated to Claudia) (*) picks up where the dreamy, melodic pieces in Easy Fingerstyle, Volume 1 left off and has a similarly catchy character. In order to work properly, this needs to be played with a good sense of dynamics. “The stars from (to (**™) denote the degree of dificuity of the piece in question and are intended to aid orientation, Titles marked with (*} are easiest, whereas those marked |"**) are the most dificult. (© 207 by Acoute Mic GmbH & Co. KG, Cenabck AL 3073 Im Zentrum des Geschehens (At the Centre of Events) (**) is the first title in this compilation which is characterized by 16th note figures. To grasp this thythmical structure and count the lengths of the notes correctly, try speaking the syllables ‘Ta-Ke-Ti-Na on each quarter beat. Thanks to the frequent use of hammer-ons, this number is easier to play than it first seems. In the fifth position I often make use of open strings in order to fill out the sound Muffle (°°) gets its typical sound from damping the strings. The edge of the right hand is laid lightly on the strings next to the bridge. It is helpful to use a thumb pick when playing in this way, as it permits the thumb to be held parallel to the strings. Of course it is possible to play this number without damping, but the specific groove found here is croated by this technique. Memories (*} is harmonically and rhythmically fairly simple and therefore makes a good starting point. Pure (* is the only piece which I have noted in three part voicings. As this com- position lives from dynamics and sound, this seemed to make good sense. Here it is. very important to bring out the melody, while playing the accompanying notes in the middie part more softly. The first bass note in each bar almost always sounds through. to the end. Bluesrock (*) is a groove-oriented number. Tb give it the right sound, it's impor~ tant to damp the bass notes in order to lend the whole thing a percussive touch. Major-Minor (**] The appeal of this piece lies in the fact that it changes from G-major to the parallel minor key E~minor, The two keys alternate as the tonic and make it difficult for the listener to be certain whether the tune is in a major or a minor key, Eventually (**) is one of the more technically demanding pieces in this collection. It requires not only playing in various different positions, but also an alternating fin- gerpicking in sixteenth notes. Waltz (****} is a waltz in 3/4 time which is not easy to play. The melody lines in particular are technically pretty difficult. With compositions in D, such as Deliberate (*}, tuning the guitar to dropped D is often the best solution, as this gives you the low D in the bass. Push It (*) This piece consists largely of arpeggios, so that the numerous sixteenth notes come rippling out. However, the plucking position is not maintained constantly. From time to time, sixteenth notes have to be played with an alternating fingerpick- ing. Switching between arpeggios and runs (also in the bass} helps make the piece interesting. ‘Sunny and Warm (*| The dropped D tuning is also useful when playing in G. In this case the D is the fifth in the tonic. The chord based on this note is called the dominant. It often sounds good when the lowest note on the guitar is the root note of the dominant chord. ‘The percussive slap in Abspann (When the Credits Roll) ("* is created by briefly forming the the right hand to a relaxed fist and allowing it to fall lightly onto the strings. Ihave already introduced readers to Percussive Groove (****) in Easy Fingerstyle, Volume I. [liked it so much that [ expanded it into a concert piece, which I perform on stage. This example is a good demonstration of how a grooving melody can be aug- mented by additional variations and runs which extend over the entire fingerboard until it developes into a complete piece in its own right.
